Why can AI generate Super Mario but not a wedge ramp for my robot vacuum?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49405520I've been puzzled by something: AI generation can produce an elaborate figurine, a cartoon character, even a convincing Super Mario — yet it can't reliably make a simple wedge ramp so my robot vacuum can climb a step. For context: I bought a Bambu P2S but can't model. I tried the "describe it and get a model" AIs — the output is unusable, you can't adjust it, it's never quite what I meant. I tried having an agent write Python to build geometry directly — it tops out at simple primitives. What finally worked: geometric decomposition. I break a complex part into ordered, grouped steps, describe each as a small spec, and let an agent execute them in Blender (via blender-mcp). That process turned out to abstract into a small engine — the key insight being it converts the 3D spatial reasoning LLMs are bad at, into the structured code they're good at. I wrote it up here: https://github.com/zhuchaokn/spec-3d-model My questions: - Why is "functional part" generation so much weaker than "figuri

Its geometric patterns are hypnotic and gorgeous. I also love generative music composition. So bringing those two things together in a browser tab, I'm hooked. Musical Spirograph is a relatively simple concept. A set of points dash around the screen according to […]

Show HN: Artifex - Graph Based GPU Harness for AI Agentshttps://gatewai.studio/artifexArtifex is a machine-first, headless CLI runtime built for autonomous coding agents to author, validate, and render media node graphs locally. The agent talks to Artifex through a structured CLI interface. Workflows are DAGs, and each node is a plugin that can implement its own execution logic..Each node has capability to inject logic into graph processing, WebGPU rendering, audio processing and their own SKILL.md file. Nodes can also inject their react components (not available with CLI) - which will be available with the desktop app.Execution is topological and supports checkpoint caching via state flags (--state and --from-state), allowing agents to adjust layout coordinates or downstream filters without recomputing expensive and long upstream generation calls (such as Video Generation using Fal AI or an Agent Node using OpenRouter).Multi-track visual composition timeline with animations, blending, media cut, crop, color LUTs, filter graphs, audio effects and other media editing nod

Show HN: An open-source video editor built for coding agentshttps://github.com/diffusionstudio/editorHey HN! We’ve been working on this project for almost 3 years now, and recently decided to finally make it open source. It’s a local-first video editor that runs in the browser and is mostly built from scratch. We’re using WebCodecs for all the encoding and decoding work, which lets us get performance pretty close to native editors.Since day one the goal of the project was to solve LLM-based video editing, but the models have only recently become capable enough to make it genuinely useful. Instead of trying to force our own chat interface onto users, we built a CLI that is designed to work with existing coding agents like Claude Code. The idea is that agents can operate the editor directly, while you can still open the same project in a visual interface to review their work and change things yourself.A few things that set it apart from other NLEs: - The editor is an infinite canvas (kind of like Figma, but for video editing) - You can build compositions as SolidJS modules and mount them

Actively Steerable Femtosat Constellations for In-situ Exploration of Saturn’s Rings, Atmosphere, and Magnetospherehttps://www.nasa.gov/directorates/stmd/niac/actively-steerable-femtosat-constellations-for-in-situ-exploration-of-saturns-rings-atmosphere-and-magnetosphere/Michael RubensteinNorthwestern University, Chicago We propose a mission to use ~10,000 actively steerable femtosats to map the ring composition, atmospheric composition and density, and the magnetic field distribution of Saturn. Conducting in-situ surveys of Saturn’s rings with a single flagship mission, such as Cassini, would carry an unacceptably high risk of mission failure due to […]

Show HN: SubjectiveZero, an open-source agentic node editor for creative codinghttps://sxp.studio/apps/subzHey there,My name is Clem, I've been a solo indie dev for a couple years now, exploring frontier tech like XR and agentic workflows in the context of creative / interactive work.I've been building creation tools for a while and some common design challenge is to figure out the right level of abstraction for your tool. You can always make it super advanced and complex with low level concepts (shader composition, actual code etc.) but then you get something with a high complexity / learning curve. On the other hand, if you make your tool too high level, it might be easier to use at first, but people will most likely hit a wall eventually and start fighting with your tool to get their edge case done (you see that on mobile a lot actually). With this prototype (called SubjectiveZero), I'd like to imagine that we can kind of move the "slider" on the abstraction layer, meaning that you can actually start with prompts that describe the goal, and you can go as high level (stay with abstract pro

BendersLib: A Benders Decomposition Library in Pythonhttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=47870502BendersLib (https://benders.dev) is a Python library that supports a range of Benders decomposition variants, including Classical Benders Decomposition, Combinatorial Benders Decomposition, L-shaped Method, Integer L-shaped Method, Generalized Benders Decomposition, and Logic-based Benders Decomposition. While BendersLib provides built-in implementations of these methods, it is designed to be extensible. Users can implement custom Benders decomposition methods by customizing subproblem solvers and cut generators, and defining callback functions for enhancement strategies. BendersLib is solver agnostic and has built-in interfaces for popular Mathematical Programming and Constraint Programming solvers. Its support for rapid prototyping and high extensibility are designed to meet the needs of both researchers and practitioners in Operations Research and related fields.

Show HN: OpenSymbolicAI – Agents with typed variables, not just context stuffinghttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=46876687Hi HN,We've spent the last year building AI agents and kept hitting the same wall: prompt engineering doesn't feel like software engineering. It feels like guessing. We built OpenSymbolicAI to turn agent development into actual programming. It is an open-source framework (MIT) that lets you build agents using typed primitives, explicit decompositions, and unit tests.THE MAIN PROBLEM: CONTEXT WINDOW ABUSEMost agent frameworks (like ReAct) force you to dump tool outputs back into the LLM's context window to decide the next step.Agent searches DB.Agent gets back 50kb of JSON.You paste that 50kb back into the prompt just to ask "What do I do next?"This is slow, expensive, and confuses the model.THE SOLUTION: DATA AS VARIABLESIn OpenSymbolicAI, the LLM generates a plan (code) that manipulates variables. The actual heavy data (search results, PDF contents, API payloads) is stored in the Python/runtime variables and is never passed through the LLM context until a specific primitive actually ne

Icy cycles may have driven early protocell evolutionhttps://www.spacedaily.com/reports/Icy_cycles_may_have_driven_early_protocell_evolution_999.htmlTokyo, Japan (SPX) Jan 26, 2026 Modern cells rely on intricate molecular machinery and genetic programs to grow and divide, but the earliest protocells were likely simple lipid-bound compartments whose behavior depended mainly on their physical and chemical properties. A new experimental study suggests that subtle differences in membrane composition could have helped these primitive compartments grow, fuse, and hold on to gene
