Ask HN: Have you used LLMs to reinvigorate you niche programming community?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49259794I've seen a few discussions over the years about how niche languages like Lisp, Forth, Prolog, etc. would be great to use, but even for personal projects the lack of available packages makes them hard to use. However, with an LLM you can have it replicate whatever package you'd like from a more popular language. You can even port software to your favorite niche architecture. If you really want to run your homelab off a PA-RISC machine you just give an agent SSH access and tell it to make the software work. For myself, I have only done very little of this. I did add POWER vectorization to POV-Ray so that I can get a little more speed out of a machine that has more power than it needs for other things. Instead of letting it use something like Python or Go for small scripts I'll tell the LLM that the more logical choice is Prolog. But mostly I have been using mainstream languages because the code is being generated and, therefore, I'm not playing with it, so I'm interested in hearing if otAug 11, 2026 3:23 PM

My name is Jai.I own one of the largest driving schools in the Bay Area (and California!), and while trying to hire offshore staff, I discovered just how hard it is.IT'S (surprisingly) WAY TOO HARD!!My best friend Alex and I realized that throughout our careers in F500 companies, startups of every stage, and small businesses that we ran into this problem many times over. You pretty much have 3 choices:1) you go to an agency and pay upwards of $3k+ a month for a resource that should cost closer to $1k/mo. 2) you go to a legacy marketplace like Upwork/Fiverr and screen all the resumes yourself, interview each candidate, figure out payments, and then negotiate/contract with each candidate. 3) you buy a bunch of software like LinkedIn recruiter (or AI slop recruiting tools) and Deel/Rippling for payroll, and you build the entire hiring process/infrastructure yourselfAll 3 of these options straight up suck.We realized that if we were to reimagine how a marketplace functions usinAug 7, 2026 4:28 PM

Ask HN: Anyone else tired of brands discontinuing your favorite everyday items?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49095601Hi everyone, 1 I've run into the same problem over and over again. When an item wears out, I can't buy the exact same one anymore. It's been discontinued. Or it has been changed while keeping only the same name.2 I assume this isn't only my problem. I've heard many stories about people not being able to buy the same shoes, T-shirt, perfume, or jacket again.3 I understand why manufacturers do this. I have no questions for them. What matters more to me here is us — customers, or simply people. And I started wondering: what could be done to support a customer's choice for years?4 This is where I want to bring concepts from software and hardware engineering into the clothing industry — LTS and APIs. What if we freeze the standard and support it? We already have things like SATA or CPU sockets. Why not build a similar concept for clothing? Then the API at the point of contact with the customer is divided into a physically immutable part (color, material, design) and a flexible part (logistiJul 29, 2026 10:30 AM

Show HN: Hale – A Concurrent Systems Languagehttps://hale-lang.org/I'd like to share Hale, a concurrent systems language that I've been working on this year. The general thesis is that good software design is an actual thing. In everything I've ever programmed or designed, in any part of the stack, I've always felt like the design "to be implemented" is always the same, but given the actual intersect of language, libraries and domain, the way the implementation looks and comes together feels different. We know that software designs are good or bad, and we talk amongst ourselves about design patterns and whatnot, when we try to actually describe what the good design is. Generally speaking, it's not uncommon for large codebases to define some baseline process harness that codifies a few technical opinions for the rest of the project. Choices here shape what the "good design" must be for the rest of the program, given the harness/framework's foundation. Since the clankers started doing uppers at the end of last year, I feel like most of my time with agentJul 21, 2026 2:45 PM

Ask HN: Optimal Journaling Book Choice?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=48669910The journaling bug has bit! ^_^I like the idea of standardising my book choice for the long run, and Moleskine is easily available in my part of the world.I currently have 3 different journals on my desk as I type this. One is an A4 hard cover. The next one is a slightly smaller soft cover. And the last one is an A5 hard cover.I'm exploring with all 3 because the long-term collector in me wants to settle on 1, and then stick to it for multiple journals to come.I'm curious which journal size and cover type the passionate journalers in here have opted for and why. Thanks ^_^Jun 25, 2026 6:58 AM
