Show HN: Sign language translation with smart glassesHi!I have relatives that speak sign language, and always found it odd that despite unbelievable advances in AI in recent years, the problem still felt somewhat neglected.Especially with the advent of wearable tech; to my knowledge, this is the first project that integrates the meta glasses w/ fingerspelling translation software.As for the technical aspect, I trained a neural net on Google's FSboard dataset modeling a CNN + GRU temporal encoder architecture (trained with CTC), and then decoded the output with CTC beam search and a KenLM language model to solve some of the deficiencies with my model.I've also made it cross-platform (web + iOS, with both web screen sharing and the ability to use non smart-glasses). The project is entirely FOSS.I'm currently working on making the on-device model work cleanly, but unfortunately performance takes a bit of hit on lower-end devices so for now I've opted for hosting the model on Modal.There's so much room for improvement, but I'm happy with thi

At this point the collection is large enough that several of the friends and family members I've shared my Plex server with have cancelled their streaming service subscriptions.After getting laid off a while back, I started working on a degree online. It seemed like a good opportunity to spend some time traveling too, so I signed up for Starlink and got a friend to host my Plex server in his basement for the duration. Surely that would be good enough to watch whatever from where-ever.Turns out that no, it's not. Plex really doesn't like streaming over Starlink. It would top out at 8-9mbps in good conditions, often dropping down to 2 or 3, while other streams and downloads would happily hum along at 100mbps+.I spent a little time looking into the issue early on. You can check out my other blog posts if you want to get a sense of what that means: .Hack Club noticed these projects and thought I would be well suited to run an event. This was my reaction, I wanted to make something that could encourage the same competition as well the feedback I get from places like HN and appreciate well made projects. Hack Club does a good job at throwing money at people who make projects, but a iffy job at rewarding hard work. I wanted to change that. Radish Jam was my reaction to that, and this blog post goes through my thought processes in logistics. How something similar could be run again either by another Hack Clubber or an adult looking to run something for similar for adults :)

In my experience, it is quite literally the most capable tool available for offline password cracking across a wide range of use cases.I have spent the last 4 years (from age 14 to 18) extensively working with Hashcat and the tools surrounding it, and I have documented what I have learned throughout that time (since January 18, 2022) in my first book. During that period, I also had to continuously update and rewrite major sections as the field evolved.
