Show HN: CityEdit – Open-source map for voting on NYC street changesCityEdit (cityedit.org, https://github.com/edbltn/city-edit) is a map where anyone can propose street changes, e.g. safer crossings, new bike lanes, improved tree beds. Neighbors can then vote on those proposals. We just soft launched the app by hanging posters with QR codes at NYC's statistically most dangerous intersections (from open crash data at https://data.cityofnewyork.us/Public-Safety/Motor-Vehicle-Co...). Read more at https://sphericalharmonics.substack.com/p/city-edit-first-ed...(A poster turns out to be a great distribution channel - it reaches exactly the people who use that street, when they are using it!)The ultimate lofty vision is to build a sensorimotor loop that can awaken a city's collective consciousness: the community perceives its desires, proposes, votes, acts. Two disclaimers: 1. Ask HN: Should organizations be allowed to have all types of personl data(X.com)X will have a basically complete picture of its users, tying financial numbers and everyone the person makes payments to, to their weekly schedule to interests and desires, to the ability to imitate their manners of writing and often their images.Should any society ever allow any institution to have all these types of data at once? You're basically negating largely the ability to protest and oppose politicians, since government in US can control X, which means negating the idea of democracy to a significant degree, which depends on education, private thought, speech and assembly, and the lack of everything these China-style apps want to collect and compile.(I know Apple does this but Apple users generally are demonstrably sheep, and Apple's all-data-collection, like X, can be the subject of my question also.)

Show HN: Synapse – structurally honest reasoning VM (spec) – the missing layerstory:i wanted to make use of the enormous corpus of docs, pdfs, epubs in my possessionand reason on top of them, reliably.so i started to look into RAGs, taming LLMs for my needs and desires;but they don't seem reliable and chat interfaces were not made for such tasks.so i wanted to build a version which runs on my own local device, reliable, potent, private and fast.as i was planning / architecting / experimenting,i realized that the agentic libraries are not very transparent or modular to bend to my needs.so i deconstructed to what they are fundamentally, finite state machines (first principles thinking)a reliable, battle tested computer science phenomena.so i started to think how can we leverage FSM in a more mature, modular and reliable fashion.i started to read papers, arXiv, etc.eventually, i came up with synapse.and i can't do it all myselfso here we are.Apache 2.0 license.please crucify and resurrect my ideasso that i can eventually reason on my corpus and build myself at a velo
