Show HN: Skim – a minimalist open-source email client for Windows (MIT)https://skim-tech.com/I built Skim because I was super dissatisfied with all existing Windows clients.I mean, it's not a rocket science, there should be some lightweight modern solution, isn't it? So I decided to create a client that just, you know, MAKES SENSE and has design younger than dinosaurs.Key points:* Obsessed with installer size: it should be under 5Mb.* BYOK AI. Cowriter, agentic search, summarization and other AI stuff is powered by your own key for Anthropic/Openrouter, or you can connect your own OpenAI-compatible server (including local)* No bloat. It should be as contextual as possible: gives you right button when you need it. No menu at all. No integrations. Just email.* Instant startup, super modest on resources* Cool warm zine design with paper colors and really calming vibesIt's MIT - contribution and stars are welcome!

Show HN: Slate, a to-do list shaped like your week, not an endless backloghttps://slate-todo.comSlate is a task planner that sits between a calendar and a to-do list. Tasks go on the day you actually plan to do them, no fake time blocks required, and anything not ready for a specific day yet sits in a separate backlog instead of cluttering the week.Easy to try: no sign-up wall to poke around (though more advanced AI features would not be accessible)I made this because I never trusted either extreme. A calendar makes you fake commit to a time slot... A to-do list takes anything with no judgment about what belongs this week, so it just grows forever. Some of the harder parts to get right:1- Sync + drag&drop: Drag and drop needed to feel instant, but everything also syncs live across devices through AppSync/DynamoDB with optimistic concurrency: Getting those two to not fight each other (a drag mid-flight racing a subscription echoing your own write back at you) took a few rewrites... crazy how those simple things can be so hard to get right.2- UI: keeping the UI minimalist and nice o

Ask HN: Any good replacements for "Refined Hacker News?"https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=48845676Yesterday my browser updated and turned off "Refined Hacker News." It was a very minimalist plugin that made some minor UI changes to Hacker News that I miss. (It turned the upper-right username into a drop-down, and allowed in-line replies to comments.)Are there any replacements for that plugin? I tried a different plugin that has similar features (won't name), but it makes too many cosmetic changes, and, IMO, leaves Hacker News looking too ugly.

Show HN: GratefulMe – A privacy-focused gratitude journal apphttps://apps.apple.com/us/app/gratitude-journal-gratefulme/id6742772020I built a gratitude journaling app that implements CBT techniques to help users develop a daily mindfulness practice. Research shows that consistent gratitude practice can significantly improve mental wellbeing, and I wanted to create a tool that makes this accessible. The app focuses on these core principles:- Privacy: All data stays on your device with an offline-first approach - Simplicity: Clean interface optimized for quick daily entries - Consistency: Streak tracking and gentle notifications to build a habit - Organization: Category system to identify patterns in what brings you joyTech details:- Built with React Native/Expo - Local SQLite database using expo-sqlite and drizzle-orm - In-app purchases via RevenueCat - Minimalist architecture with a focus on performanceAs a developer, the most valuable lessons came from handling the entire process solo - from initial concept through development to App Store submission and payment infrastructure. The current roadmap includes customiza

Show HN: Quick Calories – Efficient Weight Loss for Software Engineershttps://calories.joeldare.comI faced a sudden career twist recently and I used it as motivation to revisit and improve Quick Calories, an app that helps software engineers quickly track their daily calorie intake. The original idea was born out of my own struggle to find a dieting app that fit my style - something that allowed me to quickly log calories without tedious manual entry. And now, I'm excited to share Quick Calories with HN!What is Quick Calories?- A minimalist app that makes calorie tracking lightning fast.- It keeps a running calorie total and automatically resets daily. Just track your intake and move on with your life.- The math-friendly input lets you perform arithmetic operations on calorie counts, making it easier to log complex meals or snacks. As someone who spends hours staring at screens, I know how hard it is to prioritize health when work-life balance feels like an oxymoron. Quick Calories can be an indispensable tool for a busy software engineer.I'd love to see more software engineers using
