Show HN: I built a toy that plays grandma's stories when my daughter hugs ithttps://www.storyfriend.co.uk/This was a project I built for my daughter's first birthday present.For context, I'm a surgical resident in the UK by background and am currently taking a year out of training to study a masters in computer science. My daughter just turned one. There are two things she really loves: the first is particular soft toy that she just can't live without, and the other is a good story book.Her grandparents live hours away and I didn't want her to forget what they sound like between visits. I wanted her to hear them whenever she missed them.My parents brought my brother and I up with incredible stories and books from all sorts of cultures, many of the stories being passed down from their parents before them. I didn't want my daughter to miss out on that.Finally, I was sick of missing storytime with her when I had to leave for night shifts. We are both from coastal communities. I am from Goa, India and Paul is from Malta and Puerto Rico. Seafood is deeply tied to both our cultures and communities. We saw firsthand the damage being done to our oceans and how wild fish stocks are being fished to near extinction. We also learned that fish is the main protein source for almost 55% of the world's population. Despite it not being huge consumption in America it is massive globally. Ask HN: Better places to work for burntout SWE?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=46211822I've tried my share of startups and megacorps, FAANGs. I am in a stage where I cringe on hearing a mission is so important that it needs a 996 culture. I also hate work getting stolen in the name of collaboration and politics in general thats daily business in Megacorps. I just want to bang out code, mentor juniors and deliver value in a small team that doesn't have an unhealthy obsession with growth or overworking. Maybe with rich founders who don't want to get more rich.Where can I find good places to work, especially in the US that offer: 1. Remote first setting 2. Mission oriented like Privacy, non-profit background etc (or Open Source with proven history) 3. Holocracy/Flat structureI think the above 3 criteria will really narrow down places that prioritize mission over growth/profits and automatically not pay a lot yet have a higher technical bar that deters a lot of folks who would end up optimizing for things that lead to a mess.
