How Chang Zheng 9 arrived at the “Starship-like” designhttps://www.nasaspaceflight.com/2023/04/cz-9-update/China has been very agile in developing its super-heavy lift vehicle Chang Zheng 9 (CZ-9). It initially started as a fully expendable rocket, like the Ares V or SLS rockets, but over the years developed into at first a partially reusable concept, and recently, with Starship becoming more real, it changed its design again to become a fully reusable launch vehicle. Today we want to look at the road to that design.Apr 28, 2023 12:01 AM

Show HN: A minimalist net worth tracker for individualshttps://getflow.finance/Hi HN,Today I'm launching the Net Worth Tracker by Flow Finance, a beautiful and minimalist Excel template that allows individuals to track their assets, liabilities, income, and spending on a monthly basis. The focus of this template is understanding long-term trends in the incoming and outgoing expenses for an individual—always with a focus on maximising insights while minimising user inputs. This project was created because the alternatives, frankly, are completely overwhelming. A friend of mine introduced me to the FIRE Movement and, after doing deep dives through Reddit, I tried to find templates to help facilitate a financial tracking system of my own. Every template felt like complete overkill: portfolio tracking for shares, mortgage repayment calculators, even a kind of speedometer which moved depending on my savings rate. Clever, no doubt, but unnecessary for my purposes. After years of tinkering and refining what I truly wanted out of this spreadsheet, I realised it was to cleaApr 12, 2023 11:07 PM

Show HN: Spinreactor.ai – The First AI-Designed News Bias Filterhttps://spinreactor.ai[The following post was generated by GPT-4 because it fit within the spirit of the project and I'm bad at copy]Hey HN community! I'm excited to share my latest project: SpinReactor.ai – a groundbreaking AI-designed and driven news bias filter that cuts through the noise and delivers spin-free, concise news articles.SpinReactor utilizes News API (https://newsapi.org/) to gather the latest headlines from multiple US sources. It then applies a dual layer similarity heuristic to group similar sources together. But that's just the beginning. With the help of GPT-4, SpinReactor breaks down the articles into core facts, strips away any editorializing, and synthesizes its own concise, unbiased article. It even open cites its sources for full transparency! To add some fun to the mix, we're using StableDiffusion, a text-to-image GAN, to generate article images. While they might not always capture the perfect mood, they sure make for some entertaining visuals. And guess what? The entire project, frApr 10, 2023 1:24 PM

I'd like to present a project I've been working on lately to make an app to record thought process the way it fits me.I think current note taking solutions are a poor fit for the cases where you just want do dump your thoughts on a topic quickly or where time when a note has been taken actually matters or in cases like science where you want to keep a log of actions to be able to troubleshoot or reproduce your experimentI've built my own thing - dabdab.org. You can think of it as a baby of twitter and google keep of sorts but without all social features of twitter. The base concept is a stream of messages, streams can be nested and have additional fields defined, you can make things public if you want to, but it's decided per stream and you can even share by link. It's useful for all kinds of observations and data recording. I've been using it for the last two months and it works great for me.For example I have streams to store quotes from books with my comments on them, do a quick Apr 6, 2023 9:05 AM

Ask HN: Time to Leave the US?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=35364718It feels like the US has passed a tipping point of sorts and is rapidly moving the wrong way on a lot of important issues.Biggest / most glaring being the out-of-control gun violence, esp. in our schools. That's simply unacceptable to me as a parent of two toddlers under the age of 2.Medical / Cost of a significant illness is really Fd up in this country. I had a kidney stone last year, and it cost me over 5k. Most of my friends / family would not have been able to absorb that surprise expense and would have had to use credit cards. That's not even much cash compared to what medical bills in the US can easily cost you. Families are being financially ruined by this shit.Lastly would be random, non-school violence. My wife is Asian and the increase in random asshats assaulting smaller, weaker people – esp Asian women – is just the latest WTF is going on in this country. When I step back, it seems inevitable that someone close to me will suffer from one of the 3, or possible more than 1 ofMar 29, 2023 10:25 PM

Launch HN: Metal (YC W23) – Embeddings as a Servicehttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=35341514Hey HN! We’re Taylor, James and Sergio – the founders of Metal (https://www.getmetal.io/). You can think of Metal as embeddings as a service. We help developers use embeddings without needing to build out infrastructure, storage, or tooling. Here’s a 2-minute overview: https://www.loom.com/share/39fb6df7fd73469eaf20b37248ceed0fIf you’re unfamiliar with embeddings, they are representations of real world data expressed as a vector, where the position of the vector can be compared to other vectors – thereby deriving meaning from the data. They can be used to create things like semantic search, recommender systems, clustering analysis, classification, and more.Working at companies like Datadog, Meta, and Spotify, we found it frustrating to build ML apps. Lack of tooling, infrastructure, and proper abstraction made working with ML tedious and slow. To get features out the door we’ve had to build data ingestion pipelines from scratch, manually maintain live customer datasets, build observabiMar 28, 2023 2:18 PM

Launch HN: Flower (YC W23) – Train AI models on distributed or sensitive datahttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=35260815Hey HN - we're Daniel, Taner, and Nic, and we're building Flower (https://flower.dev/), an open-source framework for training AI on distributed data. We move the model to the data instead of moving the data to the model. This enables regulatory compliance (e.g. HIPAA) and ML use cases that are otherwise impossible. Our GitHub is at https://github.com/adap/flower, and we have a tutorial here: https://flower.dev/docs/tutorial/Flower-0-What-is-FL.html.Flower lets you train ML models on data that is distributed across many user devices or “silos” (separate data sources) without having to move the data. This approach is called federated learning.A silo can be anything from a single user device to the data of an entire organization. For example, your smartphone keyboard suggestions and auto-corrections can be driven by a personalized ML model learned from your own private keyboard data, as well as data from other smartphone users, without the data being transferred from anyone’s device. Most Mar 22, 2023 1:38 PM

We’ve been busy helping companies export data to their customers – we’re currently syncing over 40bn rows per month on behalf of companies. But folks kept on asking us if we could help them import data from their customers too. They wanted the ability to offer a 1st-party reverse ETL to their customers, similar to the 1st-party ETL capability we already helped them offer. So we built that product, and here we are.Why would people want to import data? There are actually plenty of use-cases here. Imagine a usage-bMar 15, 2023 4:04 PM

How we built a social network with No-Codehttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=35070143In the Fall of last year, we launched a social network for college students with No-Code.Here’s how we did it:Last summer (after having conversations with a few dozen college students), we stumbled across a very interesting insight:*80% of college students aren’t on Facebook anymore*.Sure, tools like Snapchat and Instagram exist that represent someone’s social graph, but there isn’t a central place for students to go get guidance from other peers. For students to even do simple transactions like exchanging textbooks, finding roommates, or buying sports tickets is messy. This gave us the idea that just maybe students were hungry for a new social network to fill the void Facebook left behind. Our goal was to create a digital community where students could discuss campus life, discover housing options, and buy/sell from other students.### Step 1: Build the PlatformTo make this happen, we started by setting up a (Circle)[https://circle.so/] community specifically for our first college, the UMar 8, 2023 3:27 PM
