Instead, we relied on monthly reports from customer support and made top down decisions on what to build.Then I started a mobile app company of my own and also experienced this problem—it is actually very hard to reach users and hear their thoughts. We didn’t have a good way of contacting them, or often even know who was downloading our app. And when we did manage to contact them, they wouldn’t respond. Ask HN: Stuck as a CS Major. Is there a way out?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=30359627Long story short, I'm a junior taking CS, I hate it (sorry to everyone who loves it. Also, to clarify, my university isn't very theoretical in its approach), and because of my circumstances it's too late for me to switch majors.I originally wanted to be a physicist, but I switched midway into my first year because CS has got more financial security, physics isn't as glamorous as pop science would have you believe, academia might be a bad fit, etc etc, and I thought I'd like it. Hell, everyone thought I was in love with CS until I started complaining their ears off, because I SEEM like I'd like it. It's to the point that it affects my work. I do submit my work on time unless life gets in the way, and I do pretty decently actually, but getting through the thick wall of "fuck fuck fuck i signed up for this" and boredom takes a lot of effort — more than I thought, and I don't have any side projects because I'm not interested in anything. I see stripped content. This greatly concerns me because I thought I could copy into a text editor, review for malicious javascript and various html etc, and if all clear, then paste the same contents into eg: another page (maybe the contents of a new comment box, or run a script on my server, etc). I feel things have become overdesigned, overcomplicated, overly precious, and bloated.I like lightweight websites and fast native apps with OS GUIs and conventions. If I am going to design in the tech or tech-adjacent space, these are the things I want to work on. But instead every job opportunity I find is to work on a proprietary branded design system for a web app hell-bent on capturing and disempowering customers by dumbing things down as much as possible through obfuscation, abstraction, and infantilizing copy and aesthetics. About 20% of the US Medicare budget of $776 Bln is used in supporting patients with kidney disease. A similar percentage is taken by the UK’s NHS. It talked about how someone inexperienced might walk into a kitchen and see superficial signs that it was dirty, but an experienced kitchen worker would know that the parts that matter were clean. There might be scuffs and scorch marks that aren't worth cleaning, while the spots that could grow bacteria or contaminate food have been kept spotless. This was used as an analogy for what really makes a codebase "clean", distinguishing the things that matter from the things that are purely aesthetic. I came to uni to try to get a Major in CS but there was a grade cutoff and I didn't make the cut. Luckily I was able to get the Math Major and have been doing it till now. My GPA hasn't improved however, and I am sitting close to a 2.0. I will graduate but with such a GPA, is grad school even worth thinking about? I would like to do something in CS more. The employers were absolutely awful to their employees. I personally had several workplace violations (unpaid expenses, asked to clock out and work, lack of medical accommodations, etc). During this time, I was forced into working on a social media startup they founded.I was given a preliminary equity letter in my time there -- but they hadn't setup all the actual legal for dispersing shares. The document clearly states I had 1 year vested in the startup, though.Fast forward about a year after; I was put on indefinite unpaid suspension -- and I literally had no choice to quit.
