Ask HN: What types of alternative communities have you seen work or not and why?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49395758I’ve always been interested in alternatives to the discrete, isolated mode of living that most Westerners are familiar with. Think an individual, couple, or nuclear family living on their own property without sharing resources with neighbours or extended family. There are a wide range of alternatives out there, from multigenerational households to ‘intentional’ communities of over 1000 people. Some of the larger examples include urban communities like Christiania in Amsterdam or Hunziker Areal in Zurich and of course the more traditional rural communes - often founded during the counter-culture revolution of the late 60s and 70s. Most examples that I’m aware of have some kind of ‘intention’ other than simply existing. Things like low energy use (e.g. so called 2000 watt societies like Hunziker Areal), shared religious or spiritual beliefs, or some other foundational principals like concern for the environment. Another thing that a lot of these communities often share is some kind of ent

Show HN: Flight Ledger – Track your flights, what they cost, and United statushttps://app.flightledger.netHello HN,Flight Ledger is a private ledger of your flights, focused on (but not limited to) the United Airlines ecosystem. I am a physicist who has been based near two United hubs, first SFO and now IAH, and I fly United a lot, mostly for work.I built this app to track my flights, flight expenses, and Premier status qualification without having to log into various accounts. All the imports (such as MileagePlus activity csv, .eml receipts, or Flighty/myFlightRadar24 exports) and data filling are manual.A primary feature is that the app requires no sign-up and has no backend. Everything is stored locally, using SQLite and WebAssembly. This means that frequent back-ups are advisable to avoid losing data. For more robust backups and multi-device sync, the app also supports sync via Google Drive. I use this option for myself, but would be curious about other possible solutions.Perhaps the main features that differentiate it from other apps are that the app tracks costs and metrics like CPM

I think some of you might enjoy the interactive visuals.

Why is the DOJ investigating Andreessen Horowitz’s board seats?https://techcrunch.com/video/why-is-the-doj-investigating-andreessen-horowitzs-board-seats/Andreessen Horowitz has two partners sitting on the boards of companies that now compete with each other: Ben Horowitz at Databricks and Martin Casado at Fivetran. Nothing too scandalous on the surface, except the Department of Justice has reportedly been investigating the arrangement for almost a year, dusting off a 112-year-old antitrust law that’s rarely used against VCs. Board conflicts aren’t exactly new, and these companies weren’t necessarily direct competitors when a16z first invested […]

Show HN: eInk Optimized Manga with Kindle Comic Converter (+Kobo/KOreader)https://github.com/ciromattia/kccKindle Comic Converter optimizes black & white (or color) comics and manga for E-ink ereaders like Kindle, Kobo, ReMarkable, and more. Pages display in fullscreen without margins, with proper fixed layout support. KCC runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux.KCC's main goal is maximum image quality at significantly smaller file size. For example, KCC1) can compress a 600 MB manga volume from Humble Bundle to 100 MB. This is mostly accomplished by downscaling to the native resolution of your specific device. This can also improve battery life, page turn speed, and general performance on underpowered ereaders with small memory and storage capacities.2) fixes black levels to avoid gray/faded blacks found in many Kindle Store manga3) fixes the rainbow effect on Kaleido 3 color eink without blur using the Discrete Fourier Transform (community PR)It can also semi-automatically join pre-split 2 page spreads and has several KOreader optimizations as well.

Coding Agents killed my identity. How do you feel?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49389408I always was a nerdy, deeply technical programmer. Contributing-to-open-source-and-reading-papers-in-my-spare-time type of programmer.Programming is like a game of chess for me: winning (i.e. delivering a product) is important, but only if I played this game myself. I don't enjoy winning if my opponent disconnected. I don't enjoy beating people who don't know how to move pieces. I don't enjoy winning with an engine, and coding agents are basically "winning with a chess engine".I started to use AI for coding a long time ago, when copilot was first introduced. At first, I was happy: "wow, this can write boring boilerplate and unit tests". Time went by, agents got better, time spent writing code myself went down. Half a year ago I suddenly realized I hadn't written any code for over a month, and I am a full-time software dev without any managing work. Not only did I stop writing code, but agents also became pretty good at proposing plans and architectures, and I was mostly providing missi

What a record-breaking El Nino could mean for the worldhttps://www.france24.com/en/video/20260821-what-a-record-breaking-el-nino-could-mean-for-the-worldThis year's El Nino is on track to be the strongest on record, threatening to unleash extreme weather across the globe and make 2027 the hottest recorded year by far. It is expected to be the most "intense" El Nino in more than a century, the head of long-range forecasting at the UK's Met Office warned on Friday. Stacked on top of long-term human-caused climate change, the temporary jolt will offer a glimpse of the heat the world can expect by the late 2030s, experts say.

If you organize your code into folders named domain, use-case, application, and infra, the app will show the domain code at the top, allowing you to easily see the most important changes first.

Ask HN: Do teams really need to use GitHub?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49386514Enterprises can self-host, sure. Open source projects uses it for the the network effects of GitHub. But why does a small software team need to use GitHub?I understand the ecosystem argument. Once you've got your repos, CI/CD, PRs, code reviews, packages, integrations, etc. all wired into GitHub, moving everything is a pain. But Git itself is distributed, and GitHub has a pretty open plugin/integration system. There are also perfectly capable alternatives like GitLab, Bitbucket, Forgejo, Gitea, SourceHut, etc.So what is the actual thing that makes a 10–20 person software company stick with GitHub? Is it mostly switching costs? The ecosystem? Developer familiarity? Something else? And if you were to start a project today, would you still go with GitHub?And a slightly more personal question.I've had a rough idea for what a new GitHub could look like if it were built specifically for software that is increasingly being written by AI agents, and specifically for companies rather than open-

I’m building https://unfetch.com, something like Codex but focused on Google Ads.It has:- Keyword research support (like Ahrefs)- A Google Ads connector- Memory, sandbox, and artifacts- Automations (coming soon, for example, automatically scanning for and adding negative keywords every day)While I iron out the last few details, I’d like to help 10/15 companies run their Google Ads campaigns.I would primarily manage your ads manually while testing the same workflows in Unfetch. I’ll continue optimizing it until I’m confident that it can replace me for most routine daily/weekly monitoring and optimization tasks. If you’re currently running ads or planning to do so, email me at @gmail.com.

Show HN: Youtilitics, energy usage analytics from utility data, no hardwarehttps://youtilitics.com/I posted an early version of this 2 years ago. Rebuilt most of it since then, so posting again with what's actually different.Youtilitics still pulls interval data your utility already collects (Green Button/ESPI — 15-60 min whole-house kWh) and turns it into usage analytics. The analytics stack is different: baseline anomaly detection (median/MAD by time-of-day bucket, not a flat threshold), overnight step-change alerts, usage heatmaps, cycle-over-cycle comparisons, etc. It is still based on a model trained on human-labelled data: used to differentiate baseline (eg vampire load) vs EV vs HVAC vs the rest. Inference runs with a python script when new data is received from the utility.I also changed the mobile app. It is still mainly used to store the user credentials without us having them (they never leave the device), for security/privacy reasons. This is used to scrape usage data from the utility dashboard, when they don't support Green Button. However now it also runs an embedded P
