Show HN: Programmatic – a REPL for creating labeled datahttps://programmatic.humanloop.comHey HN, I’m Jordan cofounder of Humanloop (YC S20) and I’m excited to show you Programmatic — an annotation tool for building large labeled datasets for NLP without manual annotation.Programmatic is like a REPL for data annotation. You: 1. Write simple rules/functions that can approximately label the data 2. Get near-instant feedback across your entire corpus 3. Iterate and improve your rules Finally, it uses a Bayesian label model [1] to convert these noisy annotations into a single, large, clean dataset, which you can then use for training machine learning models. You can programmatically label millions of datapoints in the time taken to hand-label hundreds. What we do differently from weak supervision packages like Snorkel/skweak[1] is to focus on UI to give near-instantaneous feedback. We love these packages but when we tried to iterate on labeling functions we had to write a ton of boilerplate code and wrestle with pandas to understand what was going on. Building a dataset programm

Ask HN: Any problems with a proof that ML is insufficient for AI?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=28168059EXAMPLE1) Agents receive historical visual information (X, eg., photo) of chairs (T) and facts about those rooms (Y, eg., their color).2) They produce functions which take visual information (eg., a photo) of an unknown chair, and can produce descriptions of the unknown chair which are accurate if the visual information is accurate. (Eg., it is red if the photo accurately depicts its redness)(3) ML systems must receive the same type and amount of visual information when learning and when inferring; and produce the same type of descriptions. Eg., an ML system cannot take a b/w photo, if it has only seen color photos, and conclude a color accurately; even if the b/w photo is accurate. Nor can it draw a color version.4) Humans are able to receive visual information in a form they haven't seen before (eg., a child sees a b/w photo for the first time), which contains less information than what they have seen before (eg., no color), and produce accurate descriptions in many forms -- eg., pai

Languages you must know #9 (Haskell)https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=26761072Haskell. You knew it was coming.Types have taken over the programming world. Maybe not your corner. Not yet. But it's coming for you.Types are a "programming language for data". Usually data was just something that the procedural programs pushed around, shaping, sampling, and mangling at will. Since the compiler and the programming language had no information about the shape of data there was no way to detect data-related errors.Haskell is one of many different attacks on the data-shape problem.Haskell also prevents "drive-by" data damage, forcing program fragments to be "pure functions" that don't create side-effects. Every time you call a function with the same input you get the same output.Haskell programming changes the way you think about data, which is one of the key ideas in "why" and "what", which we are promoting. In addition, Haskell is one of the "Harper Trinity" languages. Bob Harper (CMU) points out that there are 3 different ways to express things; Proofs, Category Theory,

Ask HN: My startup has failed, what are the largest companies in SF proper?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=9916983After nearly a year of trying to tackle a really tough Fintech problem (Reducing risk by shifting moral hazard in a particular asset class), I failed getting the agreements we need and I have decided to shut the company down. The people that were working with me on the problem have now found other opportunities and I am trying to figure out what company would be best to join.I am only 1/8 programmer at best, but I have a really strong finance background so I believe the best place for me to help a company would be in their finance department (FP&A, M&A or investor relations) which are all functions of large companies.I have worked pretty hard at generating a list of companies with a major office or headquarters in SF. Does anyone know of any others I am missing? Does anyone have any other advice while looking? My plan is to reach out to finance people at each of the companies I am interested in, setup a coffee and figure out where the best fit is.I would also be interested in joining a

I know there are number of HN readers on android. But couldn't find a one suitable for daily use. So I started developing this app. News articles, comments open in default browser of the device. Click on title of the item to open the article and anywhere else to open comments. Pull down to refresh. Swipe left and right to change the tabs. This is only the first phase of application. Lot of functions yet to be implement (you can read more in Google play listing). Before developing further I would love to have some feedback. Potentially Ignorant CompSci Professor Making Student's Life Miserablehttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=512880I'm presently tutoring a student who is taking a C programming class. This student isn't a comp sci student (engineering discipline separate of computers), but really enjoys programming and seems to wish to do it as a hobby. However, my student is struggling and the nature of the professor's restrictions on how their projects are constructed as well as the strictly outlined structure of the code makes it impossible for them to: 1. Learn to write their code in a structured and safe fashion 2. Write code that doesn't develop subtle behaviors and problems due to a lack of understanding of pointers.Amongst the sundry other restrictions choking off their ability to complete the coursework in a timely fashion is the inability to ever use global variables. They are outright banned. While I am fully aware of how those can turn ugly, utilizing extern + static properly largely invalidates these problems. The exact structure of the functions and their arguments, prototypes, and definitions are outl
