Show HN: I built on-device TTS app because I run out of audiobooks on a flighthttps://loudreader.ioI didn't want to upload my own material to a third party cloud service, use mobile data for voice synthesis and kept running out of podcast queue on flights, so I spent a while trying to get Kokoro running on my iPhone.LoudReader is what came out of it - an iOS app that reads essays, articles, and books aloud, fully on-device. No account, no network after install. The model running once reading a sentence was the easy part. Making it not feel like a demo was the rest: streaming synthesis so playback starts before the sentence finishes, porting misaki to swift because I could only find python releases, thermal monitoring and strategy was a tough one as well. Runs well on iPhone 14 Pro(what I have) and newer. Tested on my mom's iPhone 12 Pro and it chokes sometimes, so I ported KittenTTS as a lighter fallback for older devices. The whole project took around 2-3 months on the weekends with claude code and codex.Smooth TTS was the hard part but the app around it grew larger than I expected

Show HN: Financial Web Tools – decision-focused calculatorshttps://financialwebtools.com/I built a set of lightweight financial decision tools (buy vs rent, house hacking, retirement, debt payoff) after trying to model a condo purchase for my girlfriend.Backstory: My girlfriend was looking into buying a condo, and I was trying to convey to her how the costs add up, even compared to renting. I knew from my personal experience with house-hacking in Seattle right out of college that the simple "renting is throwing money down the drain" philosophy can lead you to rush into buying properties without actually understanding the financial implications. I was having a tough time conveying this to her verbally, so I built a "house-hacking calculator" for her using Codex to visually model how investing a down payment and renting compares to buying a condo.Once I finished that initial prototype for her, I realized I had built something more generally useful. A lot of the available financial tools online are either overly complex for decisions like this (require modeling tax brackets,

Show HN: Three backtested quant strategies as Jupyter notebookshttps://mattitude8861.gumroad.com/l/QuantStrategyTemplatesBundleI've spent a few years building quant strategies and most of the work isn't the math — it's the plumbing: getting clean data, structuring the backtest so it doesn't look at the future, generating a readable tearsheet. I packaged three of my working strategies as self-contained notebooks so someone can go from zero to a proper backtest in an afternoon. The three strategies:1. Funding Rate Carry — Goes long assets with consistently negative funding (market paying you to hold) while hedging directional exposure with a small short on a correlated index. Data from Binance public API, no account needed.2. Momentum + Regime — Standard cross-sectional momentum with a regime filter. The regime filter uses a hidden Markov model to identify high/low volatility regimes and sizes positions down during risk-off states. This cuts most of the drawdown that raw momentum has during trend reversals.3. Vol Mean Reversion — Trades the VIX term structure spread (VIX3M/VIX ratio) against realized vol. Core id

Show HN: Tip for users with Samsung Galaxy S7 with broken displayhttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=47770272In 2016, I decided to spend about $800 (€700) on an upper mid-range phone for that time: the Samsung Galaxy S7. Years later, I replaced the battery with one bought on AliExpress, and it didn’t satisfy me. I also dropped the phone and replaced the screen simply because I was attached to that model—it felt much higher quality to the touch than more modern devices. I wanted it like when I first bought it: pristine. I promised myself I’d use a case and replaced its “Super AMOLED” screen. This replacement didn’t satisfy me either. It was done at an out-of-warranty repair service, and the screen quality wasn’t the same as the original. Moreover, this process caused the battery to move around inside the phone. My son dropped the S7 a second time. That case didn’t live up to its promise. I had backups of the data, but something still left me unsatisfied—I couldn’t go through a proper “mourning” for its sudden, total screen failure. But I decided it was time to move on. A couple of years later,

Ask HN: What funding models exist for a search engine?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=47767117Let's say I wanted to build a web scraper + search engine product that did not feature ads at all. What other funding models exist? How viable are they?In particular, what if you sold anonymized data about trends/insights into consumer behavior to other businesses? At scale, is it conceivable that such a strategy would be profitable?Under this model, the search results would be incentivized to be as accurate as possible. There would be incentives against influencing rankings to maximize profits (which differs from the classic display ads and the Google Ad Words models) because you would want your understanding of consumer behavior to be as untainted as possible.Thoughts?

Show HN: Early Reader – Free open source reading app I built for my 4-year-oldhttps://github.com/melvinmt/early-reader-appOver the holidays I went looking for a reading app for my 4-year-old daughter. The top app in this space charges $500/month. Since that's a bit much to pay for an app, I figured I could vibe code something better in a few days, so I tried. The app uses DISTAR phonics, which is a method from the 60s by Siegfried Engelmann. The core idea is simple: teach sounds before letter names, then blend sounds into words, then words into sentences. There's a specific sequence that builds on itself. On top of that I added spaced repetition, same algorithm as Anki. Cards come back at increasing intervals depending on how well the kid does. This keeps sessions short, maybe 5-10 minutes, and the retention is noticeably better than just drilling the same set of cards every day. Each card has an AI-generated illustration and spoken audio. All 721 cards are pre-generated and bundled with the app. Nothing calls an API. The whole thing works offline. What's in it: 721 cards (letters, digraphs, words, sentences)

Show HN: A Bomberman-style 1v1 game where LLMs compete in real timehttps://github.com/klemenvod/TokenBrawlA few weeks ago, ARC-AGI 3 was released. For those unfamiliar, it’s a benchmark designed to study agentic intelligence through interactive environments.I'm a big fan of these kinds of benchmarks as IMO they reveal so much more about the capabilities and limits of agentic AI than static Q&A benchmarks. They are also more intuitive to understand when you are able to actually see how the model behaves in these environments.I wanted to build something in that spirit, but with an environment that pits two LLMs against each other. My criteria were:1. Strategic & Real-time. The game had to create genuine tradeoffs between speed and quality of reasoning. Smaller models can make more moves but less strategic ones; larger models move slower but smarter. 2. Good harness. I deliberately avoided visual inputs — models are still too slow and not accurate enough with them (see: Claude playing Pokémon). Instead, a harness translates the game state into structured text, and the game engine renders the
