Performance and telemetry analysis of Trae IDE, ByteDance's VSCode forkhttps://github.com/segmentationf4u1t/trae_telemetry_researchHi HN, I was evaluating IDEs for a personal project and decided to test Trae, ByteDance's fork of VSCode. I immediately noticed some significant performance and privacy issues that I felt were worth sharing. I've written up a full analysis with screenshots, network logs, and data payloads in the linked post. Here are the key findings:1. Extreme Resource Consumption: Out of the box, Trae used 6.3x more RAM (~5.7 GB) and spawned 3.7x more processes (33 total) than a standard VSCode setup with the same project open. The team has since made improvements, but it's still significantly heavier.2. Telemetry Opt-Out Doesn't Work (It Makes It Worse): I found Trae was constantly sending data to ByteDance servers (byteoversea.com). I went into the settings and disabled all telemetry. To my surprise, this didn't stop the traffic. In fact, it increased the frequency of batch data collection. The telemetry "off" switch appears to be purely cosmetic.3. What's Being Sent: Even with telemetry "disabled,"

Ask HN: Help me navigate a PIP at a remote startup in the Netherlandshttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=44669716Hey HN,I'm in a tough spot and could use some outside perspective, especially from anyone who's navigated startup politics or EU/Dutch employment law.I'm a senior engineer with a background at bigger tech companies in the US. A few months ago, I took a job at a small-ish (around 150 people), fully remote tech startup based in Europe. The pay is good for the EU, though definitely a big step down from my US salary. The main reason for the move was to get a visa and work in Europe, and the project (AI stuff) seemed really exciting. It's been a chaotic ride. The project has been in a constant "prototyping" phase, with the product direction pivoting at least 4-5 times since I joined. As the main frontend dev, I've been building and refactoring constantly to keep up. It's been high-pressure, but I thought we were making good progress.Recently, things took a sharp turn. My manager, who is new to management and I report directly to, put me on a formal PIP. This was a total shock, as it was lite

Show HN: Digital Twin Proxy – Turn web browsing into memory for AI agentshttps://github.com/kstonekuan/digital-twin-proxyI built Digital Twin Proxy as an open-source tool that logs your web browsing and uses a local LLM to generate an analysis of your browsing patterns. The goal is to create a "digital twin" of your online activity that can be used to provide real-time context to other AI agents.GitHub repo: https://github.com/kstonekuan/digital-twin-proxyHow it works: It uses a Squid proxy to capture HTTP/S traffic, and then a Rust application sends the logs to a local LLM (via Ollama) to analyze and create a digital twin based on web browsing patterns. Why I built this: I wanted a way to give my AI agents more personalized and real-time context. By analyzing my web browsing, agents can tailor their responses, anticipate my needs, and even get better at using tools through "context engineering."Key features:- HTTP/S Traffic Logging: Captures all web requests.- AI-Powered Analysis: Uses a local LLM (Ollama) to analyze traffic.- Flexible Operation Modes: Can run in the background, log continuously, or perf

Ask HN: Undo muscle loss due to chronic overusehttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=44668651I have a problem that I have a heavy physical regiment because I have an autistic child with ADHD who needs constant safeguarding and physical interaction, picking up throwing around, take to playgrounds 6-9 hours a day on weekend, constant watching etc.I'm in Denmark so I get some help with this, but my muscles are basically worn out from overuse and I used to be quite muscular. My legs especially, I find it difficult to go up ladders, and other things requiring leg strength because I never get an adequate chance to rest my legs up (if my child goes away for a couple of days I need to spend those days fixing everything around the house, so constant movement)Part of this is age obviously but from my experience guys who are in their late 50s generally don't have these problems if they have kept in shape, to me it seems a result completely of over stress and the problems of age regarding rebuilding muscles once they are torn down.So what I'm asking is what medications etc. would one reco

What began as a fun weekend project has now evolved into a core part of how our team works every day. These bots live in Slack and handle real, non-trivial workflows such as:- When a new signup comes in, one of them enriches the lead via Apollo, drafts a personalized email, and drops it into my mailbox.- If someone mentions a new task in any channel, the bot jumps in, asks a few clarifying questions, and files a Linear ticket.- Collecting customer info from Stripe for transaction failures and bringing it into the slack thread automatically.- Scouring the web and drafting blog posts - sure you can do this with ChatGPT. But doing it collaboratively on Slack gives a different overall experience.- We even made them proactive. For example, if someone talks about sprint planning, the bot jumps into the thread and asks if it should help break things down into tasks. At first, this felt like "just automation.

Show HN: Homemade robot playing piano concert in SF (7/26)https://grayarea.org/event/deru-we-will-live-on/Figured there are probably some folks on here that might be interested in coming to a robot piano concert at Gray Area in SF this Saturday night (7/26). More comprehensive technical write up to come (eventually) but the show is by LA composer Deru (https://deru.la) and features 3 robot/player pianos that sit over the top of traditional upright pianos and are controlled live over USB MIDI by way of an ESP32-S3.The story of how it all came about is kinda long but Ben (Deru) recorded an album (We Will Live On: https://deru.bandcamp.com/album/we-will-live-on), during covid on a Yamaha Disklavier (the album will be performed as part of the concert). To try and work out how we could actually tour the album we found a community of homebrew player piano folks that started with Brandon Switzer's work (https://github.com/bbswitzer/pianoproject) which led to a Discord group (https://discord.gg/vE9uPg2y) and then to Josh Phillips's work evolving it into an over the top player (https://github.com/j

Launch HN: Promi (YC S24) – Personalize e-commerce discounts and retail offershttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=44649115Hey HN! I’m Peter from Promi (https://www.promi.ai/). We’re building a platform for ecommerce merchants to send realtime personalized discounts, optimized with AI (obviously)Demo: https://youtu.be/BCYNCqb4fUc, Sales Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WiO1S7RBn-oAll the big tech companies send personalized discounts - Uber, DoorDash, Google, etc. In fact, I was the product lead overseeing discounts at Uber, so if you’ve gotten a promotion on Uber Rides or Eats, that was our tech. These personalization models often generate >30% more revenue vs. non-personalized discounts (cost-neutral that is), so this is a hugely impactful product. It’s no surprise then that other merchants want to follow suit. Merchants don’t want to waste discounts on customers who would have purchased anyway. Frankly it’s not a new idea to offer a software solution to personalize discounts - plenty of other startups have entered this space with a similar product. The biggest problem with personalizing discounts fo

Show HN: An API for human-powered browser taskshttps://browser-work.com/At APM Help, we have a large team that performs repetitive, browser-based tasks. Years ago, to manage this work securely and get a clear audit trail, we built an internal platform we call "Hub." It's essentially a locked-down environment where our team works that records their sessions, tracks every interaction, and prevents data from being copied or shared. It's been our internal source of truth for years.More recently, like many companies, we've been building more automation. And like everyone else, we've seen our automations fail on edge cases—a weirdly formatted invoice our parser can't read, a website layout change that breaks a scraper, etc. Our team would have to manually step in to fix these. We realized other developers must have this exact same problem, but without a 250-person team on standby. So we connected our old, battle-tested Hub to a new, modern front door: a Human-in-the-Loop (HITL) API. We're calling it browser-work.com.The idea is simple: when you hit a task that ne

Built an AI tool to automate staying updated market moves on your portfoliohttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=44624599I love investing but I don't have the time anymore to keep track of all market moves on a weekly/day-to-day basis, and make up how it impacts my portfolio.I wanted to test out Cursor and OpenAI/Gemini and I built financebro.io. It uses Gemini and OpenAI to scrape the web for the latest news related to the portfolio tickers. It also gathers Price Targets and any updates to it for each stock. It sends out end-of-trading week recaps to the user on email, every Friday.I absolutely love it for my personal use and I have some friends that also actively use it. It's a bit pricy to maintain but I guess I'm looking to see if I can get a few paying customers for some validation to keep developing this.https://financebro.ioHave a look!
