UK Customs drilled holes into my hand-carved table imports... what should I do?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=7477542I recently exported 4 beautiful, hand painted end tables from Pakistan to the UK, sent by courier. The packages were perfectly fine when I shipped them form Pakistan but when I received them in London, the tables had numerous holes drilled into them; holes the size of a ballpoint head.The tables are completed ruined, and there's no way I can use them now. GBP 400, down the drain. No one from Customs called me to notify me, nor did they leave a slip with contact information.This is really pissing me off. I assume they were doing a drug check, but surely there has got to be a better way to do this. Do I have any recourse to get UK Customs to compensate me? First month sales of USD5k, how do we keep growing?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=7334373My wife and I recently launched a home decor website where we sell unique, hand crafted home design products, such as tables, rugs, throws, ceramics and so on, sourced from traditional craft makers in Morocco, Kashmir and more.We have 11 customers in our first month, sales of over USD5k, and 30% of customers came back to make second purchases. In short: those who saw our products really liked us; those who bought them liked them even more and came back for seconds. We have some good insights into why people like us as well -- 1) our taste (vibrant colours; useful stuff; high quality materials; fits with modern decor); 2) our trust factor (we check everything ourselves, get them from source, and founders are highly credible - IVY league, etc., and 3) stories- our products each have unique stories, invoking a strong emotional reaction.The way we got these 11 customers is an exhibition we threw at our place, and some random/chance meetings with customers at friends' parties.The problem/chMar 3, 2014 3:53 PM

Here is a little background on me: An amateur coder who spends many hours every day on his laptop (although recently I haven't been doing enough coding practise). I'm left handed, mainly stick to ubuntu and tend to use gvim, I hardly ever use emacs. I looked up "emacs pinky", but this seems to be associated with pain in the finger (here's a nice picture http://www.flickr.com/photos/gabrielsaldana/4468068807/in/photostream/). I had a quick look at carpal tunnel syndrome, but this is associated with the median nerve. The pinky is innervated by the ulnar nerve, and I can't recall any injuries in the past few days. Also over the last few months I have made an effort to keep a reasonable sitting position when typing. Anyone with similar experiences? I am not asking for medical advice or an "online diagnosis", since I can make an appointment with the local witch doctor after the weekend finishes.Oct 27, 2013 1:23 AM
