Ask HN: How do you cope when your startup contracts?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=48453224The same general situation has happened to me twice now and I am wondering if it’s something I can break free from or if it’s just the nature of the Startup beast - or what. There seems to be some kind of bubble that starts drying up investment in a startup where I am a technical lead. Both times, things seem to be going well and then 2 years in there are rounds of layoffs due to factors outside my/product’s control where the result is the same. I end up as the last tech generalist. It falls to me to write as much of the code as I can, manage (if any are left) engineers in my department, running support basically on my own, owning a large part of the product roadmap, working with the customers on support and implementations, working with integration partners, plus a slowly expanding list of responsibilities as new stuff falls on reduced teams. I pick up new domains pretty quick (finance, insurance, compliance), switch contexts well. I’ve always been the person who just figures it out -

No textures, no audio files, no 3-D models, no fonts.Everything is generated in code:- Terrain is fractal-noise (fbm) heightmaps rendered as a GPU triangle mesh, height-banded and slope-shaded, that composites with a hand-built 2-D HUD and gets blit-upscaled nearest-neighbour for the pixelated look. - Ships & buildings are flat-shaded low-poly hulls, a handful of triangles each. - Music & SFX come from a from-scratch synth (square/saw/triangle/noise/rumble voices plus a Karplus-Strong plucked string, with envelopes, overdrive and a limiter). Fully freestanding. To my knowledge this is probably the only project of this kind, and the only libc implementation not in C. There _might_ be some Rust libc variant out there but I couldn't find any.Why does this exist? There is no login, no ads, runs client side, uses localStorage and all the state is encoded in the URL itself and you can share it.The calendar feature is nice. I wanted to build my own schedule for the games I was interested in. There is full calendar that you can subscribe to as well, that gets updated as the fixtures get decided. I also wanted to be able to interactively change things and visualize the whole knockout stage.All the state is in the URL fragment. It's a handrolled compact byte format. About 203 bytes, ~217 characters. The URL has the full snapshot so the link you share always renders the same brackets. It's versioned so I can change the format and not break links out there.At this point it does everything I wanted it to do for me. Might be some real howlers in there. Let me know if you spot one.
