Show HN: React-cookie-banner – A cookie banner for React with minimal configHi HN,I built a React library that aims to simplify making websites GDPR-compliant with a fully integrated cookie banner solution.I found existing solutions to be too simple (just giving an "Accept" button which isn't compliant) or too complex (requiring a lot of configuration and setup or paid external services). With this library, services simply need to be wrapped inside a `CookieService` component and the library will take care of the rest, handling:- Displaying a cookie banner - Managing/storing user consent - Conditionally loading external scripts based on consent - Google Consent Mode - Multi-language support and customizationWould love to hear thoughts, feedback, or suggestions!Live demo: https://vantezzen.github.io/react-cookie-banner/

Show HN: Enabling text-only LLMs to "see" documents using Spatial Text RenderingHey HN! I recently published an article titled "Spatial Text Rendering: Pushing the Limits of Spatial Understanding in LLMs" where I share a technique I've been using for quite some time now to help text-only LLMs process visually complex documents before Vision Language Models (VLMs) became usable. I thought it might be useful for anyone working with document processing!Summary: This article introduces Spatial Text Rendering (STR), a method that bridges the gap between visually complex documents and text-only LLMs by preserving the crucial spatial information that gives documents their meaning. While Vision-Language Models (VLMs) continue to advance, we needed an immediate solution that could handle complex financial documents in the MEA region (but not limited to it), including Arabic text and mixed right-to-left scripts. STR uses image processing techniques to extract the document's underlying structure and render it as spatially-aware text that LLMs can understand.Key Points and Hi

Show HN: LinkedIn sucks, so I built a better oneLinkedIn feels more like Facebook every day — noisy feeds, fake engagement, and everyone shouting into the void.Thats why I used to built a personal microsite on Squarespace and uploaded a video resume to YouTube to stand out - it helped me land interviews and get into Big Tech. But I always wondered: why isn’t there a platform designed to help you stand out like that?So I built OpenSpot: a public, curated platform where you can showcase who you are — with video, audio, and proof of your work. No endless feeds. No humblebrags. Just real people open to new opportunities. We’ve already onboarded a few companies, so recruiters can reach out to you directly. But you can also connect with other standout folks and supercharge your network.Just upload your resume and we´ll automatically generate your profile in under 1 minute. It’s early, but feels like something people actually need. Would love your thoughts.

Show HN: Kindredly.ai – a content-sharing tool for familiesHi HN,I built Kindredly.AI, a private content-management/sharing platform designed for families. It’s accessible as a browser extension so storing, organizing, and sharing content (links, notes, images, small videos, etc.) is about as easy as using bookmarks. It also includes parental controls for families with kids and a growing curated online library. Why I Built It:I wanted a lightweight way to save things I found interesting (like many of the things I’ve found here on HN) and sometimes share them with my family, including my young kids. Whatever the solution, I didn’t want to expose my kids to a constant stream of addictive content and ads. Most content-filtering solutions aren’t good enough—they don't flag "junk" as inappropriate, and most whitelist tools are a pain to maintain. After struggling to get a hodgepodge of apps working, I realized the world needs a tool that’s free and simple enough for a busy single parent to use.It should respect privacy and help parents raise thoughtf

Discussion: Concept of "The Codestream"Hey everyone, I just wanted to run a concept past the community, and am keen to hear thoughts from all sides. I’m currently designing a fictional positive future world for a project, and I’ve been giving a lot of thought into how future healthy societies may exist, and their structure - and Open-Source is a key part of this.Looking at a lot of utopias in Sci Fi (e.g. Star Trek), future technology, while important, is kind of a veneer over the actual fiction which is usually a coherent society aligned with certain cultural values. E.g. Picard explains that in 24th Century, for humanity “the acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in our lives. We work to better ourselves, and the rest of humanity” (https://youtu.be/PV4Oze9JEU0 - 3:00). This rests on the assumption that the collective humanity in Star Trek society are driven by those values. Yes they have matter replicators, but as Manu Saadia argues in Trekonomics (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trekonomics), even those requ

Show HN: Koobert – an AI-powered workout app for ultra-efficient trainingHi HN!For the last 6 months, I was skipping the gym and half-assing my workouts. Even though I was pretty ambitious, I lacked the structure I needed—and I wasn’t about to become that gym rat who spends every waking minute obsessing over training. I just wanted something efficient. So I built Koobert, an AI-powered workout app that finds the sweet spot between personalized workout plans and a community vibe that keeps you accountable. Here’s what I noticed: other apps are either cringy with their generic default programs or so ultra-specific that they leave beginners (or anyone who just wants quick results without all the anatomical breakdowns) in the dust.Fun side note: my girlfriend (the ultimate spur-of-the-moment motivator) is already on her third workout streak. She’s got her entire workout history in the app—and it even generated a program tailored to her spike injury.I have to say, I was honestly astonished by what AI can do for workouts. I thought it’d give me crappy exercise reco

Ask HN: What's the best oldish (~10 years or so) second hand laptop for travel?I need to buy a new laptop soon, and want something cheap and second hand for travel. I have an old Latitude but it's pretty clunky and heavy.I've been looking at an Asus B9 which is about twice as powerful and weighs half as much, but thought there may be better options.Ideally I'm looking for something that only requires a USB cable to charge, no brick or propitiatory extension, is light weight and has a semi-decent battery life. Being powerful enough to at least run counter-strike on the lowest of settings would be a plus.

Software Architecture Draft with Request Duplicator and FailoverI am looking for opinions on my approach on this architecture draft. Please read carefully and until the end, and don't forget to see the diagram link at the end of this post. For context, I am building the BEAM Devs app for the Elixir, Erlang and Gleam community, and instead of building tech debt from day one to ship faster, I want to start with a solid base skeleton that enables me to progressively build a resilient and robust architecture from the start. It's much easier to begin this way than to add it as an afterthought. In my first two UK roles, software architecture always included a failover system, an independent, exact copy of production running in another cloud or on-premises datacenter. This differs from redundancy within the same provider via availability zones or whatever other approach. In this approach, the switch from production to the failover happens by manually switching the IP for the server in the DNS, which has a very short TTL. In the case the cloud provider is hav

Ask HN: Mobile games that can be beatI recently downloaded and played an idle game that was taking up an inordinate amount of my time. What was originally a way to just kill some time here and there quickly spiraled into a major distraction to my work and relationships. I've deleted it off of my phone, but now I'm thinking about what makes these games so addicting, and one quality I thought up was that there's never really an "end" to these games. There's always a new objective, always some special event, always some challenge that wasn't there before. When I think about the games I considered truly great (most of them from the N64 era), all of these games had something in common, mainly out of necessity: they had an end. Peach was found, Hyrule was freed, or all of the skaters and parks were unlocked.I realize that this is antithetical to the objective of most mobile games. The objective there is to get you to watch ads and pay to win. It's more of a Skinner box than a piece of art.Are there any good examples of "beatable
