Ask HN: How do you diversify your income?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=11407888As I get older, I'm trying to focus less on absolute financial independence than a sort of income redundancy, where I have enough sources of revenue to sustain my barest expenses in case something goes wrong. My dream: four or five streams, requiring different levels of investment and labor, but generally clocking in under 40 hours and, to the point where I could lose one or face a serious cutback in two, and never be in jeopardy.I know this overlaps with the passive income obsession, so I'm excited to hear HN's thoughts, but I'm concerned less with overall effort than reducing the risk tied to my income coming solely from my job.I'm super interested to hear if any HN'ers have tried to diversify their income outside of tech, maybe through some small-ball physical investments like ATMs or vending machines?background: late 20s, FE dev, small amount of savings, no debt

Ask HN: Blockchainshttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=10032099More and more noise seems to be appearing about blockchains. I see the small benefit of use in transactions between organisations, but am struggling for the case for private blockchains and some points of cryptocurrency in general. I don’t know if this is the best place to ask, but everything online is full of jargon and is inaccessible to me.I have a few questions:- What are the benefits of using a private blockchain (should I be thinking of it as a replacement to a General Ledger?)? Is this just another name for a ledger with auditable history?- Can a blockchain exist without mining or without a currency/coin? Will all private blockchains need a “coin”? (eg the Goldman Sachs coin or ABC plumbing coin?)And another couple of broader questions- What keeps people interested in a blockchain (and currency) once all of the easy mining is done eg, for people joining later?- I see that transaction costs for bitcoin keep rising, is that related to the size of the blockchain?- I thought bitcoin

Show HN: Minimalist HN reader with material designhttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=9755681Hello everyone!, this is a app I have being working on recently. I know there are number of HN readers on android. But couldn't find a one suitable for daily use. So I started developing this app. News articles, comments open in default browser of the device. Click on title of the item to open the article and anywhere else to open comments. Pull down to refresh. Swipe left and right to change the tabs. This is only the first phase of application. Lot of functions yet to be implement (you can read more in Google play listing). Before developing further I would love to have some feedback. BTW I'm a CS undergraduate.Thank you.Image :http://www.kasungamlath.com/assets/hnyc_framed.png Application :https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kasungamlath.hackernewsAny feedback is appreciated, thanks!

Patriot Act Section Goes Way Too Farhttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=9628531Via: http://www.cincinnati.com/story/opinion/letters/2015/05/29/letter-patriotact-sunset-senate-spying/28185561/"Section 215 of the Patriot Act is scheduled to sunset on Monday. This law was secretly interpreted to allow the mass surveillance of who you talk to on the phone. Such information can be deeply intimate and private: Consider, for instance, what you could infer from a record of numerous calls to a local oncology center and pharmacies. Section 215 is a pointless, expensive intrusion into the private life of every American. On May 22, the Senate voted against extending Section 215. Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky has indicated he will bring it up again for a lastminute vote on Sunday. I write to encourage local readers to ask their senators, especially McConnell and Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio, not to extend these surveillance provisions because they run counter to the spirit and letter of the Constitution. Your say: Submit a letter to the editor (http://static.cincinnati.com/le
