(Stock Investors) A free app pushing you financial market updates?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=42544169Dear Investors,I’ve been looking for a free app that delivers frequent 24/7 real-time push notifications about the financial market, but I’ve only found old-school financial news apps like Bloomberg, MarketWatch, etc. These apps often require paid memberships and take a lot of time to sift through for key insights. So, I came up with the idea of an app that summarizes the latest financial updates (even from sources that require paid memberships) and market trends. This app would deliver concise, frequent updates straight to your phone through push notifications. It is still an idea only, and this is not not form of promotion, but more of survey here. Here’s what it would cover: * Central bank decisions and updates; * Analysis of financial reports for popular stocks; * Important announcements and market sentiment; * Major index movements and other key trends; and * Much more to based on investors' needs and users' feedback. My goal is to make staying informed about the market easy and effiDec 29, 2024 10:46 PM

Why AI Needs to Pull Its Head Out of Its Ass and Get Bret Victor-Level Controlshttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=42536727Let’s get real: AI sucks at editing. Sure, it can spit out rough drafts—cool faces, surreal landscapes, or random game ideas—but when you try to refine that output? Forget it. You’re left yelling at the screen, “No, AI, I said tweak the lighting, not turn my Roman villa into a goddamn UFO hangar!”This is a problem. A big, hairy problem. If AI can’t do high-fidelity editing, it’s not a tool—it’s a toy. What we need are controls that give us real power over the details, like sliders, dials, and live previews. We need Bret Victor-level genius design to take AI from half-baked gimmick to something useful.AI Can’t Handle Nuance Here’s the thing: AI can generate stuff. But the second you try to make a specific change—like, “Make this face look more Emily Blunt and less John de Lancie”—it completely craps the bed. Why? Because that kind of adjustment isn’t simple. It’s about tweaking hundreds of tiny details: bone structure, skin texture, eye shape, expression, all working together. AI doesn’tDec 29, 2024 1:52 AM

Show HN: Minimalist, text only search engine with prefixes to play withhttps://github.com/Protyasha-Roy/kolpI made this classic looking text only search engine(sorry if that's overexaggerating) where you can get concise and straightforward results with sources. There are 5 prefixes right now.It is a prototype kinda thing right now. I am busy for my upcoming exams. So, I would appreciate if anyone is interested to contribute.I am currently using Gemini for this project. If anyone can implement better api's and improve code and the features it would be great help. It's generating fake source links right now, the search is slow, prefixes like weather and time needs to be fixed using api's related to weather and time cause gemini can't give the current time and weather of any place. Pdf resources its giving are fake and do not exist.Let me know what more I can add here. Or directly contribute by yourself.Dec 24, 2024 7:26 PM

A data strategy is essential for generative AI appshttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=42434555Hey everyone! Eric from Firecrawl here (YC S22), I wanted to share some takeaways from building AI chat products for enterprises at Mendable!A year ago, Generative AI powered search seemed like the perfect quick win for companies taking their first steps with AI.After building AI search for companies like MongoDB, Coinbase, and Snap at Mendable, we learned the nuances that make the difference between a demo and a production-ready system that actually drives value. Before we came in, almost every company had a few engineers creating prototypes yet most of which fell short following contact with real users. It all comes back to a simple truth: the system is only as good as the data going in.As you scale, here’s why the simple approaches break:- Context crowding: Correct context for a given query gets crowded out by bad context. Take the Snap AR docs for example, they have 4 different products on their developer documentation website and they all have getting started pages. If a user asks aDec 16, 2024 7:41 PM

Ask HN: Is it perfectly legal for Google to modify a user's android settings?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=42418060After being presented with an insurmountable 'agreement wall' for the Messages app (demanding I associate an account that was already associated), I forced the app to stop and uninstalled the update, which I suspect is RCS related. This allowed me to continue using Messages without succumbing to the new agreement. But every other day or so, it would occur again and I'd do the same.Realizing that I couldn't be uninstalling this many updates, I checked Play Services and found 'my' settings had been altered to Auto Update - something I always explicitly deactivate with no exceptions. I don't want disruptive updates or stupid apps, at least half or more of which are unused, unwanted and non-removable. Unfortunately, the many such apps had now been auto updated. There's no reason to pedantically remind me of encyclopedic user agreements and voluminous terms. I know. But is there any recourse in fighting this, beyond not using Android?Regardless of technicalities, it's intrusive and plain wroDec 14, 2024 4:39 PM

Show HN: PlayWord – Turn test cases into automated, executable testshttps://github.com/Foreverskyin0216/playwordHi HN, Steve here! I'd love to share my recent side project: PlayWord – a tool that makes web automation testing simpler and more intuitive. It converts your natural language test steps into actual, executable actions on the web page. For example, here's a test case I've written: go to {TARGET_URL} input {USERNAME} in the username field input the password {PASSWORD} log in verify if the URL matches {TARGET_URL}/inventory.html Readable, right? Now imagine it running as an automated test--that's exactly what PlayWord makes possible!Features:1. Describe test steps in natural language and say goodbye to annoying element locating.2. Support recording: record test steps to create reusable automated tests.3. Support screenshot reference: enhance AI understanding to better meet your needs.4. Provide CLI and modular options: run PlayWord via CLI or integrate it into your codebase.Check it out: https://github.com/Foreverskyin0216/playwordI'd love to hear your thoughts and feedback. Show HN: I combined customer support and customer success tools for PLG SaaShttps://clickconnector.com/I’m an indie hacker who previously built a customer communication platform specifically for travel agencies.Initially, I couldn’t rely on existing live chat software to support my product because it already included a built-in live chat feature (even though it was meant for travel agencies at first).Over time, I started building tools to solve my own problems. Every weekend, I’d hack together a new feature—not just to make my product better, but also to scratch that coding itch (yeah, I know, classic indie hacker move). What started as small experiments snowballed into building KnowledgeBase Portals, Feature Request Boards, Bug Report Boards, Changelogs, Email Drip Campaigns, Product Tours, Checklists, NPS tools, and more. The funny part? Travel agencies didn’t really care about all these extra tools—they didn’t need them. I was the only user who actually used everything I built. For the past few weeks, I’ve been reworking the positioning of my product—shifting from targeting travel agenDec 13, 2024 8:52 AM
