Show HN: A minimalist net worth tracker for individualshttps://getflow.finance/Hi HN,Today I'm launching the Net Worth Tracker by Flow Finance, a beautiful and minimalist Excel template that allows individuals to track their assets, liabilities, income, and spending on a monthly basis. The focus of this template is understanding long-term trends in the incoming and outgoing expenses for an individual—always with a focus on maximising insights while minimising user inputs. This project was created because the alternatives, frankly, are completely overwhelming. A friend of mine introduced me to the FIRE Movement and, after doing deep dives through Reddit, I tried to find templates to help facilitate a financial tracking system of my own. Every template felt like complete overkill: portfolio tracking for shares, mortgage repayment calculators, even a kind of speedometer which moved depending on my savings rate. Clever, no doubt, but unnecessary for my purposes. After years of tinkering and refining what I truly wanted out of this spreadsheet, I realised it was to clea

Show HN: Dabdab – Streaming Noteshttps://dabdab.org/Hi! I'd like to present a project I've been working on lately to make an app to record thought process the way it fits me.I think current note taking solutions are a poor fit for the cases where you just want do dump your thoughts on a topic quickly or where time when a note has been taken actually matters or in cases like science where you want to keep a log of actions to be able to troubleshoot or reproduce your experimentI've built my own thing - dabdab.org. You can think of it as a baby of twitter and google keep of sorts but without all social features of twitter. The base concept is a stream of messages, streams can be nested and have additional fields defined, you can make things public if you want to, but it's decided per stream and you can even share by link. It's useful for all kinds of observations and data recording. I've been using it for the last two months and it works great for me.For example I have streams to store quotes from books with my comments on them, do a quick

Ask HN: Time to Leave the US?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=35364718It feels like the US has passed a tipping point of sorts and is rapidly moving the wrong way on a lot of important issues.Biggest / most glaring being the out-of-control gun violence, esp. in our schools. That's simply unacceptable to me as a parent of two toddlers under the age of 2.Medical / Cost of a significant illness is really Fd up in this country. I had a kidney stone last year, and it cost me over 5k. Most of my friends / family would not have been able to absorb that surprise expense and would have had to use credit cards. That's not even much cash compared to what medical bills in the US can easily cost you. Families are being financially ruined by this shit.Lastly would be random, non-school violence. My wife is Asian and the increase in random asshats assaulting smaller, weaker people – esp Asian women – is just the latest WTF is going on in this country. When I step back, it seems inevitable that someone close to me will suffer from one of the 3, or possible more than 1 of

Launch HN: Metal (YC W23) – Embeddings as a Servicehttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=35341514Hey HN! We’re Taylor, James and Sergio – the founders of Metal (https://www.getmetal.io/). You can think of Metal as embeddings as a service. We help developers use embeddings without needing to build out infrastructure, storage, or tooling. Here’s a 2-minute overview: https://www.loom.com/share/39fb6df7fd73469eaf20b37248ceed0fIf you’re unfamiliar with embeddings, they are representations of real world data expressed as a vector, where the position of the vector can be compared to other vectors – thereby deriving meaning from the data. They can be used to create things like semantic search, recommender systems, clustering analysis, classification, and more.Working at companies like Datadog, Meta, and Spotify, we found it frustrating to build ML apps. Lack of tooling, infrastructure, and proper abstraction made working with ML tedious and slow. To get features out the door we’ve had to build data ingestion pipelines from scratch, manually maintain live customer datasets, build observabi

Show HN: Learn Languages When Watching Videos with Easehttps://intersub.ccI'd like to tell you about InterSub, a tool that I've been developing out of my pain of learning languages.I found watching videos the best working option for me because it allows me to advance in language almost without spending extra time. I watch videos - series, TV shows, documentaries etc. not less an hour a day and switching on watching in the learned language gave me an extra hour of practice. I wasn't satisfied with solutions which I'd found on the market, and I decided to make a better one. With InterSub, one can watch videos on your favorite platforms like YouTube, Netflix, Coursera and so on (soon), get instant translations of any unknown words or phrases in subtitles altogether with their context, have them automatically saved in a personal vocabulary and learn later in a fav mobile app. We designed InterSub to save one's time and energy, so a user can focus on mastering the language. We'd love to hear your thoughts and feedback on how we can make the tool even better.

JUICE arrives in French Guiana for launch, project manager outlines next stepshttps://www.nasaspaceflight.com/2023/03/juice-csg-arrival/Set for launch from the Centre Spatial Guyanais (CSG) in Kourou, French Guiana, on April 13, 2023, the European Space Agency’s (ESA’s) Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (JUICE) mission will aim to uncover the secrets of Jupiter’s three largest icy moons: Ganymede, Callisto, and Europa. JUICE’s suite of instruments will allow scientists to thoroughly explore and characterize the moons, each of which is thought to feature large bodies of liquid water beneath their surfaces — creating potentially habitable environments for life.

Novel Prompt Injection Threats to Application-Integrated Large Language Modelshttps://arxiv.org/abs/2302.12173Title: More than you've asked for: A Comprehensive Analysis of Novel Prompt Injection Threats to Application-Integrated Large Language ModelsAbstract: We are currently witnessing dramatic advances in the capabilities of Large Language Models (LLMs). They are already being adopted in practice and integrated into many systems, including integrated development environments (IDEs) and search engines. The functionalities of current LLMs can be modulated via natural language prompts, while their exact internal functionality remains implicit and unassessable. This property, which makes them adaptable to even unseen tasks, might also make them susceptible to targeted adversarial prompting. Recently, several ways to misalign LLMs using Prompt Injection (PI) attacks have been introduced. In such attacks, an adversary can prompt the LLM to produce malicious content or override the original instructions and the employed filtering schemes. Recent work showed that these attacks are hard to mitigate,

Ask HN: Shift from Product to Data Engineeringhttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=34899305TL:DR I have a PhD, 8 years experience in tech PMing. Interested in exploring a change to data engineering...asking advice:1- sources to learn2- does my background help or hurt?3- best way to break in4- any "career therapy" sources--I have a PhD in chemistry and fell into PMing 8 years ago. I have touched a lot of technologies and dealt with embedded systems, consumer tech, SaaS and, of course, data analysis totally out of my field and comfort zone.My current company is good enough on the surface- good package, cool clients, cool tech. It does suffer from key drawbacks - nepotism, micromanagement, silos, total lack of strategic awareness. The result being old-timers rule the roost and even though we're 500 employees it's still managed like a 15-body startup. Turn over is high - senior hires tend to leave in a hurry (1-3 years). I was brought in to help with one of the main product lines. The idea of the hiring manager to get a senior with outside experience to scale. The hiring manager
