Snowden leaks US giving Israel private information on Americanshttp://www.jpost.com/International/Report-Israel-receives-intelligence-from-US-containing-private-information-on-US-citizens-325871"This headline plays down the biggest part of this story: The NSA has programs that collect data on US Supreme Court Justices and elected officials, and they secretly provide it to Israel regulated only by an honor system."

HIRING/RECRUITNG: Software Geniushttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=6230913Look, we are a growing consulting and product firm. We are looking for a person that can take our founder's (my) architect role and help make the company succeed while I am out whoring/selling us as needed. We build some awesome products, focused on mostly the e-commerce and big-data space. Far more on really hard big-data than anything, but e-commerce interests us as a unique opportunity. We have an amazing group of people in Florida. Of which we have one person that could step into this role, frankly you would likely compete with them, but in a positive way. But because we aren't stupid, it seems logical to look at people smarter than ourselves. If you have interest, we want to talk. We aren't funded, we are bootstrapped. Which frankly means there is an opportunity that is usually unfounded. We are looking at Angles over the next 6-9 months, but frankly want to see if we can make it without them. Not because they are bad, but because we believe in our team and that our team should win

Tools to monitor website performance?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=6068848Hi,I'm curious what the current state-of-art for website performance monitoring is?Most of the tools I've seen are either Pingdom-style applications, which simply tell you if a website if up or down, or they're like YSlow-style, which run a bunch of tests to see if you're following best practices. But is there something like say, Chrome's SpeedTracer that you could run as a service, and monitor your website's performance over time? Or before/after each commit? What would you guys recommend to track the performance of your own website over time, or gather deep-level metrics?Could you use something like PhantomJS to achieve this? Are there any existing open-source projects that already do this?Cheers , Victor

Ask HN: Pre-hackathon jittershttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5631622I'm signed up to go to my first hackathon in Nashville (www.hacknashville.com) this weekend, which I heard about through the Memphis python user group (someone posted it in the google group, though it looks like no one from that group is going). I don't expect to know anyone at the event, have no job, development, or relevant projects to show off, and am a little self-conscious about whether I'll feel really out of place and outpaced. I do have a CS degree and think I'm decent at Python, have a pretty wide (but not necessarily deep) knowledge of other languages, tools, and frameworks, and am generally pretty personable, but am having second thoughts about going. The event is 'sold' out (it was free, but all the registration spots are full) and there is a waitlist for cancellations, so I should probably let them know ASAP if I'm not going to make it.Does anyone have any thoughts or words to put me at ease? Or would you suggest giving up the spot to someone better qualified? My goals for

Ask HN: Anyone else seeing Gmail's "Display density: Compact" not working?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5383558TL;DR: Gmail theme "Orcas Island" is borked. Any others?(Maybe I should have tried harder to squeeze "theme Orcas Island" into the title...)--Yes, this is using HN as "Google customer support", but what other option do I have?In Gmail's web client, I use the theme "Orcas Island" for a more pleasant experience. (Not only do I like the pictures; it also changes the background from white to a less bright gray-blue.)Today, in that theme, "Display density: Compact" is no longer working. Whitespace galore.I noticed some other Gmail changes, e.g. the prompt to confirm mobile phone number (for security notifications). So, maybe the same push broke this aspect of theming? So far, I've only noticed this affecting the theme "Orcas Island". (But, I'm not going to check them all...)Googling has revealed nothing on this.

Seabiscuit and "The money problem"https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4158975Hello world!I'm not exactly sure the right way to approach this, I've never been much for doing things in an orthodox way, so I'll just be straightforward about it. I need to find an investor.I believe that I have all of the necessary ingredients to be successful at what I'm trying to accomplish, but I realize that I need others to believe in me to help me to achieve my potential; few people ever get there alone.I hear prominent figures say that they invest in the people more than the ideas and I wonder how true that is. Do you care more about me or my actual startup? In this case I think both are awesome, so maybe it's your lucky day (or mine). So, yes, I've got a startup. That's a lie, I've got two startups, but one is my baby. We'll get back to that later, for now I want to talk about who I am and why I am writing this.Maybe I suffer from the Dunning–Kruger effect, but I think I might be just the right mix of crazy, creative, and calculated to accomplish something fairly impressive.I

PSN automatically "roots" your Facebook, no permission granted.https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=3691286I have been meaning to link up my modern warfare 3 account with facebook (new feature) so I could see which of my facebook friends play. Today I finally did it and paid very close attention to the permission I was granting to the game. Call of duty asks for permission to access all your basic info, view your photos, and post to your wall. A bit hefty, but I wanted to see who else was playing modern warfare 3 so I agreed. I was logged in, and when I went to my friends list i was informed it found no results so was pretty much pointless. Immediately I checked my account settings on facebook thinking I would just remove access and forget about the whole thing. I was not so shocked to find that call of duty had allowed itself more access than it asked for. I WAS however shocked that there was another app allowed in the last 24 hours called 'Playstation Network' and it had a pagelong list of access permissions all of which were completely open and I had never been asked to allow that. (I'm

Ask HN: Review my idea - Hosting SEOhttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=3690713Background: This idea was borne out of an internal tool I created to figure out and validate SEO strategies for websites I own. I figure since it works for me, I could try and sell this to a different industry/niche - in this case 'hosting'. This tool currently does not have an UI - I run sql queries directly on the mysql server to get my information. I have created a mockup UI to show how I expect it to work.UI for explaining the app functionality - http://axemantech.com/HostingSEO/Pain point it solves: Currently there are many seo apps that show serp rankings, on page and off page seo stats but seting up the system is generally painful. I dislike having to add keywords for my website, add data for my competitors, etc. This generally happens because these SEO apps are generic. How to solve this: Since this app focuses on a specific niche, it will already be setup with all the potential keywords for the niche (and will continously add new ones). All the data that the customers (people p

Ask HN: Does explaining your program's complete design reduce sales?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=3674312I'm working on my very first Android application; and, I've been considering talking through the different parts of my design; and how and where my code is growing organically to support the different ideas that I have.Since I'd basically be explaining every feature and design decision I make from here on out, this leads me to a question. Would I lose sales from my application? I'm very interested in selling it.It's an active wallpaper that plays the Game of Life. I know the market already has one, but I was going to be adding more features to it that would make it more interesting and perhaps a good wallpaper.
