Show HN: Public transportation signage based on bloom filters (rough mockup)https://github.com/jsvan/BusStopBloomfilterHello, I was running around Germany, hectically navigating public transportation, and getting lost all the time. I noticed that every station had i platforms, each used lists of n buses (trains, whatever) arriving, each has their list of m destinations. That means I would be scanning i x n x m items just to see if I was at the correct stop. As I was nervous, for every bus that arrived, I would rescan the list of stops to double check. I began thinking how I could make a better system.Linked is a very shoddy mockup of how bloom filters could be used to allow passengers O(1) lookup time for which platform+bus is the correct one. I believe it's likely for public transportation to grow increasingly more complex in the future, as population grows, and under the current list-based system, this will make the signage ever more complex. I think some bloom filter mechanism could reduce that complexity. So, here is my fantasy, my day dream. What do you think?Mar 21, 2023 4:50 PM

Show HN: Learn Languages When Watching Videos with Easehttps://intersub.ccI'd like to tell you about InterSub, a tool that I've been developing out of my pain of learning languages.I found watching videos the best working option for me because it allows me to advance in language almost without spending extra time. I watch videos - series, TV shows, documentaries etc. not less an hour a day and switching on watching in the learned language gave me an extra hour of practice. I wasn't satisfied with solutions which I'd found on the market, and I decided to make a better one. With InterSub, one can watch videos on your favorite platforms like YouTube, Netflix, Coursera and so on (soon), get instant translations of any unknown words or phrases in subtitles altogether with their context, have them automatically saved in a personal vocabulary and learn later in a fav mobile app. We designed InterSub to save one's time and energy, so a user can focus on mastering the language. We'd love to hear your thoughts and feedback on how we can make the tool even better.Mar 21, 2023 1:16 PM

How we built a social network with No-Codehttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=35070143In the Fall of last year, we launched a social network for college students with No-Code.Here’s how we did it:Last summer (after having conversations with a few dozen college students), we stumbled across a very interesting insight:*80% of college students aren’t on Facebook anymore*.Sure, tools like Snapchat and Instagram exist that represent someone’s social graph, but there isn’t a central place for students to go get guidance from other peers. For students to even do simple transactions like exchanging textbooks, finding roommates, or buying sports tickets is messy. This gave us the idea that just maybe students were hungry for a new social network to fill the void Facebook left behind. Our goal was to create a digital community where students could discuss campus life, discover housing options, and buy/sell from other students.### Step 1: Build the PlatformTo make this happen, we started by setting up a (Circle)[https://circle.so/] community specifically for our first college, the UMar 8, 2023 3:27 PM

Ask HN: Shift from Product to Data Engineeringhttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=34899305TL:DR I have a PhD, 8 years experience in tech PMing. Interested in exploring a change to data engineering...asking advice:1- sources to learn2- does my background help or hurt?3- best way to break in4- any "career therapy" sources--I have a PhD in chemistry and fell into PMing 8 years ago. I have touched a lot of technologies and dealt with embedded systems, consumer tech, SaaS and, of course, data analysis totally out of my field and comfort zone.My current company is good enough on the surface- good package, cool clients, cool tech. It does suffer from key drawbacks - nepotism, micromanagement, silos, total lack of strategic awareness. The result being old-timers rule the roost and even though we're 500 employees it's still managed like a 15-body startup. Turn over is high - senior hires tend to leave in a hurry (1-3 years). I was brought in to help with one of the main product lines. The idea of the hiring manager to get a senior with outside experience to scale. The hiring managerFeb 22, 2023 5:34 PM

Show HN: Contactless Testdrive Plaformhttps://twinzok.com/Hello,while selling a car, I had to make a lot of time to schedule all the test drives for people interested in my offering. This is not easy with a full time job!So I heard that in Singapore, Hyundai made a trial platform that allows users to test drive vehicles in a contactless manner, including keyless entry via web API and more.Since I could not find a replica of such a service in my country, I set out to do my own version and hence my platform twinzok.com was born.It allows people to list their vehicle and offer test drives and viewings at any time. Only people that have a verified license can drive. Just like online rental services. This solves my time problem as I do not have to be present during the viewings and drives anymore.Right now the service is a in trial phase but the main components are working.I wanted to know what you think of this idea and whether you see any use in it.Thank you for your attention!Feb 1, 2023 1:57 PM

Tell HN: From bartending to managing cloud infrastructurehttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=34460997Someone on HN once recommended I share this story, and I've been seeing a lot of "how do I get into tech in my 30s" and "can I switch careers" posts, so I figured I'd post.----I'm 37. I spent my twenties bouncing all over the place; did a stint in the Army Reserves while shooting for liutenant bars that didn't work out (failed out of college and I was in ROTC). Did construction, real estate, grew weed in Denver for a year (legally), ended up bartending for roughly a decade. It was great in my early 20s. Not so hot to watch my age group get raises and salary increases.I have my GED and never finished college - left with a record-setting 1.2 GPA (I have severe ADD and I wasn't properly medicated, there were other problems too). Seemed like there was this universe of 'good jobs' that were simply not in the cards. So there I am, in my early 30s, struggling to make NY rent and watching folks get promoted and getting married and buying houses and all that stuff. I was lucky enough to have friJan 20, 2023 10:30 PM
