I always had dreams for a "bigger" application, where I could follow some people and read what they have to post, or specific topics and get notified with they show up, and if you don't want email, you can just have it sent to an RSS feed, or install it as a PWA and get the option for push notifications. Don't want immediate updates, change them to daily/weekly/monthly digest emails instead.The old HN Notify got shut down because it was getting to be too much work to maintain my sloppy code when I had other hobbies to play with.
