Launch HN: QuestDB (YC S20) – Fast open source time series databasehttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=23975807Hey everyone, I’m Vlad and I co-founded QuestDB (https://questdb.io) with Nic and Tanc. QuestDB is an open source database for time series, events, and analytical workloads with a primary focus on performance (https://github.com/questdb/questdb).It started in 2012 when an energy trading company hired me to rebuild their real-time vessel tracking system. Management wanted me to use a well-known XML database that they had just bought a license for. This option would have required to take down production for about a week just to ingest the data. And a week downtime was not an option. With no more money to spend on software, I turned to alternatives such as OpenTSDB but they were not a fit for our data model. There was no solution in sight to deliver the project. Then, I stumbled upon Peter Lawrey’s Java Chronicle library [1]. It loaded the same data in 2 minutes instead of a week using memory-mapped files. Besides the performance aspect, I found it fascinating that such a simple method was

High School Fizzle Syndrome – Predicting Future Successhttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=21910408Given the high number of accomplished people on HN, I'm curious about the phenomenon that some people call "High School Fizzle Syndrome" -- when former high school superstars fade into the background in their adult life. In this case I'm referring more specifically to the academic superstars rather than, say, athletic superstars. At my high school there were a large number of academic superstars. These were people who routinely placed first in national and international competitions, were class presidents, had perfect GPA's and standardized test scores, were Rhodes Scholars, and went on to gain admission to coveted colleges like Harvard/Yale/Stanford/MIT. The fierce competition was encouraged by teachers and parents alike. The superstar students complied with the demand -- these were highly motivated, extremely hardworking and talented individuals. The consensus was that, as a result of their early impressive achievements, they were destined for great things later in life.In hindsight,

Launch HN: Stir – Government Procurement as a Servicehttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=21381411Hey HN!I'm Jay Nath, founder of STIR (https://www.cityinnovate.com).STIR is a digital platform that connects the world’s most innovative tech companies with governments to solve challenges over 16 weeks. At the end of the 16 weeks governments can choose to go into contract with the startups (nearly 80% get a contract). Our key innovation is streamlining govt procurement by 10X: govts can issue an RFP in days vs months/yrs and startups can respond in hours vs days/weeks of effort.I created STIR when I worked for the Mayor of San Francisco to help close the innovation gap between cities and private-sector. It never ceased to amaze me how many of workflows and services were paper-based or put together using a MS Access database and yet we're surrounded by so much tech talent. My vision was to help catalyze the growth of the govtech ecosystem by creating startup-friendly contract opportunities. Something that was really important to me was ensuring that governments articulated their pain po

Ask HN: Bonding Internet Connectionshttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=20580811Hi Guys - I'm based in Australia and have slow ADSL2+ (4Mb/1Mb down/up). I live semi rural so have limited to no mobile reception. I can get 'skymuster' which is a satellite connection that should provide about 20Mb down. That said I've has mixed reviews like it 1) stops working in heavy rain plus 2) accounts are limited to 200bg and I probably use double that in a month and 3) I run my mobile calls over wifi so worried about the latency of satellite only.I’ve started looking at signing up to both services to get the best of both and bonding these 2 connections. The solution to bond connections that keeps showing up is Speedify. There doesn’t seem to be a huge amount of options for a non-technical person like me. I'm wondering if people have any recommendations on the best way to bond 2 internet connections?

Ask HN: What makes a GREAT hackathon?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=18239793I'm helping organize the next hackathon where I work. We have something like 30-50 people participating across technical frontend and backend teams, including UIUX folks, PMs and others.Typically our hackathons are 3 days long and are self-organized in to teams who go for various bounties. Anyone can suggest a bounty which might come with a trophy and maybe a gift card. Typically - but not exclusively - the hacks have been work related. We usually have a food challenge too during the event. Last time it was "who could eat the most pirogies" (the winner ate 100 over 3 days :-) ). We have a show & tell event at the end and open voting on the winners. We're open to changing things up!What have you seen (timing, tasks, organizationally or anything else) that works well or poorly in a hackathon? Thanks HN!

Show HN: Tok'n'talk – Conversations using your ERC20/ERC71 tokenshttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=17957933Hi, we've created an app https://tokntalk.club/ to experiment with using tokens ERC20 and ERC721 in slightly different way than monetary use cases you're familiar with.ERC20 - They are treated as memberships in 'token clubs'. If you have given ERC20 token you can write messages in its dedicated club. eg. Maker MRK club https://tokntalk.club/clubs/MKR or in Berlin Coin BRLN club https://tokntalk.club/clubs/ethereum:0x80046305aaab08f6033b5...ERC721 - Those tokens can be used as avatars. To give you ability to change 'personalities', create their history and grow them as recognizable characters. We are supporting ~40 different kinds of ERC721s and we're always looking to integrate new ones. Now, you might be asking: Why?The reason is simple. We believe that this is the only way for blockchain community to go forward. Communication based on signed messages is crucial for progress but it's not enough. We need filters rooted in the very base of our beliefs. Filters that will help guard our at

Ask HN: Why is hackernews so old-fashioned?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=17412237As a web developer, it's always seemed strange to me that a tech incubator would have such an old-fashioned website. It's nice in some respects - pages load extremely quickly and the layout is compact and to-the-point. I was starting to think it was just minimalist by choice and not actually outdated, but then someone mentioned that async requests are done through an tag instead of ajax, so now I'm wondering what the story is there?Has it just been left alone because it's not broken? Or because they're worried people would get upset about changes? Or for maximum backward-compatibility? I'm not complaining; I'm just really curious.
