Show HN: Tok'n'talk – Conversations using your ERC20/ERC71 tokenshttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=17957933Hi, we've created an app https://tokntalk.club/ to experiment with using tokens ERC20 and ERC721 in slightly different way than monetary use cases you're familiar with.ERC20 - They are treated as memberships in 'token clubs'. If you have given ERC20 token you can write messages in its dedicated club. eg. Maker MRK club https://tokntalk.club/clubs/MKR or in Berlin Coin BRLN club https://tokntalk.club/clubs/ethereum:0x80046305aaab08f6033b5...ERC721 - Those tokens can be used as avatars. To give you ability to change 'personalities', create their history and grow them as recognizable characters. We are supporting ~40 different kinds of ERC721s and we're always looking to integrate new ones. Now, you might be asking: Why?The reason is simple. We believe that this is the only way for blockchain community to go forward. Communication based on signed messages is crucial for progress but it's not enough. We need filters rooted in the very base of our beliefs. Filters that will help guard our at

Ask HN: Why is hackernews so old-fashioned?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=17412237As a web developer, it's always seemed strange to me that a tech incubator would have such an old-fashioned website. It's nice in some respects - pages load extremely quickly and the layout is compact and to-the-point. I was starting to think it was just minimalist by choice and not actually outdated, but then someone mentioned that async requests are done through an tag instead of ajax, so now I'm wondering what the story is there?Has it just been left alone because it's not broken? Or because they're worried people would get upset about changes? Or for maximum backward-compatibility? I'm not complaining; I'm just really curious.

Ask HN: How do I get into bioinformatics as a CS student?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=16275367Dear HN,I am a 20-year-old university student majoring in computer science and minoring in mathematics with the intent of finding a way to build a career around data science and computational intelligence. Recently, I've started gravitating towards bioinformatics because it seems like the sort of work that appeals to me. I like working on hard problems whose ideal approach isn't well established and the idea of working with data related to the fabric of life itself seems like it motivate me to get out of bed every morning and look forward to what I do every day. However, I have at best an American-high-school-level of understanding biology. I remember the basics: cell anatomy, the DNA transcription process, basic biochemical pathways, and basic human anatomy. How do I build upon my current knowledge of biology so that I can be a strong contender for a role as a data scientist at a biotech company or at a research lab in the next 5 or so years?Specifically, I would like to find a job whe

What should I do to increase my chances of getting a comp sci job?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=15008023Hi, I am currently studying towards a degree in computer science (also minoring in stats and biochem). I'm a bit worried about finding a job in the future as the industry is really competitive. I would like to get a job in data science, but I'm keeping my options open.I know when applying for jobs I should definitely have a portfolio for my own personal projects. I plan on doing that this summer, but I'm just not sure how complex my programming project should be or how many individual projects I should have. Also, I'm not sure if I should focus on planning and programming my personal projects or if I should focus on other extracurriculars to build up my CV or resume; should I also volunteer, tutor students, and join university clubs/programs? Should I try and win various "leadership" awards and scholarships? I think I will try to do both but do you think I should really focus on one thing rather than the other? What do you think employers prefer? Also what were your experiences when app

Ask HN: Software- Better to focus on or complement with?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=13858596From your experience, what advantages/disadvantages are there to: 1) Majoring in electrical engineering and physics, minoring in software development 2) Majoring in software engineering, minoring in electrically engineering and physicsContext: I'm a first year engineering student and would like to pick either Software Engineering (electrical engineering with computer science) or Engineering Physics (electrical engineering with physics). I already have a couple years experience programming, really enjoy it, and is why I went into the program. But, I've also really enjoyed physics and math classes and they've given me a strong desire to learn more about physics. Intuitively, I think that having a strong physics background opens the door to more problems I could solve with software. However, I don't want to to discount the value of studying software engineering. I don't have the experience to see what kind of walls and limitations each choice offers. What have you seen?

Ask HN: How do you diversify your income?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=11407888As I get older, I'm trying to focus less on absolute financial independence than a sort of income redundancy, where I have enough sources of revenue to sustain my barest expenses in case something goes wrong. My dream: four or five streams, requiring different levels of investment and labor, but generally clocking in under 40 hours and, to the point where I could lose one or face a serious cutback in two, and never be in jeopardy.I know this overlaps with the passive income obsession, so I'm excited to hear HN's thoughts, but I'm concerned less with overall effort than reducing the risk tied to my income coming solely from my job.I'm super interested to hear if any HN'ers have tried to diversify their income outside of tech, maybe through some small-ball physical investments like ATMs or vending machines?background: late 20s, FE dev, small amount of savings, no debt
