One afternoon, the grad students discovered they could scan the network for users who had accidentally left their .plan files world-writable. Because default security permissions were incredibly relaxed back then, you could sometimes write directly to someone else's file. The grad students wrote a script to append a snarky message mocking the users' permissions: "I AM FAR MOR THAN AN IGNORANT MORON..." Later that night, the lab cleared out. But let me fill you in...So, I pitch a lot these days, and "make the deck" had become the worst part of my week. I don't know about you, but automation hasn't really worked for me here. Every AI deck tool I tried failed the same way. After various trial and errors, it ends up being fine on screen, but a broken approximation on export, and not one of them would touch my company master. So I was thinking that perhaps the solution is to give AI a format that's just easier to handle - the XML is really bloated and complex, maybe Markdown & YAML would do better.So, I gave it a shot and it worked. It is called .slaide. It is basically a somewhat customized Markdown to match text with theme defined placeholders and a theme defined in YAML. The markdown has some custom elements for charts, svg, html, etc. to make it valid. All files are then packaged in a zip file (.slaidec). It renders to a web deck, a PDF and a .pptx.

I believe that whenever possible we should use the stuff we already own (like our Mac laptops, decent machines gathering dust, our gaming PC) and the limited electrical power we have easy access to, like the socket in the wall next to most of us. We shouldn't have to send our data to the cloud hoping some T&C will prevent it from being used in a way that we'd regret. Most of the local AI solutions are technical, involved, and land a curious body in some package hell. People are optimizing for one system and not another, the fun stuff is on PC if you own a Mac, and on Mac if you own a PC.So mere.run was my choice to begin to patch many of those things that I saw as problematic.
