Ask HN: Bonding Internet Connectionshttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=20580811Hi Guys - I'm based in Australia and have slow ADSL2+ (4Mb/1Mb down/up). I live semi rural so have limited to no mobile reception. I can get 'skymuster' which is a satellite connection that should provide about 20Mb down. That said I've has mixed reviews like it 1) stops working in heavy rain plus 2) accounts are limited to 200bg and I probably use double that in a month and 3) I run my mobile calls over wifi so worried about the latency of satellite only.I’ve started looking at signing up to both services to get the best of both and bonding these 2 connections. The solution to bond connections that keeps showing up is Speedify. There doesn’t seem to be a huge amount of options for a non-technical person like me. I'm wondering if people have any recommendations on the best way to bond 2 internet connections?Aug 1, 2019 3:11 AM

Show HN: Tok'n'talk – Conversations using your ERC20/ERC71 tokenshttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=17957933Hi, we've created an app https://tokntalk.club/ to experiment with using tokens ERC20 and ERC721 in slightly different way than monetary use cases you're familiar with.ERC20 - They are treated as memberships in 'token clubs'. If you have given ERC20 token you can write messages in its dedicated club. eg. Maker MRK club https://tokntalk.club/clubs/MKR or in Berlin Coin BRLN club https://tokntalk.club/clubs/ethereum:0x80046305aaab08f6033b5...ERC721 - Those tokens can be used as avatars. To give you ability to change 'personalities', create their history and grow them as recognizable characters. We are supporting ~40 different kinds of ERC721s and we're always looking to integrate new ones. Now, you might be asking: Why?The reason is simple. We believe that this is the only way for blockchain community to go forward. Communication based on signed messages is crucial for progress but it's not enough. We need filters rooted in the very base of our beliefs. Filters that will help guard our atSep 11, 2018 8:05 AM

Ask HN: Why is hackernews so old-fashioned?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=17412237As a web developer, it's always seemed strange to me that a tech incubator would have such an old-fashioned website. It's nice in some respects - pages load extremely quickly and the layout is compact and to-the-point. I was starting to think it was just minimalist by choice and not actually outdated, but then someone mentioned that async requests are done through an tag instead of ajax, so now I'm wondering what the story is there?Has it just been left alone because it's not broken? Or because they're worried people would get upset about changes? Or for maximum backward-compatibility? I'm not complaining; I'm just really curious.Jun 27, 2018 10:04 PM

Ask HN: How do you diversify your income?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=11407888As I get older, I'm trying to focus less on absolute financial independence than a sort of income redundancy, where I have enough sources of revenue to sustain my barest expenses in case something goes wrong. My dream: four or five streams, requiring different levels of investment and labor, but generally clocking in under 40 hours and, to the point where I could lose one or face a serious cutback in two, and never be in jeopardy.I know this overlaps with the passive income obsession, so I'm excited to hear HN's thoughts, but I'm concerned less with overall effort than reducing the risk tied to my income coming solely from my job.I'm super interested to hear if any HN'ers have tried to diversify their income outside of tech, maybe through some small-ball physical investments like ATMs or vending machines?background: late 20s, FE dev, small amount of savings, no debtApr 1, 2016 7:38 PM

Ask HN: Blockchainshttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=10032099More and more noise seems to be appearing about blockchains. I see the small benefit of use in transactions between organisations, but am struggling for the case for private blockchains and some points of cryptocurrency in general. I don’t know if this is the best place to ask, but everything online is full of jargon and is inaccessible to me.I have a few questions:- What are the benefits of using a private blockchain (should I be thinking of it as a replacement to a General Ledger?)? Is this just another name for a ledger with auditable history?- Can a blockchain exist without mining or without a currency/coin? Will all private blockchains need a “coin”? (eg the Goldman Sachs coin or ABC plumbing coin?)And another couple of broader questions- What keeps people interested in a blockchain (and currency) once all of the easy mining is done eg, for people joining later?- I see that transaction costs for bitcoin keep rising, is that related to the size of the blockchain?- I thought bitcoinAug 10, 2015 12:27 AM

Patriot Act Section Goes Way Too Farhttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=9628531Via: http://www.cincinnati.com/story/opinion/letters/2015/05/29/letter-patriotact-sunset-senate-spying/28185561/"Section 215 of the Patriot Act is scheduled to sunset on Monday. This law was secretly interpreted to allow the mass surveillance of who you talk to on the phone. Such information can be deeply intimate and private: Consider, for instance, what you could infer from a record of numerous calls to a local oncology center and pharmacies. Section 215 is a pointless, expensive intrusion into the private life of every American. On May 22, the Senate voted against extending Section 215. Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky has indicated he will bring it up again for a lastminute vote on Sunday. I write to encourage local readers to ask their senators, especially McConnell and Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio, not to extend these surveillance provisions because they run counter to the spirit and letter of the Constitution. Ask HN: Finding a technical lead in Cambridge, MA?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=8675900Over the last several months, I have tested and validated a business opportunity in the legal space. Customers are very interested - 4 or the last 5 have asked to be part of a paid Beta as soon as possible. I'd like to get something workable into customers hands as soon as possible, but am hamstrung by my technical skills.I'm by background and skillset much more business than technically oriented. I know enough Python/Django to be dangerous and have built a working proof-of-concept / demo. However, I know when I'm at the limit of my capabilities, and to take it from POC to working product, would like to bring on someone to help buildout a real product. Some of the problems that need to be solved for (many of which I've been dealing with in one capacity or another): - web scraping. Done mostly with BeautifulSoup to date + lots of custom regexes. There are a lot of corner cases to deal with. - regularly scraping 10,000s of pages and watching for changes on those pages - entity and person Nov 30, 2014 3:42 AM
