Launch HN: Hera (YC S21) – macOS app to prepare, join and take notes in meetingshttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=27771091Hi HN, we're Bruno and Louise, the founders of Hera (https://hera.so)! Over the past 5 months, we have built a MacOS desktop app to prepare, join, and run meetings without the grunt work. Basically, we try to help busy knowledge workers have good meetings without spending all day preparing or scrambling to find back that note in Apple Notes. We were our first users. As a PM, I was spending an unreasonable amount of time preparing user research interviews and kick-off meetings and sharing summaries to the team. A good 45-min meeting would effectively cost me about 2 hours of mental bandwidth. The private beta we launched 4 months ago helped us find good ways to attack the problem:Meetings are broken partly because they are seen as isolated entities in calendar and note-taking tools. We want to make each meeting live next to other related meetings. Kind of like a thread of emails, but for your meetings (think of your weekly product meeting or one-on-one).There is a missed opportunity to a

Launch HN: Evidently AI (YC S21) – Track and Debug ML Models in Productionhttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=27760627Hi HN, we are Elena and Emeli, co-founders of Evidently AI http://evidentlyai.com. We're building monitoring for machine learning models in production. The tool is open source and available on GitHub: https://github.com/evidentlyai/evidently. You can use it locally in a Jupyter notebook or in a Bash shell. There’s a video showing how it works in Jupyter here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NPtTKYxm524.Machine learning models can stop working as expected, often for non-obvious reasons. If this happens to a marketing personalization model, you might spam your customers by mistake. If this happens to credit scoring models, you might face legal and reputational risks. And so on. To catch issues with the model, it is not enough to just look at service metrics like latency. You have to track data quality, data drift (did the inputs change too much?), underperforming segments (does the model fail only for users in a certain region?), model metrics (accuracy, ROC AUC, mean error, etc.), and s

Doing a Doing masters in Math or CS when I don't have a good GPA?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=27734654I am entering my 4th year of university doing a Major in Math and minoring in CS. I came to uni to try to get a Major in CS but there was a grade cutoff and I didn't make the cut. Luckily I was able to get the Math Major and have been doing it till now. My GPA hasn't improved however, and I am sitting close to a 2.0. I will graduate but with such a GPA, is grad school even worth thinking about? I would like to do something in CS more. But Math wouldn't be bad either... Any thoughts? Thanks.

Ask HN: How to get back into reading fiction/long form content?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=27695407I read technical manuscripts (think arxiv.org) pretty frequently, try to emulate new ML papers based on these papers. Also like to read Wikipedia and old newspaper articles - I feel like I "read" a lot but I just constantly get a sense that I'm missing out from an experience that was possible from before computers. Anyone have any advice?

Launch HN: Turing College (YC W21) – Online data science schoolhttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=27686395My name is Lukas. My co-founders (Benas and Tomas) and I are building Turing College (https://www.turingcollege.com), a career school that ensures that students are work-ready on day one of their new position. We’re currently focusing on data science skills. When the three of us entered university, we were taken back by the outdated teaching methods. We still smile when we remember learning Excel via a whiteboard! While studying, we were also running an IT and education consulting business that had an accounting return rate (ARR) of $0.6M and was expanding fast. This quickly taught us that the way developers are educated is not aligned with the hiring and onboarding processes of the tech companies looking to hire them.We saw this issue from both sides of the hiring process. As students, we were learning subjects that didn’t prepare us practically to deliver results for companies from day one. As employers, we were frustrated when hiring students based only on their educational credentia

Ask HN: Quick and high-level tutorials for Python – or any other language?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=27668109I'm thinking of learning Python but all the tutorials that I can find are cookie-cutter SEO'd tutorials on Google. The main issue I have with these is that they are more geared towards beginners and focus on things like what ints/floats/strings are and what functions are etc, etc,, Is there a place where I can get a quick-and-dirty overview of the language that are geared towards people who are familiar with at least the basics preferable something that's short-ish (not book-length).Come to think of it, is there any good way to find such tutorials for other languages/frameworks, preferably some central repo/collection (like Github "Awesome" lists) where I can find tutorials specific to my experience level in that language/framework?
