Show HN: Free TCG Proxy Manager for Magic, Yugioh, and Pokemonhttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=42635049Trading cards are awesome, but paying $30 for some cardboard isn’t. I’ve upscaled 60,000 cards from the entire catalog of Yugioh, Magic, Pokemon, & a newer game, https://elestrals.com. I've made it easy to build a decklist, download it, and then print at home. Modern inkjet printers got really good when nobody was looking. While it’s clear they’re not real cards, the upscaling makes them look great for casual play (these are not tournament legal). It’s totally free, give it a try!Supplies: [url-redacted] Printer Settings: [url-redacted] Instructions: [url-redacted]Overview: I built [name-redacted] because I had some scripts to do this lying around, and wanted to explore the new Rails 8 magic. Show HN: Liquid Budget – A zero-sum envelope budgeting applicationhttps://www.liquidbudget.comHello hackers, I built Liquid Budget, a budgeting application as an alternative to YNAB. The core concept is that every dollar is allocated to digital envelopes, and as daily transactions occur you spend from your envelopes and manage overdrafts, almost as if you had micro bank accounts.Tech stack: - Frontend: React/TypeScript with Zustand for state and Shadcn/Radix components - Backend: Java/Spring Boot/MySQLI built this primarily for users who wanted a cheaper alternative to YNAB with a guarantee of no price increases. Along the way I improved on a number of things such as credit card handling, but the main catch is that there is no automatic bank import for transactions. I understand that's a non-starter for many, but not all people.I'd love any feedback on: - Additional features and UX suggestions - Useful reports to addAnd whatever else!Jan 3, 2025 9:05 PM

A data strategy is essential for generative AI appshttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=42434555Hey everyone! Eric from Firecrawl here (YC S22), I wanted to share some takeaways from building AI chat products for enterprises at Mendable!A year ago, Generative AI powered search seemed like the perfect quick win for companies taking their first steps with AI.After building AI search for companies like MongoDB, Coinbase, and Snap at Mendable, we learned the nuances that make the difference between a demo and a production-ready system that actually drives value. Before we came in, almost every company had a few engineers creating prototypes yet most of which fell short following contact with real users. It all comes back to a simple truth: the system is only as good as the data going in.As you scale, here’s why the simple approaches break:- Context crowding: Correct context for a given query gets crowded out by bad context. Take the Snap AR docs for example, they have 4 different products on their developer documentation website and they all have getting started pages. If a user asks aDec 16, 2024 7:41 PM

Ask HN: Is it perfectly legal for Google to modify a user's android settings?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=42418060After being presented with an insurmountable 'agreement wall' for the Messages app (demanding I associate an account that was already associated), I forced the app to stop and uninstalled the update, which I suspect is RCS related. This allowed me to continue using Messages without succumbing to the new agreement. But every other day or so, it would occur again and I'd do the same.Realizing that I couldn't be uninstalling this many updates, I checked Play Services and found 'my' settings had been altered to Auto Update - something I always explicitly deactivate with no exceptions. I don't want disruptive updates or stupid apps, at least half or more of which are unused, unwanted and non-removable. Unfortunately, the many such apps had now been auto updated. There's no reason to pedantically remind me of encyclopedic user agreements and voluminous terms. I know. But is there any recourse in fighting this, beyond not using Android?Regardless of technicalities, it's intrusive and plain wroDec 14, 2024 4:39 PM

Show HN: I combined customer support and customer success tools for PLG SaaShttps://clickconnector.com/I’m an indie hacker who previously built a customer communication platform specifically for travel agencies.Initially, I couldn’t rely on existing live chat software to support my product because it already included a built-in live chat feature (even though it was meant for travel agencies at first).Over time, I started building tools to solve my own problems. Every weekend, I’d hack together a new feature—not just to make my product better, but also to scratch that coding itch (yeah, I know, classic indie hacker move). What started as small experiments snowballed into building KnowledgeBase Portals, Feature Request Boards, Bug Report Boards, Changelogs, Email Drip Campaigns, Product Tours, Checklists, NPS tools, and more. The funny part? Travel agencies didn’t really care about all these extra tools—they didn’t need them. I was the only user who actually used everything I built. For the past few weeks, I’ve been reworking the positioning of my product—shifting from targeting travel agenDec 13, 2024 8:52 AM

Is Promo Abuse Draining Your Marketing Budget?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=42397170Are promotions in your marketing strategy, especially for B2C businesses—becoming a double-edged sword? While discounts and incentives are great for attracting new users, are they also silently draining your budget through promo abuse?s it possible to maintain attractive promotions while effectively managing abuse? Tools that analyze device intelligence and detect anomalies (like tampering or emulator use) can help identify and block suspicious activity in real-time. For example, solutions that use rule orchestration allow businesses to fine-tune fraud prevention without disrupting legitimate users. But the real question is: Do you think promo campaigns are still worth the risk in today’s climate of rising fraud? Or are there smarter, safer alternatives?Dec 12, 2024 7:53 AM

Show HN: KitchenAI Open Source LLMops development kit. Notebook to serverhttps://github.com/epuerta9/kitchenaiOver the last year of building AI enabled SaaS applications I became increasingly frustrated at the developer experience of going from AI RAG cookbooks authored in jupyter notebooks to integrating it into my application. Notebooks are great and all but it's incredibly hard to test which part of it was actually important for my app. This led me down the road of having to understand every piece of code in each notebook, deciphering what was important, somehow build an API server as a POC to then hook it into my app. The feedback loop was excruciatingly long, painful, and most of the time I canned the POC because it wasn't quite what I wanted.this is when it dawned on me that the roles in the AI developer world are fractured into two. Data Scientists and AI devs want easy notebooks to test methods and techniques but do not care to ship something that can be easily be consumed by applications. In the other camp lies application devs, they just want simple API's that they can use to test quiDec 8, 2024 9:44 PM
