Ask HN: If and WHEN to open source softwareI've written an API to handle forms on static web sites (like formspree.io but with different focus on features and architecture) and think about open sourcing it.What keeps me from doing that is some questions/concerns I think I want to think through are holding me back.1. It's not yet covered with tests because I started the project by prototyping with trial&error2. The code quality is not bad but I wouldn't consider it being good either (I'm not sure if it's ready for prime time)3. I haven't figured out what license I want to choose4. I don't have time to maintain any open source project at the moment because I'm drowning in other tasks right now (just took the time to write the tool because I don't want to use services that rely on other services which complicates the legal stuff)On the other hand I know I could learn something from issues, pull requests etc. and it would be a good way to: a) improve security and code quality b) give something back to the community (as I can't dona

Ask HN: What makes a GREAT hackathon?I'm helping organize the next hackathon where I work. We have something like 30-50 people participating across technical frontend and backend teams, including UIUX folks, PMs and others.Typically our hackathons are 3 days long and are self-organized in to teams who go for various bounties. Anyone can suggest a bounty which might come with a trophy and maybe a gift card. Typically - but not exclusively - the hacks have been work related. We usually have a food challenge too during the event. Last time it was "who could eat the most pirogies" (the winner ate 100 over 3 days :-) ). We have a show & tell event at the end and open voting on the winners.We're open to changing things up!What have you seen (timing, tasks, organizationally or anything else) that works well or poorly in a hackathon?Thanks HN!

Ask HN: How to help people that shut themselves in?We are about to start a study to identify what causes flares and remission in a chronic condition. The problem is that about half of people with this condition can't differentiate between good and bad days in terms of symptoms. A trusted buddy (in real world) could to do it for them, but they often shut themselves in, and all of their interactions are online not in the physical world.The condition is idiopathic malodor - when body loses ability to "deodorize" digested food in the blood and malodor episodically emits from all the skin pores at seemingly unpredictable times.My questionnaire asks questions like how many people interacted with them in the last 24 hrs, how many of these interactions were positive, if they felt well-rested, depressed, miserable, had any physical symptoms (based on quality of life questionnaires).Any other suggestions on how to differentiate their flareups from remissions?
