Ask HN: What silly or weird web search did you do recently?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49408093Web searches have become a common part of most peoples' lives. But there are times when an 'innocent bystander' might ask themselves: "What the #&$@ is that?".So: what web search did you do recently, where (imagining average-dude-in-the-street looking over your shoulder) that person might utter a WTF or two? Multiple answers allowed! Please keep in mind that HN users (on average) do not qualify as "average dude in the street". Whoever he/she/they may be. What may seem ordinary/known to many on HN, may not seem so to most other people. And the reverse may also be true: HN users could be less likely to keep tabs on say, the latest memes, TikTok videos or celebrity gossip.Perhaps it's a good idea to leave names of software projects out? There's sooooo many, a significant fraction of those passing by on HN posts don't ring any bell for me.Let's summarize it as "whatever might pique a random bystander's intellectual curiosity".Aug 23, 2026 11:57 AM

Show HN: linecast – weather, radar, tides and maps in the terminalhttps://terminaltrove.com/linecast/I've been working on linecast, a free and open source collection of six terminal applications: weather, radar, sunshine, moon, tides, and maps. It's as if the Old Farmer's Almanac was built for Minitel.I made it because I'd been using the terminal a lot more over the past couple of years, I'm opinionated about weather forecast IA and design, and I liked the idea of making useful little terminal desk ornaments. The applications use ANSI color and Unicode braille characters rather than graphics. They reflow as the terminal is resized and derive their colors from your current terminal palette, including when the theme changes while they're running. They're mouse friendly where it makes sense. There's no account or required API key. Forecasts and air quality come from Open-Meteo; alerts, tides, and radar use various public sources; Sun and Moon positions are calculated locally; and the maps use OpenStreetMap-derived vector data and public elevation tiles. The code is just the Python stdlib wiAug 23, 2026 11:56 AM

Show HN: Room Acoustic and HRTF Simulatorhttps://nikhil-verma.com/room-signal/I've been fascinated with how sounds bounce around the room and enter your ears, and how you can find out with two sets of microphones on your head whether the audio is coming from front or behind you.So I tried to build a simulator that allows you to play different kinds of audio in different scenarios and it traces their acoustics and bounces around the room and lets you play them on your headphones to feel like how it would feel if you were in that room.Source: https://github.com/NikhilVerma/room-signalAug 23, 2026 11:55 AM

Ask HN: What made you stop relying on tutorials?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49407394I learned to program mostly by tutorials. I did what they told me and it all seemed to be straightforward. But when I started up the editor and tried to build something without the tutorial, I often found I didn't understand the logic as well as I thought I did.I’m starting to think the tutorials are good to get you started on a project, but the real shortcomings become apparent during the building phase. Why did you stop using tutorials? What did you do instead?Aug 23, 2026 9:41 AM

Show HN: Opensourcing Lemmaflow – A trust harness for AI-native appshttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49407337Hi HN, I am introducing Lemmaflow (https://github.com/lemmaflow/lemmaflow) - an open source harness to build & production applications with trust. We all are using AI to ship applications but most of the time the app itself is not safe for the end user. It might leak data, it might violate GDPR, it might ignore cookies. The trust problem is the primary reason why there's still a huge gap in what can be shipped by an experienced dev with AI vs one who is just vibecoding.Lemmaflow tries to cut this gap by introducing a set of 200+ implementable policies and run audits and tell Claude to exactly build trustworthy apps.Do give this a try.Aug 23, 2026 9:32 AM
