Ask HN: Macbook or Linux Laptop for devs and heavy users?Hey everyone, I'm really curious to hear from people who pushes high end MacBooks and Linux laptops to their limits in daily use. I'll share my daily experience with my Linux laptop below, and I'm hoping to use the feedback from those who have been on both sides to decide if I should make the jump to a MacBook in the future. My experience: I'm a web developer doing both frontend and backend. I also do some mobile dev with Flutter. Personally, I prefer using an Android phone and a Linux machine. I'm currently using an Acer laptop with an i7-13700H and 32GB of DDR4 RAM. I got my company to buy it for way cheaper than similar models on the market. While the overall performance is really good for the price, the speakers are absolute trash and the screen is just okay. Here is what's on my mind: Even though I can get about 3-4 hours of coding done on battery, it's obviously nowhere near a MacBook. I don't really need that long battery life most of the time, but it still sounds nice to have.

What's the best way to sanity-check severance/termination pay rules in Canada?Hi folks. I’m in Canada and a friend was recently terminated (3 weeks ago). They were confused about what they’re actually owed (statutory minimums vs. what lawyers negotiate under common law, and how it varies by province vs. federal rules).I saw an opportunity, so I built a simple “statutory minimum estimate” calculator to help people get a baseline, but I’m curious how others approach this problem. Are there good sources you trust for province-by-province rules?Any gotchas people repeatedly miss (termination pay vs severance pay, benefit continuation, vacation pay, etc.)?If you’ve built tools in this space, what’s the best way to present disclaimers without making it useless? If anyone wants to see the tool I built, I can share it in the comments. Just looking for ways to help people out during a crappy time.

Show HN: Travel Safety DataI've had this idea sitting in a file for years but until I just got Claude Code at Christmas time, never had to time to actually implement it. It seemed like a good test for Claude Code and with 2x christmas usage, why not?The goal was aggregating different travel warnings from multiple government sources to get a sense of how safe a country was to visit. It aggregates from US, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand and UK (Australia scraper didn't go so well). I was shocked how effectively it was able to accomplish that, so I added some more data I thought might be useful if I were considering traveling to a country and pulled government/UN/edu data about things like water/food safety, healthcare/vaccines/diseases, emergency numbers, natural disaster risks, women's safety, lgbtq safety.Throw in a nice map visualization and ability to compare, I'm pretty shocked and happy how well I think it came out. I wanted to share it with the community, maybe folks find it helpful and/or have ideas for ways

Show HN: Startup Ideas Vault – 1500 app/site ideas from Google AutocompletionsI built a tool that systematically pulls Google autocomplete suggestions for "an app to/for/that" across the entire alphabet and surfaces 500+ real app ideas that people are actually searching for.Unlike brainstormed lists or AI-generated ideas, these come directly from Google's autocomplete data – meaning real people typed these phrases when looking for solutions. Stuff like "an app to find parking spots," "an app for tracking plant watering," "an app that translates dog barks" (yes, really).Built this in about 7 hours using the existing Google Autocomplete A-Z API I built. The data updates daily and I flag anything that appeared in the last 7 days as "new" to catch trending ideas. What I'm still working on: Right now it's just a clean list of keywords, which feels a bit dry. I'm still looking for ways to surface the most interesting/viable ideas and trying to add context. If anyone has creative ideas for presenting this kind of data, I'm all ears. Also curious: What other categories wo

Show HN: iOS Screen Time from a REST APIWe're Oliver and Royce and we're the founders of Clearspace. We build tools to help people reduce their screen time (here’s us two years ago: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=35888644)We get all kinds of requests from users for ways they'd like to use their screen time data.- “Auto-donate $x to charity every time I exceed a limit or try to bypass it”- “My 75 Hard group has a screen time requirement, can we set up group visibility?”- “Let my personal agent know if it’s a good time to tackle things on my todo list”- “Auto-report large deviations in my screen time to my therapist “We aren't able to build for all of them, so we're releasing this API.This is the first time iOS Screen Time is accessible on the web. Apple doesn’t expose it, but since we measure it ourselves, we can - via UI or API. We're launching this API so developers can build all these tools and more. Our goal is to enable more solutions to what we believe is the biggest problem in the world - the misalignment of huma
