Wayland, Pipewire, Open Source Slowly Closing?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49308990I am kinda depressed over these factors. I have used linux since 2015 and really never ran into problems until the past five years.I am a composer with a prolithic output; and had a steady workflow for most of the years until musegroup bought out audacity and musescore. (which i have been able to get musescore 2 in a few distros; as i prefer this over any of the post-musegroup alterations.)the same goes for audacity; prior to their changes it worked... everything flowed beautifully; and boom so many issues occured. (they still do...) since then i started using Tenacity's appimage and have some similar workflow issues due to it being a copy of post changes instead of pre-changes... (2.4.2)I went from debian to mint; due to the fact that debian wouldn't install on a new nvidia laptop. (and couldn't figure out why due to search being enshitified. or i just don't know how to search)After this; i learned about pipewire and wayland... which are implimented poorly in Mint (XFCE)Wayland has beAug 15, 2026 9:05 AM

Ask HN: What's slop? what's AI written text and why read/not read?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49289341Question, I check HN often, and noticed the trend towards "it's obvious that was written by AI so I didn't read it", or couldn't handle it, or hate the way the prose it's written. And a similar behavior towards AI generated code, also mirrored by multiple AI policies around AI submitted patches/PRs.Now question, say you have an idea about x product, or y improvement as a patch to a OSS, or whatever where AI can help you, then youa) outsource to this team of people, local to you, same language, you can go and say hi to the person working on it, then don't review the output and put on github b) team is in your country, more difficult to go say hi, but you don't review the output and put on github c) same but the team is in another country d) same but the work is done by a contractor of a contractor, again you don't review and put it on github e) ask it to the free chatgpt version, don't review, post to github f) ask it to haiku on your 20$ claude account, don't review, post it to github gAug 13, 2026 5:37 PM

Show HN: Lethe is a portable identity layer – user consentedhttps://lethe-ai.vercel.appDuring my mtech I constantly used to navigate across a bunch of AI apps—from Gamma AI for decks to ChatGPT for understanding and navigation to Cursor, Claude, or Deepseek for coding, reorganizing, and more, as when one or other plans expire or take time to reset. My biggest issue—I couldn't transfer all required context and understanding of the same when moving across different LLMs. This is where Lethe comes into use as a base layer for all of these, and it works in the way I want it, that is, the user wants it. You can just import your existing data from ChatGPT, Deepseek, Grok exports, docs, or read-only Gmail, or just say what you want. Lethe derives an understanding of your projects, decisions with reasoning (if visible/unpredictable on moods), goals, and preferences—with each claim paired to the quote it showed up on along with a constant updating confidence score. Show HN: Django-Style Queries for SQLAlchemyhttps://github.com/ViAchKoN/sqlalchemy-query-managerHey!Wanted to share the project I've worked on for more than a year. The core was done last summer but since then I couldn't find time to implement all the functionality I had in mind. But a few months ago, I made myself sit down and plan the introduction of the remaining things. And with the release of 0.7.0 I can say that 85 percent is done and I'm ready to share it.I wrote a Python package which serves as a layer on top of SQLAlchemy and allows you to write Django-style queries. The idea came from work where we had an additional helper file which had methods for select, filters and other simple queries. When we didn't use those helper methods we wrote queries using the SQLAlchemy syntax which took a lot of time and code space. Especially the fact that you need to specify a model in filtering. In the end I decided to move all those helper methods to a package thereby we can just import them from one place. Django style format was selected because, personally, I found it easy to read anAug 10, 2026 6:03 PM

AI Video Taking over YouTubehttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49224311I was just casually browsing youtube yesterday and noticed a very interesting video about some robot rabbits being used to capture everglade pythons. Started watching - the narrative was very engaging - done by someone in first person who looked like an experienced wildlife researcher and the story narrated through appropriately placed clips of huge pythons and robot bunnies.Watched for around 2 mins of the 10 min long clip - and then it suddenly hit me like a rock - the entire video was AI. The narrator, the voice over, the python clips - all of it was generated by AI. And I pride myself on someone who can spot AI from a mile away, but this was shockingly good.I hit the comments and there it was. Not a single comment reporting this as AI. Showed it to a friend and he couldn't believe it either. And then today. It happenned again. Entirely different topic - Goldman Sachs abandoning New York because of Mamdani. Deep, engaging, first person narration. But everything was AI, and no one seeAug 8, 2026 6:11 PM

Ask HN: I can't post in Show HNhttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49206984I recently built an html+pdf documentation framework that uses Typst and I want to post to Show HN, so I created a new account last week but when I try to submit my post it only shows "we are temporarily restricting Show HN" and "spend some time to comment, get around with the community," etc.Are there any ways to remove the restriction? I read some other posts like https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=47875235 and sent an email to hn@ycombinator.com five days ago. I believe I made myself pretty clear in my email:> Hi, I'm Jeremy. The project's link is https://wensimehrp.github.io/haita. I did not write it with LLM assistance. Can you please lift the restriction on my account? Tried Canva, searched for templates, find none either. Then I designed one from scratch on Canva. Now, I want others to never design it again.Simple app. A tweet-style template. You change the photo, name, and add your content, then download the image as JPG to post on Socials.Very simple. No login. No backend. No AI features. 100% free.Built for myself - but might be useful to others. Enjoy!Aug 5, 2026 11:56 AM
