I don't enjoy winning if my opponent disconnected. I don't enjoy beating people who don't know how to move pieces. I don't enjoy winning with an engine, and coding agents are basically "winning with a chess engine".I started to use AI for coding a long time ago, when copilot was first introduced. At first, I was happy: "wow, this can write boring boilerplate and unit tests". Time went by, agents got better, time spent writing code myself went down. Half a year ago I suddenly realized I hadn't written any code for over a month, and I am a full-time software dev without any managing work. Kid actually building the machine all by himself -- 100% yes, even if it's quite expensive; kid then Counter Striking, Call of Dutying etc for hours on dat 27" screen -- ugh!What complicates things is that I myself am more of a "computational minimalist" using 15 year old machines in a cli-only environment etc. I've tried to show him That Path also ("dude, here's some Turbo Pascal for ya!"), but, well, obviously he's preferring those addictively engineered and GPU-hungry multiplayer games with his friends any day.He's a good kid all in all, actively engaged in competitive rowing, with good grades etc. Plays chess also (but all the other folks are FPSing or Minecrafting, so there's that).

Show HN: Pressure – a simple 2D board game in JavaScripthttps://ilmenit.github.io/pressure/I'm a fan of minimalistic design and I tried to make an "easy to learn, hard to master" 2D board game.Pressure is played on a 5×5 grid with 12 tokens total. The key mechanic is a "push" feature where tokens can displace entire lines of other tokens if there's an empty space at the end of the line. When opponent tokens are pushed, they become inactive for one turn. Capture occurs when tokens are surrounded on all four sides.After analyzing gameplay data, I found Pressure has an average branching factor of 11.5, which is higher than Othello (10) and Checkers (2.8), though lower than Chess (35). Its game tree complexity is approximately 10^57, placing it remarkably close to Othello (10^58) and much higher than Checkers (10^40), despite the smaller board size.The state space complexity appears to be in the range of 10^20, comparable to Checkers, which is notable given Pressure uses a 5×5 grid versus Checkers' 8×8 board.
