Show HN: PicoVision – A HDMI video stick with dual RP2040 chips (CPU and GPU)https://shop.pimoroni.com/products/picovisionI thought it might be a fun one for the HN crowd, to celebrate the launch of our latest product we're running a demoscene competition to see what people can squeeze out of it - details here: https://shop.pimoroni.com/pages/win-a-500-gift-card-in-our-p...PicoVision sports two RP2040 chips (one on a PicoW with WiFi and Bluetooth) acting as GPU and CPU allowing you to drive a HDMI display with smooth fullscreen animation - it can even play DOOM!There's a heap of interesting features built into the GPU firmware including support for "soft" (?!) hardware sprites, palette modes, scrolling, and more! The GPU and CPU share a pair of 8MB PSRAM chips that are swapped each frame using an analog multiplexer to allow them to pass the framebuffer and other information between them with no overhead during VSYNC.It also has a HDMI connector, a microSD socket, GPIO pins, a Qw/ST connector, some buttons, and audio out meaning there are a lot of possibilities from gaming to digital signage and anything i

Disney – DEI requires a history of privilegehttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=37876610For background, I am currently a Principal Engineer at a close to FAANG level company, with 16 years of experience in the software industry and a college drop out. I had my own startup for 11 years, chased VC funding, managed and scaled software teams, and scaled software systems to millions of daily active users.I decided it was time for a change so I applied for some lead software engineering roles at Disney. Today I had a phone screening that lasted about 10 minutes. The second the recruiter asked about my highest form of education and I responded that I am a drop out, I could hear the hesitation in her voice so I asked if that was a deal breaker. Of course it was, but based on the years of experience they can see if I still map to the role.Unfortunately after she did the math my 16 years of experience with no degree only qualifies for a junior engineering role across all of Disney Engineering. To even qualify for a senior role, I needed 17 years of experience, and the lead role i a

Show HN: Launching a new home-grown embedding LLM for RAGhttps://vectara.com/how-boomerang-takes-retrieval-augmented-generation-to-the-next-level-via-grounded-generation/Hi HN!Vectara is a "batteries included" retrieval augmented generation platform. You can upload your rich text documents like PDFs, HTML pages, word docs, etc, or semi-structured JSON and Vectara handles the text and metadata extraction, segmentation, vector embedding, and vector storage, and keyword storage. You can ask a question or perform a search in the UI or via our APIs and Vectara will automatically handle the vectorization, structured metadata filtering, vector+keyword retrieval, hybrid blending, and generative summarization of the results. We're focusing on building and operationalizing the complex infrastructure for vector storage, hybrid retrieval, and generative summarization so you can use fairly high-level APIs and focus on building your own applications. We know that retrieval accuracy is incredibly important for RAG: garbage in, garbage out. We've seen a lot of projects not spend enough time on really getting the retrieval model right and wasting a lot of time/money wit

The Race for More Space: The flawed logic behind making space a 17th Critical Infrastructurehttps://spacenews.com/the-race-for-more-space/A bipartisan group of lawmakers recently introduced the Space Infrastructure Act, which pursues a recommendation made by the Cyberspace Solarium Commission 2.0 to designate space as the 17th U.S. critical infrastructure sector. While it’s encouraging to see Congress considering this issue seriously, designating space as a critical infrastructure sector puts form over substance and would not actually address the risk posed by adversaries like China and Russia or from natural phenomena such as space weather.

Ask HN: What do you think about a CEO providing human name to his business?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=37566574As I may get a CEO assistant job at a company dealing with lab equipment and reagents more aligned with my main science interests [1], I googled that company and found that its CEO seems to have a few other similar pharmaceutical companies. But one of them is named with a female human name.I think that business entities are a bit more abstract to bear the labels used for human bodies and it sounds strange for me. I would never buy anything from a company with any human name. This CEO is a PhD and his dissertation is aligned with my main interests, but I do not want to get into another type of bs with this CEO assistant job. What do you think about a CEO providing a female human name to one of his businesses?[1] https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=37560705

Show HN: WhatsApp-Llama: A clone of yourself from your WhatsApp conversationshttps://github.com/Ads-cmu/WhatsApp-LlamaHello HN!I've been thinking about the idea of a LLM thats a clone of me - instead of generating replies to be a helpful assistant, it generates replies that are exactly like mine. The concept's appeared in fiction numerous times (the talking paintings in Harry Potter that mimic the person painted, the clones in The Prestige), and I think with LLMs, there might actually be a possibility of us doing something like this!I've just released a fork of the facebookresearch/llama-recipes which allows you to fine-tune a Llama model on your personal WhatsApp conversations. This adaptation can train the model (using QLoRA) to respond in a way that's eerily similar to your own texting style. What I've figured out so far:Quick Learning: The model quickly adapts to personal nuances, emoji usage, and phrases that you use. I've trained just 1 epoch on a P100 GPU using QLoRA and 4 bit quantization, and its already captured my mannerismsTuring Tests: As an experiment, I asked my friends to ask me 3 quest
