Show HN: Tok'n'talk – Conversations using your ERC20/ERC71 tokenshttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=17957933Hi, we've created an app https://tokntalk.club/ to experiment with using tokens ERC20 and ERC721 in slightly different way than monetary use cases you're familiar with.ERC20 - They are treated as memberships in 'token clubs'. If you have given ERC20 token you can write messages in its dedicated club. eg. Maker MRK club https://tokntalk.club/clubs/MKR or in Berlin Coin BRLN club https://tokntalk.club/clubs/ethereum:0x80046305aaab08f6033b5...ERC721 - Those tokens can be used as avatars. To give you ability to change 'personalities', create their history and grow them as recognizable characters. We are supporting ~40 different kinds of ERC721s and we're always looking to integrate new ones. Now, you might be asking: Why?The reason is simple. We believe that this is the only way for blockchain community to go forward. Communication based on signed messages is crucial for progress but it's not enough. We need filters rooted in the very base of our beliefs. Filters that will help guard our atSep 11, 2018 8:05 AM

Ask HN: Why is hackernews so old-fashioned?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=17412237As a web developer, it's always seemed strange to me that a tech incubator would have such an old-fashioned website. It's nice in some respects - pages load extremely quickly and the layout is compact and to-the-point. I was starting to think it was just minimalist by choice and not actually outdated, but then someone mentioned that async requests are done through an tag instead of ajax, so now I'm wondering what the story is there?Has it just been left alone because it's not broken? Or because they're worried people would get upset about changes? Or for maximum backward-compatibility? I'm not complaining; I'm just really curious.Jun 27, 2018 10:04 PM

Is stack-overflow a block-chain concept?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=16003947I think that stack-overfow is conceptually a bitcoin for prestige. It should be easy to use a real block-chain to reflect the use of SO using prestige points as units of transactions. I believe that many of you are thinking of using block-chain as a way to achieve better interactions with your would be clients. And surely time is ripe for creating a chain-block abstraction whose main objective is to convert or introduce publically known value into money or other block-chain value so that recursively it finally achieves liquity and moneritation. In SO you can see the complete history of how someone gained prestige. SO a ledged book for prestige points , that book is a web page trusted internationally as of real value for programmers and open to knew transations openly with little censorship.Dec 25, 2017 12:58 PM

Ask HN: Which is the most powerful satellite camera directed towards earth?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=14139787Remember the scene from MIB where 'K' zooms in on his wife and watches her live. How close are we to that ?After a quick search, I found a few videos which showed scenes of an area with some traffic activity but it wasn't that zoomed in. As far as images go, I haven't found any other image source providing a better definition image than what Google Maps provide. The American government had used live satellite feed while carrying out the Bin Laden operation ( Source of Information: Documentary | Correct me if wrong ).Are there any images/videos publicly available which demonstrate the limits of cameras in space directed towards earth ?If not publicly available, can you describe how a possible image/video might look like and what are the current limits for those cameras ?Apr 18, 2017 3:44 PM

Ask HN: Software- Better to focus on or complement with?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=13858596From your experience, what advantages/disadvantages are there to: 1) Majoring in electrical engineering and physics, minoring in software development 2) Majoring in software engineering, minoring in electrically engineering and physicsContext: I'm a first year engineering student and would like to pick either Software Engineering (electrical engineering with computer science) or Engineering Physics (electrical engineering with physics). I already have a couple years experience programming, really enjoy it, and is why I went into the program. But, I've also really enjoyed physics and math classes and they've given me a strong desire to learn more about physics. Intuitively, I think that having a strong physics background opens the door to more problems I could solve with software. However, I don't want to to discount the value of studying software engineering. I don't have the experience to see what kind of walls and limitations each choice offers. What have you seen?Mar 13, 2017 3:27 PM

Ask HN: Mentor/Advisor for post-revenue EdTech Company?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=13793416Hello,EdTech is a wonky industry! Many downsides... but rewarding (social + profit) if you can carve out a foothold and grow your installed base. We're a small, bootstrapped, EdTech company in a niche space (think desktop application for a humanities field) that's looking for mentorship from an experienced EdTech veteran (either on the tech or business side). We've grown annual revenue to ~$600-700K (~$400K of that is ARR) across a variety of accounts: K-12, Universities, large publics, small privates, etc.Product engagement and customer satisfaction is great; we have low churn at an expensive price point + high conversion rates on pilot trials, but we're struggling to level up and grow to the next stage (which we define as $1MM+ ARR or an installed base across 500-1000 schools). There seems to be many older/experienced operators in the B2B and B2C spaces. Finding mentors in EdTech has been difficult for us.If you have a background in EdTech and are interested in mentoring a small, but hMar 4, 2017 11:10 PM
