NASA Hubble Helps Detect ‘Wake’ of Betelgeuse’s Elusive Companion Starhttps://science.nasa.gov/missions/hubble/nasa-hubble-helps-detect-wake-of-betelgeuses-elusive-companion-star/Using new observations from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope and ground-based observatories, astronomers tracked the influence of a recently discovered companion star, Siwarha, on the gas around Betelgeuse. The research, from scientists at the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian (CfA), reveals a trail of dense gas swirling through Betelgeuse’s vast, extended atmosphere, shedding light […]Jan 5, 2026 9:16 PM

Show HN: Logos of Aether – Rebuilding Physics Without Zero or Empty Spacehttps://github.com/chrisnchips42-blip/Logos-of-Aether-A-Measurement-Theoretic-Foundation-for-PhysicsBackground: I’ve spent the last few years writing Logos of Aether (500+ pages, open source), which attempts to derive the Standard Model using a monadic, cellular-automata approach rather than standard continuous calculus. The Core Idea: Modern physics breaks down at singularities because our math allows for infinite density (division by zero). I replaced standard addition with "Plenum Addition" (⊕), a saturating operation similar to velocity addition in Special Relativity, but applied to information density. The Math: Instead of linear addition (1+1=2), distinctions add via: x ⊕ y = (x + y) / (1 + xy/π²)This forces a hard ceiling on information density (π), naturally eliminating black hole singularities and "infinite energy" bugs in QFT without needing renormalization. Why I'm posting: I have the theoretical derivation (including a geometric derivation of the Electron Mass as an 11th harmonic resonance), but I am moving from "Paper" to "Engine." I am looking for contributors interested iJan 5, 2026 9:15 PM

Show HN: HackTheNews – iOS 26 Liquid Glass Hacker News Client with AI Summarieshttps://apps.apple.com/us/app/hack-the-news-ai-hn-reader/id6447095897Hey HN!I've been maintaining HackTheNews (a native iOS client for Hacker News) for a while now, and with iOS 26 dropping its new "Liquid Glass" design language, I couldn't resist doing a full visual overhaul. What's new: - Complete redesign using iOS 26's Liquid Glass materials - Translucent, layered UI that adapts to your wallpaper - New glass-style navigation and tab bars - Refined typography and spacing for the new aestheticImplementation notes for fellow iOS devs: - Used the new `.glassEffect()` modifiers throughout - Had to rethink some hierarchy decisions – Liquid Glass works best with fewer nested containersThe before/after difference is pretty striking. Happy to share more technical details if anyone's curious about adopting Liquid Glass in their own apps.Would love to hear your feedback – especially from fellow HN readers on what features you'd like to see next. Always open to suggestions!Jan 5, 2026 6:31 PM

Show HN: WOLS – Open standard for mushroom cultivation trackinghttps://github.com/wemush/open-standardI built an open labeling standard for tracking mushroom specimens through their lifecycle (from spore/culture to harvest).v1.1 adds clonal generation tracking (distinct from filial/strain generations) and conforms to JSON-LD for interoperability with agricultural/scientific data systems.Spec (CC 4.0): https://wemush.com/open-standard/specification Client libraries (Apache 2.0): Python + CLI: pip install wols (also on GHCR) TypeScript/JS: npm install @wemush/wolsBackground: Mycology has fragmented data practices (misidentified species, inconsistent cultivation logs, no shared vocabulary for tracking genetics across generations). This is an attempt to fix that.Looking for feedback from anyone working with biological specimen tracking, agricultural data systems, or mycology.Jan 5, 2026 6:30 PM

Launchie brings back the launchpad to macOS 26 Tahoehttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=46502060Launchie is a Launchpad replacement app for MacOS 26 Tahoe. It offers a lot of customization options and many features. It is my first Mac app and my first successful side project. First off, a huge thank you to all the amazing supporters! I’ve received a ton of feedback and feature requests, and they’re actively shaping the app. If it were just me coding into the void, this wouldn’t be possible - so thank you all! Now to the features: Organizing apps into folders Sorting apps in the root view and in folders Rearrange apps Spaces Open Launchie with Hot Key Open via Hot Corner Searching apps Topbar with most used, newest and recent used apps Hide apps Get apps from different locations Switch between windowed and fullscreen mode Customize app icon size, font, grid size, background mode, background tint, … I am actively developing the app so if you got an idea, found a bug or something else: just send me a mail and I will try to solve it :) Also if you like this app, please leave a reviewJan 5, 2026 5:47 PM

NASA’s Hubble Examines Cloud-9, First of New Type of Objecthttps://science.nasa.gov/missions/hubble/nasas-hubble-examines-cloud-9-first-of-new-type-of-object/A team using NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope has uncovered a new type of astronomical object — a starless, gas-rich, dark-matter cloud considered a “relic” or remnant of early galaxy formation. Nicknamed “Cloud-9,” this is the first confirmed detection of such an object in the universe — a finding that furthers the understanding of galaxy formation, […]Jan 5, 2026 5:15 PM

Show HN: I built music composition agent and browser-based DAW for Opus 4.5https://www.usecadenza.studio/I was interested in exploring how good Opus 4.5 has become at music composition, so I built a local-first browser-based DAW where you describe music and Claude composes it using an agentic loop with lots of tools (create tracks, write notes, read back what it wrote, apply swing, humanize timing, set panning/volume, etc.). It also supports recording via MIDI keyboard, looping, multi-track, panning, a bunch of synth instruments, all inspired by the Logic Pro UI, so you can collaborate with the AI.Opus 4.5 is pretty good at one-shotting MIDI compositions already, even without a custom harness and tool, but it really shines when you ask it to self-review (a Ralph Wiggum loop would help here!) and correct multi-track mistakes, which it will capably do after being asked to. This results in nuanced multi-voice compositions with fewer clashes. There's a good onboarding flow in there as well so it's easy to get set up and prompt your first few compositions. You have to provide an Anthropic API keJan 5, 2026 5:02 PM

Show HN: TinySolvers – Personalized Math Word Problems for Kidshttps://tinysolvers.com/Hi HN,I built TinySolvers (https://tinysolvers.com) as a side project to make math more engaging for kids. There are plenty of generic math worksheets online, but I wanted something more personal to help connect the math to the student. TinySolvers generates customized math word problems using a child’s name, favorite nouns (dinosaurs, pizza, unicorns), verbs (jumping, exploring), and a selected operation and difficulty level. For example:“Emma found 7 dinosaurs in the forest. She discovered 5 more hiding behind a tree. How many dinosaurs did Emma find in all?”You can download printable PDFs or use an interactive mode where kids solve problems one at a time with immediate feedback. It’s currently focused on early elementary arithmetic (K-5).Initially, I tried a large library of predefined word problems with string substitution, but that hit limits quickly. I experimented with Word2Vec to expand vocabulary (e.g., dinosaurs → T-Rex, Triceratops), but eventually landed on carefully constraiJan 5, 2026 2:45 PM
