Ask HN: How can I raise $250, fast?I am the lead welder, engineer, and machinist for my high school's Kinetic Sculpture Team. We participate in the Kinetic Grand Championship (http://www.kineticgrandchampionship.com) and the race is coming up in about 60 days. We have been working really hard and just got all 4 wheels attached to our sculpture yesterday. What we need now are two steel framed mountain bikes in good condition. We haven't been able to find anything within our budget on Craigslist (really rural area) and I have decided that we should just buy them. There is a local store that has exactly what we need for $100 apiece, but our team just doesn't have the money. We are a sort of under-the-radar club at our school, organized as a community service project. During the race, we raise money for a local homeless charity. Unfortunately, during the offseason, money really dries up. I have taken it upon myself to raise the money and I figure we will need around $250 in total for the two bikes and tax.I am coming here b

Ask HN: Market to ebay sellersHi,First, some context: I launched my web app a few days ago. My target market is eBay sellers. My app is a tool for them to find out which products are the most popular at the moment.The Problem: No one has clicked on my ad. Not 1 person! Now I'm no marketeer, but I am extremely motivated to learn! I decided that the best way to target my market is to use facebook. I've used the parameters People over 25 who have liked eBay. And I created a cliche ad trying to attract people who like making money. Here is a pic http://devcomsystems.com.au/fb_ad.png . One constraint on the ad is you are not allowed to use the word "eBay". FB have already suspended one account because of this.The question: How do you effectively market to eBay sellers? What are my best paths? Ask HN: Anyone else seeing Gmail's "Display density: Compact" not working?TL;DR: Gmail theme "Orcas Island" is borked. Any others?(Maybe I should have tried harder to squeeze "theme Orcas Island" into the title...)--Yes, this is using HN as "Google customer support", but what other option do I have?In Gmail's web client, I use the theme "Orcas Island" for a more pleasant experience. (Not only do I like the pictures; it also changes the background from white to a less bright gray-blue.)Today, in that theme, "Display density: Compact" is no longer working. Whitespace galore.I noticed some other Gmail changes, e.g. the prompt to confirm mobile phone number (for security notifications). So, maybe the same push broke this aspect of theming?So far, I've only noticed this affecting the theme "Orcas Island". (But, I'm not going to check them all...)Googling has revealed nothing on this.
