What could new US sanctions on Iran entail?https://www.france24.com/en/what-could-new-us-sanctions-on-iran-entailThe US says it is preparing to announce new sanctions on Iran. It's been billed an economic D-day and is expected to add further pressure on the country's economy that's already been battered from previous sanctions and a US naval blockade. The renewed economic pressure would not be the first time the US has used economic tools at its disposal to corner Iran. But what could the new measures likely entail?

Is it legal to train AI models on copyrighted books? It’s complicatedhttps://techcrunch.com/2026/08/23/is-it-legal-to-train-ai-models-on-copyrighted-books-its-complicated/Most published authors have, without their knowledge or consent, contributed to the development of the same AI tools that threaten to undermine their livelihoods. That seems illegal, right?

Show HN: Self-Hosted Social Media Agents with Raspberry Pihttps://www.microphone.computer/A while back I posted about a project I was working on for a real-time voice agent that runs ads on Meta to build conviction and prioritize side gig/business ideas (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=48900788); you yammer away and it automates market research, problem statements and hypotheses. I've been working with some folks from HN on the app since then. What we've been focused on building is a modern solo-founder GTM tool -- figuring out how to triangulate aspiration, problems only you can solve, and organic distribution in one solution. So, not building apps; but rather helping you figure out what you like and then connect you with the right people that can help you on your journey and find the communities to help you distribute it.For the latter, I was impressed by the recent Grok bot launch; but didn't want Elon accessing all of our accounts to train on -- so I set-up dockerized social media agents that run at home on a Raspberry Pi. They'll do the same job as Grok for this bu

Ask HN: Will AI trigger mass IP protectionism in software?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49408691One of the reasons AI is so "good" at software development is that it is trained on a snapshot of a large corpus of already solved software problems. In the future, wouldn't that make anyone who produces original code become more cautious of sharing it, being aware that it will just be fed into the "hive mind" and they'll never get any attribution or financial gain out of it?Or has the value of code, tools and software become so cheap it doesn't really matter anymore?

Show HN: Rmp, a Subsonic music player for generating playlists on the flyhttps://github.com/codesoap/rmpWhen listening to music, I often don't play whole albums, but string together songs that capture my current mood. In the past, I've written a tool that records my hearings and generates suggestions from my usual listening patterns[1] and used it with some scripts around mpd. This made my way of listening to music easier and worked decently, but I wished I could also sync and use this with my phone.Recently I've discovered Subsonic, a protocol for music servers and players. It caught my eye, because it supports "scrobbling" (apparently the common term for "recording hearings") and generating similar-song-lists. Pretty much exactly what I had been doing and many music players support this feature to create "instant playlists". With a little bit of hacking[2], it was easy to integrate my existing, collected hearing patterns into a Subsonic server. While I found a decent Subsonic client for my phone, I didn't find a terminal music player that worked for my style of listening. So I wrote rmp

Show HN: Hands-Rust MCP/CLI that sees the Windows desktop and clicks real Chromehttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49405405I built Hands because I wanted a coding agent to use this Windows PC and a real Chrome profile the way I do: look at the screen, move the real mouse, type, click , without turning Chrome into an automation browser. It is a Rust MCP/CLI. A harness (Grok, Codex, Claude Code, OpenCode, etc.) calls tools like observe, click, type, scroll. Observe is a screenshot path plus a small element list (UIA + optional Chrome DOM ids). Click is OS SendInput on a Bézier path, not a Chrome DevTools click. There is no Playwright, no Puppeteer, no remote debugging port. Daily Chrome is launched with no extra flags, or attached if it’s already open. Sites that key on CDP/automation flags mostly don’t see that. They can still see injected input (LLMHF_INJECTED).A tiny unpacked Chrome extension can fuse page structure (chr: ids, listing cards) so the model isn’t guessing from pixels. Sideload is manual. Fusion dies if the service worker goes inactive; reload the card. What it is good for: personal research on

Tell me "Yes" if you are handling any of below AI coding chaos..https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49402490If you're using Cursor, Claude Code, Codex, Antigravity or any other coding agent..Tell me "Yes" if you are handling any of below AI coding chaos..1. Too many AI agents.2. Copy-pasting context.3. Switching between agents.4. Losing project context and memory.5. Repeating the same prompts.6. Burning tokens on simple tasks.7. Paying for expensive models unnecessarily.8. Not knowing what AI changed.9. AI tools don’t talk to each other.10. Too many tabs. Too much chaos. No worries..We’ll show you what we’re building to fix it. Only 10 seats available. Comment if you are interested.

Show HN: Namo_complete: a non-obtrusive AI autocomplete for the bash terminalhttps://github.com/namo-robotics/namo_completeI created this simple AI autocomplete tool for the bash terminal. I'm sure many like it exist already, but unlike the others this one does not completely hijack your terminal and stays mostly out of the way. Contributions/feedback are welcome. One other interesting thing about it is that it's written in a custom memory-safe (aspirationally) language that I am developing.

Ask HN: If you dislike AI, why don't you prove it?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49401293I've seen so many people who absolutely hate AI, and want AI companies to fail, but then 2 seconds later, open up the coding tool made by frontier labs and willingly hand them money.Just recently convinced one of them to move away from the frontier lab lock-in to OpenCode and switch between models. Not saying they need to switch to non-frontier models immediately, but this approach lets them easily switch to open source when the time is right. Why don't more people do this? And shouldn't companies that use AI heavily also suggest this approach? To be clear, I like AI, and use it all the time, but I use it in a way that allows me to easily switch models and not get locked-in.

Show HN: 3D Engine for Rust Programshttps://github.com/David-OConnor/graphicsI mostly stabilized the API for this 2 years ago. Since then, I've made occasional performance improvements, and feature additions. It's built to support my structural biology programs, but can be used generally.I'm posting it here, as from what I understand, this is a surprisingly yet-to-be-developed space. This fits between lower-level tools (Which it relies upon) like WGPU or Vulkan bindings, and higher-level game engine and similar (e.g. Bevy).Use case: Create programs written in Rust that integrate a UI (EGUI) with 3D. Suited for scientific, or general visuals.

Im 18 and building my startup and this is what I feelhttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49398505Hi My name is ritu and ive built an autoML tool. The intention of this post to let people know about my journey because im tired to express my self to chatGPT. I am women in tech, majority of women are in biology , i was about to but i took u turn and chose IT idk why i mean i had PCB in higher secondary and i decided to choose a tech degree so i can build my startup. things are bit frustrating for me because im young, inexperienced, exhausted. People now started glorifying young builders but if you are one of them you know how tense it is for your age. i stay in my room 24/7, no friends, online degree no human exposer, just me my work, study and instagram reels , btw i create content too but as u know late teens you still have those stupid acnes which makes me feel insecure and i just dont shoot my reels its been a month i guess since i last posted, i dont have anyone to talk about whats going on with me , no partner, no friend, feels like a volcano ready to explodes, one of my follow

Continue coding agent is dead. Alternatives?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49398366It was nice to use on vscode with offline Ollama but today notices it is not updated anymore. So, alternatives you use? From github:"Note: The continuedev/continue repository is no longer actively maintained and is read-only for all users."From continue.dev:"Continue has joined Cursor Continue was acquired by Cursor. Our mission was always to ensure developers are amplified, not automated, and that commitment carries on in the work ahead. It was an honor to build with the Continue community. Thank you to each and every one of you who helped us create a pioneering open-source coding agent. What we built together pushed the boundaries of what AI developer tooling could be, and our open-source codebase remains freely available as a foundation for others."
