Should the FAA regulate all space activities?https://spacenews.com/should-the-faa-regulate-all-space-activities/If the FAA is set up as the new “Emperor of Space,” the U.S. will be setting forth on a path that ignores history and threatens the nascent space commercial sector. The FAA is a bad fit to regulate in-space activities other than the up-and-down through the atmosphere launches and entries it currently oversees and potentially future in-space transportation.Jun 10, 2023 6:05 PM

Ask HN: Is there a name for the phenomenon we have seen at Reddit/Twitter etc.https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=36257669So there's this pattern I've observed in the last few months in regards to big companies(tech or otherwise) which seems to have become more and more clear recently. If a product/service/offering has a large enough userbase, the userbase can be typically split into a "power user" and "casual user" category, no matter how niche the segment may be. For example, the set of people who own high end gaming PCs are already power users relative to the average computer user. But even in the gaming PC niche, one can classify people into power user or casual user in the context of Gaming PC owners. So if you can split a userbase into casual and power user, and a product has a large enough casual userbase, the company responsible for it can get away with making (often objectively) bad decisions that hurt customers but maximise profit and still get away with it.I've noticed so many examples in so many different spaces of this sort of thing happening. To name a few(some of which have already been extenJun 9, 2023 1:40 PM

Ask HN: Been at rock bottom for a year. Tryna start from scratchhttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=36246216Hi HN, I honestly don't know how to start this. I'd like to say I've fallen on hard times but I've been here for the past gods-know-how-many years. I don't see it getting any better. I got into programming 6 years ago after dropping out of college to deal with family BS and now I feel like it was the worst mistake I ever made. I got my first iOS job during all the turmoil. I felt like such a hero. I'd dropped out, taken the year to teach myself coding, went through the ups and downs of the job hunt, and I'd finally come out in a much better place than I could have dreamed. Nice paying job, ability to take care of the ruins, a gf I thought was loyal. I was playing my "role as a man". I made friends after what seemed like a lifetime of social inability. Turns out I was just getting emotionally and physically abused at home; takes a while to realize that when you're born in it. I even had my own apartment. Life was good. Most of my salary was going to taking care of others but I had more Jun 8, 2023 6:13 PM
