(Sorry for how long this is and if any of this sounds self-pitying—I struggle with that attitude, but I also don't think that's the only factor in my situation.)I started designing and building websites in 1999, when I was 11, and like some of you, I don't entirely love the course the web and tech in general have taken since then. I feel things have become overdesigned, overcomplicated, overly precious, and bloated.I like lightweight websites and fast native apps with OS GUIs and conventions. If I am going to design in the tech or tech-adjacent space, these are the things I want to work on. But instead every job opportunity I find is to work on a proprietary branded design system for a web app hell-bent on capturing and disempowering customers by dumbing things down as much as possible through obfuscation, abstraction, and infantilizing copy and aesthetics. I've had this idea for a company for the last few weeks.Finding proper medical care in the U.S. is probably the worst experience in life. I think healthcare insurance companies intentionally make it obtuse because they don't actually want you to get medical care. After all, they're a for-profit business.I have severe chronic pain in my leg from a sports injury. The process of finding medical care worked like this:1. Visit primary care doctor about specific symptoms (chronic pain).2. Doctor can't figure it out, refers me to specialist.3. Specialist can't figure it out, refers me to another specialist.4. Repeat step #3 a couple more times.5. Specialist refers me to "Pain Management" clinic. I am now on pain drugs for the rest of my life, instead of actually, you know, fixing the problem.Ideally, #2 or #3 results in a diagnosis and treatment that yields positive results.In my case, every doctor I encountered did not have the domain knowledge, experie

Tell HN: Cloudflare is rewriting my Date response headershttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=28157629Earlier this year I added HTTP response signatures to my business's API, per the HTTP draft spec [0]. These signatures utilize the standard Date response header to help prevent replay attacks among other attack vectors. But to my dismay, Cloudflare rewrites the Date response header at the edge. Meaning, if a particularly unlucky request leaves my servers at 14:01:26.999 with a Date header "Thu, 12 Aug 2021 14:01:26 GMT" and takes ~1ms to process at the edge, the Date header from Cloudflare ends up being "Thu, 12 Aug 2021 14:01:27 GMT". This is problematic when it comes to HTTP response signatures, since the signature is now invalidated. This ends up causing intermittent response signature verification failures.Cloudflare's support previously suggested that I use (and pay for) an unbound Cloudflare Worker to manually set the Date header to the value of some other internal, unmodified X-Date header.
