Ask HN: Is Apple Cringe?When I think back on Apple's public-facing persona over the years, I think about moments like:- The infamous (and edgy!) 1984 Super Bowl ad - The countercultural push of campaigns in the 90s and early 2000s, like "Think Different" and "Here's to the crazy ones." - The iPod ads that featured dancing silhouettes listening to iPods, contrasted with the white cable of the EarPods - The "I'm a Mac, I'm a PC" ads were funny, and also positioned Macs as "the computer for young, cool, creative people."All of these campaigns felt like they resonated with the Gen X and Millennials of the time as "edgy, cool, relevant."But watching Apple's recent events (WWDC, announcements), looking at how they show up on social media and in their print ads, it all feels corporate, safe, and more than a little cringe.I know that statistically, most Gen Z prefer iPhones.But I'm wondering what today's Gen Z and Gen Alphas think about the brand. But now, with browsers shipping support for WebGPU and canvases with extended color spaces, it's actually feasible.So what I wanted to was make an image editor capable of doing the simple edits I often need to do, but with full HDR support, which is rare in browser editors. Turning up the brightness on an HDR-capable monitor is a great way to see what your monitor can do :PI tried to go overboard in every way I could. So brightness/saturation/hue adjustments use the okLCH color space, and there's an option to do a "content-aware resize" with seam carving, which is fast because it's parallelized using Sam Westrick's triangle-blocking algorithm [0].Also, the site supports importing HEIC photos as taken with an iPhone, which is surprisingly hard to do correctly. Getting back into photography, ditching the phone camera in 2026?I've been looking through twenty-five-odd years of my own photos. The collection includes scanned 35mm and medium format images; digital pictures from a few Canon Powershot generations and a 20D SLR; and about five iPhones.I've noticed that the non-cell-phone pictures tended to be better, and that in general I seemed to have quite a bit more fun with photos taken with, well, "real" cameras. Probably the best ones were taken with the 20D, which for its time was a really nice camera, for which I was able to bring over some lenses from my film days.I wouldn't rule out more film photography but I think of that as a somewhat separate track. I'd like to get a digital camera that captures a bit more of what I enjoyed about film photography - that high image density, looking through a physical viewfinder, not necessarily curating images in real time... looking, shooting, and moving on.I've been following Fujifilm cameras for awhile in this market, having read about them here a few years ago.
