Ask HN: How to deal with GDPR / cookie notices in the context of a crawler?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=17795750To comply with the new European legislation many websites put a GDPR / cookie consent notice in front of their websites. There are different implementations of this. While some are only implemented as modal covering the website or bar on the bottom of the screens (in both cases right next to the original content), other implementations redirect the user to a totally different (sub-)domain or even hijack the request and show the consent form instead of the requested content (on the same URL with a 200 status code). The latter ones present a issue to my crawler. I cannot access the content of the page without accepting those notices.Things I'm considering to bypass those notices:* US IP address (easy to implement, but some websites also display those notices to US IP's)* Heuristics to detect those notices and accept them programatically (takes some time to implement - while a couple of vendors (i.e. OneTrust) offer off-the-shelf solutions which are easy to identify and automate, there areAug 19, 2018 7:22 PM

Ask HN: What language/stack to use for “customer ready” SBCs/sensors/GUI?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=17755529I've been making various systems using RPi/Arduino/ESP8266 and sensors for a while, but very hobby level. Adafruit parts, prototyped using breadboards, copy/paste code from online and modify it. Have made a few weather stations, and basic home automation.I'm completely in love with this, and want to take it further, and do these projects "properly".I don't know any "real" programming languages, but have been tinkering with web projects for 30+ years (php, mysql, js, css, cgi/perl back in the day). Just for background. So I'm willing to learn anything required from scratch, and timeframe doesn't matter, I'm willing to commit long term. What absolutely matters, is I want to learn stuff that will still be around years from now. I don't care about the latest/greatest frameworks/languages, but longevity and reliability are paramount. These projects will end up being used in real-life situations on family farms and in family companies, and I want them to be good enough to set/forget.Getting sAug 14, 2018 4:08 AM

Ask HN: How much more desperate and crappy can Facebook get?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=17689059For the past year or so, I have significantly reduced my usage of Facebook, I have stopped posting status updates, mainly just keeping my account for getting event invitations. Today for the first time, I noticed a "Stories from across Facebook" feature that shows content that have absolutely nothing to do with the lives of people you know, but random news articles on all sorts of topics (god knows if half of these news sources are even credible). Did a quick search of this feature, apparently it's been introduced a few months back and there is no way for users to turn it off. Their support team simply dismissed everyone by telling them to submit product feedback rather than addressing the question on how to turn off the feature: https://www.facebook.com/help/community/question/?id=10216902612096563I am once again deeply disappointed by how aggressively Facebook tries to shove things down their users throats.
