Show HN: Tok'n'talk – Conversations using your ERC20/ERC71 tokenshttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=17957933Hi, we've created an app https://tokntalk.club/ to experiment with using tokens ERC20 and ERC721 in slightly different way than monetary use cases you're familiar with.ERC20 - They are treated as memberships in 'token clubs'. If you have given ERC20 token you can write messages in its dedicated club. eg. Maker MRK club https://tokntalk.club/clubs/MKR or in Berlin Coin BRLN club https://tokntalk.club/clubs/ethereum:0x80046305aaab08f6033b5...ERC721 - Those tokens can be used as avatars. To give you ability to change 'personalities', create their history and grow them as recognizable characters. We are supporting ~40 different kinds of ERC721s and we're always looking to integrate new ones. Now, you might be asking: Why?The reason is simple. We believe that this is the only way for blockchain community to go forward. Communication based on signed messages is crucial for progress but it's not enough. We need filters rooted in the very base of our beliefs. Filters that will help guard our atSep 11, 2018 8:05 AM

What should I do to increase my chances of getting a comp sci job?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=15008023Hi, I am currently studying towards a degree in computer science (also minoring in stats and biochem). I'm a bit worried about finding a job in the future as the industry is really competitive. I would like to get a job in data science, but I'm keeping my options open.I know when applying for jobs I should definitely have a portfolio for my own personal projects. I plan on doing that this summer, but I'm just not sure how complex my programming project should be or how many individual projects I should have. Also, I'm not sure if I should focus on planning and programming my personal projects or if I should focus on other extracurriculars to build up my CV or resume; should I also volunteer, tutor students, and join university clubs/programs? Should I try and win various "leadership" awards and scholarships? I think I will try to do both but do you think I should really focus on one thing rather than the other? What do you think employers prefer? Also what were your experiences when appAug 14, 2017 11:55 AM

Ask HN: Moratorium on threads related to the culture wars and identity politicshttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=10659075The Hacker News guidelines permit "anything that gratifies one's intellectual curiosity".Now, even HN qualifies what isn't suitable for political stories: "Most stories about politics, or crime, or sports, unless they're evidence of some interesting new phenomenon." Rest assured, most such stories do not satisfy this criterion, or wear off their novelty all too quickly.Be it the Millennials whose whining will immanentize the eschaton, the white heterosexual males and their original sin of mercantilism and colonialism, the feminists and Cultural Marxists who want to usurp Western values (whatever they are this month)... it is all grinding. The chief complaint, of course, is that threads on this subject are devoid of any value pertaining to debate. They instead serve as hubs for signaling normative dispositions. The inevitable result of such vacuous posturing is attrition. Discussions grow ever more primordial, threads on the subject increase and these elements spill over to other threadsDec 1, 2015 9:48 PM

Patriot Act Section Goes Way Too Farhttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=9628531Via: http://www.cincinnati.com/story/opinion/letters/2015/05/29/letter-patriotact-sunset-senate-spying/28185561/"Section 215 of the Patriot Act is scheduled to sunset on Monday. This law was secretly interpreted to allow the mass surveillance of who you talk to on the phone. Such information can be deeply intimate and private: Consider, for instance, what you could infer from a record of numerous calls to a local oncology center and pharmacies. Section 215 is a pointless, expensive intrusion into the private life of every American. On May 22, the Senate voted against extending Section 215. Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky has indicated he will bring it up again for a lastminute vote on Sunday. I write to encourage local readers to ask their senators, especially McConnell and Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio, not to extend these surveillance provisions because they run counter to the spirit and letter of the Constitution.
