Ask HN: Time to Pivot Out of Engineering?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=44575810I’m looking for a new job and I’m not sure if I should even keep applying to SWE roles or not. Looking back on the 6 years I’ve been working as a SWE, I’ve always ended up in a position where I was pretty miserable after a couple years no matter what company I was working for at the time. I’m annoyed at all the process, I’m annoyed with the people, I’m not interested in what the company is doing, and it just feels like such a grind.Earlier on, I thought that this was just a symptom of not liking the product, culture, or just getting bored of what I was working on at the time and could be fixed by going to a different company. But now after working at 3 different companies of slightly different sizes, I’m starting to think that maybe I just don’t enjoy this field as much as I thought I would.I’m definitely not a 10x engineer who is constantly cranking out code, and if I’m being honest with myself I am just a slightly above average engineer. I’m good enough to do the tasks that are needeJul 15, 2025 9:05 PM

You can’t judge a star by its protoplanetary dischttps://www.esa.int/ESA_Multimedia/Images/2025/05/You_can_t_judge_a_star_by_its_protoplanetary_discThis image tells the story of redemption for one lonely star. The young star MP Mus (PDS 66) was thought to be all alone in the Universe, surrounded by nothing but a featureless band of gas and dust called a protoplanetary disc. In most cases, the material inside a protoplanetary disc condenses to form new planets around the star, leaving large gaps where the gas and dust used to be. These features are seen in almost every disc – but not in MP Mus’s.Jul 14, 2025 9:00 AM

Show HN: Sohri – Turn short stories into binge-able audio episodeshttps://sohri.ai/exploreHey HN, I love creating, and I've been fascinated by AI audio tools. But as a creator, trying to actually use them felt like a trap.First, wrestling with raw TTS APIs to create something that doesn't sound like a robot reading a phone book is an art form in itself. It takes forever to get the pacing and tone right.Second, and this was the real deal-breaker: even if you create a masterpiece, platforms like YouTube feel like they're just waiting to demonetize you or slap a restriction on your work because it's "AI-generated." It feels like you're building on someone else's land, and they can change the rules overnight. It's soul-crushing.I wanted a sanctuary for audio creators. A place that’s more like a recording studio in your pocket than a frustrating API wrapper. A platform where you can focus on your story, not on fighting the tools or the distribution algorithm. So, I built Sohri (https://sohri.ai). Sohri is designed to turn your short stories into polished, binge-able audio episodeJul 13, 2025 12:00 PM

Show HN: EndBOX DIY Kit – A Basic Microcomputerhttps://www.endbasic.dev/endbox.htmlHello all!A month ago, I announced of a "little box" I've been working on to run EndBASIC, similar to the machines we played with in the 1980s. The box was briefly discussed in https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=44253065 and I wasn't quite ready to properly launch it.Today, I'm still not ready to actually build and ship this box myself as I was previously thinking (and I'm not sure I'll even try to embark on that journey!), but I have finished preparing DIY instructions to build your own little machine.AND, as part of this, I've released the disk image with the tailored OS for the Raspberry Pi to run a BASIC system right at boot. In case you are curious, the OS is, essentially, a minimal NetBSD system customized with a build of the EndBASIC interpreter that leverages NetBSD APIs directly, bypassing the need for X11 to offer you a console very early in the boot.Links for the downloads in the instructions page!Hope you enjoy it.Jul 12, 2025 3:12 AM

Claude Code/Cursor is using grep? Are we devolvinghttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=44529677Every AI coding tool has a search problem.Claude uses grep. Cursor does basic vector search. Context retrieval? Honestly, pretty mediocre. As a co-founder of a vector database company, I’ve realized: the only way to understand real developer pain is to use these tools every day — not just sit in strategy meetings.Tried Claude Code. Loved the idea: delegating tasks from the terminal feels magical. But hit a wall fast — grep-based search doesn’t understand semantics. It finds strings, not meaning.Cursor? A good start with vector search, but still shallow. No deep understanding of code structure or intent. That pain point became our opportunity. The more I used Claude, Cursor, Windsurf… the clearer it became: AI tools lack true semantic code understanding. So we built Code Indexer CLI:One-click indexing of your codebaseFast, semantic retrievalNative support for all major AI coding toolsWe’re not just fixing search — we’re building a better foundation for AI coding.
