Why are there an increasing number of outright unhinged high karma users on HN?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=48485429I’ve been noticing this disturbing trend for quite a while. By high karma I mean well over 1000 karma.And some of these leave comments so bizarre, that I can’t find any charitable explanation.Other than perhaps they may be skipping reading every other word or something… and then respond to an imaginary version of the parent.Uncharitably, they could be semi-random keyboard bashing, deranged bashing, emotional tantrums, and so on. Why would someone want to learn code when AI does it better and faster?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=48481802I know it sounds like I'm some sort of self-taught "prompt engineer" but actually I spent some time learning to code, and a mistake I made was focusing too much on learning different frameworks and syntax etc etc. But it's impossible to consistently program and only learn syntax and no problem solving. So I learned a bit that too. But it hurt me very bad when I found out, not only AI is better than me in syntax, so it is in problem solving (however I sometimes catch their mistakes, but they're generally better than me). And they are rapidly becoming better. Recently I don't learn as much new stuff about programming and etc. For example, today I used beam search without knowing what it is and how it works, and I know it's something that I'd rarely use again and it and It's obvious that I used AI. There are apps that can do this already, but I didn't want to pay for one and I thought it seemed simple enough to build myself. So, I built Vocast - a cli tool using local TTS to convert articles to audio and expose them as a podcast RSS feed. You can subscribe using your existing podcast app (Apple Podcasts has worked well for me).Currently it uses Kokoro for TTS which I chose because it seems to be a good compromise between quality and speed. Generated audio files are stored in a local library and the cli provides commands to add, list, and delete those files. I use Tailscale to expose the local web server to my mobile device. I've provided instructions on how to do so in the README.So far it's worked well for turning articles into something I can listen to while away from the desk so I'm pretty happy with the result.
