Design with a Soul: How to make your Vibe-coded site not look like AI Slophttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49287430I have some tips on how to make your site / app feel real and human even if it's vibe coded.- I'm not a graphics designer but I've worked with many and deeply interested in it for 15 years. - I led a UX team in a 50K+ organisation - I've launched 6+ businesses and did countless websites. So here's how I do it -- I'm not saying THIS IS THE WAY to do it. This is HOW I DO IT.1) Whiteboard. Sit your ass down, put some music on you find inspirational and imagine what you want your users to feel. What type of an "ambiance" this site should have? Energetic, calming, playful, serious? Pick 1 or 2 as your primary emotional anchors.2) Principles. You need to have these engrained in your bones. Less is more. If you try to do everything you do nothing. Design is an exercise in ruthless elimination. Read on design to build your internal mental heuristics library.3) Mental Image. Once you have a feel and direction decided (can change, but clarity is important) (For example, while I was building my cuAug 13, 2026 3:25 PM

Ask HN: Why Connected Home Appliances?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49278761Asking for a magazine writer for a feature story about "IoT" connected home appliances. The primary question behind this feature is: “I have to now use an app to operate my washing machine. Why?!”The feature explores why this is happening, what technology is behind that, and how this trend (?) might evolve as consumers increasingly complain about app overwhelm.Any pointers to details on how these systems work would be welcome. If you have worked on any of the underlying software, the writer would love to interview you or communicate via email. They have given me some questions they are hoping to answer (see first comment below). Thanks!Aug 12, 2026 9:24 PM

Show HN: Trunchbull, run real models against any benchmark in your browserhttps://trunchbull.devHi HN,Today I'm showcasing Trunchbull, a benchmarking platform designed for authoring benchmarks and running them against different models. We have direct support for benchmarks that use the harbor authoring system, custom tool authoring via the vercel ai sdk and configuration limits. We've also already imported terminalbench 2.0, as a sort of proof of concept that our harbor task orchestrator works, although you currently need a paid account as we are provisioning sandbox environments.I've made several popular benchmarks publicly available for testing. You dont need an account or your credit card information to access these:[Public benchmark demos](https://trunchbull.dev/sandboxes)[GSM8K math reasoning](https://trunchbull.dev/try/gsm8k)[SkateBench](https://trunchbull.dev/try/skatebench)[ARC-Challenge](https://trunchbull.dev/try/arc-challenge)[TruthfulQA](https://trunchbull.dev/try/truthfulqa-mc1)[Medical AI Failure Atlas](https://trunchbull.dev/try/medical-ai-failure-atlas)These demos Aug 12, 2026 3:14 PM

Show HN: Argmin, challenges for optimizing hard problemshttps://argmin.devI want to share a project I've been working on called argmin.dev. It's a platform for hard optimization problems where a solution can be checked deterministically. For a bit of background, I've always found these types of problems interesting. The really difficult optimization problems where techniques like gradient decent don't work, or where even finding a feasible solution is difficult (e.g. square packing). I've worked on these independently for fun and have created this project as a way to share the problems I find interesting with the community. I am curious to see how far others can push these. Each challenge is defined by its verifier, a program that will enforce the constraints, and evaluate the objective function. The verifiers are open-source per challenge, so users can check their solutions against it before submitting. The platform keeps a record of submissions and will update the leaderboard each time someone finds a new record. Because the verifier is the spec, any loopholAug 11, 2026 4:51 PM

Show HN: Bio Tools – install drug design tools easilyhttps://github.com/David-OConnor/bio_toolsI made a CLI program, Rust and Python lib that makes it easy to install and run bio / drug design tools. (structure prediction, sequence prediction, property prediction etc). You install it with `pip install bio_tools_app`, then run commands like `bio_tools install alphafold3` or `bio_tools run proteinmpnn --version` etc. This smooths over the complexities of installing these tools, which often depend on [mutually exclusive] python environments in a mix of PyPi-capable and Conda. I use it as a shared library between a python web app and a rust standalone GUI program. (Molchanica)Aug 10, 2026 3:55 PM

Show HN: Guide AI coding agents on how to use libraries securelyhttps://github.com/Reware-Labs/securitycardsHi HN,TL;DR: AI Code Security Cards give coding agents library- and version-specific guidance to generate safer code.AI coding agents can generate working code, but they often lack library- and version-specific security knowledge. We've developed AI Code Security Cards, an open-source security knowledge layer, to provide that missing context. The project is related to my PhD, in which I focused on the security of LLM-generated code. During my research, I studied how code generation models behave, how they introduce security issues, and how we can guide them toward generating safer code.My research [1] and several other studies [2–4] show that at least 40% of code generated by state-of-the-art models contains one or more security issues. Similar problems also affect AI coding agents. One reason is that these models often lack sufficient library-specific security knowledge in their context. They may not know which configurations are unsafe, which validation steps are required, or what secuAug 4, 2026 2:12 PM
