Ask HN: Is this normal HN ranking?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49239107I came back looking for a TechCrunch story about SV undermining democracy [0], and was surprised to find it had already dropped off the front page.Found it on page 2, but it's ranking was lower (44) than articles that it should seemingly outrank—based on comments (211), points (247) and time posted (12 hours ago). See screenshot [1].For instance, at 38 is an older article with only 3 comments and 29 points. At 41 was a significantly older article with only 38 comments and 125 points. So, this article is ranking lower than even a much older article with roughly half the votes and ~5.5x fewer comments. Is there some other "bonus" or penalty for articles (beyond those that are overtly problematic per HN guidelines)?[0] https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49232221[1] https://imgur.com/a/t4Cn2FiAug 10, 2026 4:07 AM

Show HN: Skyline Co-op is like SimTower, but built around democratic socialismhttps://intergalacticrobots.app/skyline-coop/I've been rebuilding old games with Claude. While creating a modern take on SimTower and having election news on TV in the background, I had the idea to build the economy of the game around democratic socialism instead of capitalism.Instead of a real estate tycoon, you are an elected steward of the building, held responsible by the Assembly. Homes are allocated off a waitlist, dues are set on a sliding scale, and you face outside pressures from neighboring capitalist landlords. The crown jewel is attracting a large grant to establish an observatory at the top of your tower, attracting scientists. To get there, you must make sure the people are fed, housed, healthy, and entertained. If the Assembly doesn't have confidence in your abilities, you get voted out.It kinda works, and the potential failures in the game are pretty unique. I'd be interested to hear HN's take. An entire SimCity clone based on a different economy like this could be fun.Aug 6, 2026 11:37 AM

How to prevent ideological capture of sites like Wikipedia, HNhttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=48290346Someone submitted a link [1] to an article on Wikipedia's whitewashing of Mao titled Wikipedia Whitewashes Mao – The Anatomy of Ideological Capture [2], a topic which in a more generalized form is of interest to the current average HN denizen given the prevalence of Wikipedia in LLM training data. It did not take long for the flaggers and down-voters to take down the article which has only managed to get a few comments, the top one claiming the article to be 'a pretty political take on a Wikipedia article'. I think the subject deserves more discussion since it points out a clear problem with sources like Wikipedia but also because of the way this article was quickly flagged to death. The flagging and down-voting mechanisms make sites like HN vulnerable to the same type of ideological capture as what is discussed in the linked article in that a relatively small group of motivated users can suppress 'unwanted' subjects while boosting those which fit some desired narrative.[1] https://newMay 27, 2026 6:14 AM

Tell HN: The Threat to US Citizen's ID / Voting Is Private Serviceshttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=48238426THE REAL RISK AROUND VOTER ID NOW COMES FROM PRIVATE ENTERPRISEThis post has been condensed due to character limitations on HN posts.[...]What's happening is that private entities are curating the databases and operating automated adjudication services which the government contracts to utilize. "But it's little things, administrative things." Yeah maybe, but look where they are in the kill chain. During approximately the week surrounding 15-May-2026 I was denied the "privilege" of scheduling an appointment at the United States Post Office by one of these "administrative things" and there is no particular reason to think that the government runs this service themselves, relying entirely on compute and data which they control. So THIS is how the woodpecker destroys civilization; or at least our representative democracy. There is no appeal. There is no overt denial at the time of service either. Here's how it works in real life:The United States federal government operates Login.Gov, a sinMay 22, 2026 4:54 PM

Show HN: CrowdRank – live leaderboards for internet argumentshttps://crowdrank.appHi HN. I built CrowdRank, a small web app where people vote through head-to-head matchups and the results become a live leaderboard.Backstory:A few years ago, while I was learning to code, I wanted to build a Tinder-style voting app to rank the funniest characters from The Office. I hit a lot of dead ends, mostly on the frontend, and abandoned it.Now with a bit more technical background i rebuilt the idea as a more general platform. The backend/API is Laravel, and I used AI heavily to help build the frontend because somehow centering a div still finds ways to humble me.What did I end up building?A web based platform for ranking candidates inside different topics. There are no community-created topics yet. For now, I seeded a bunch of debates and used an Elo style ranking system, similar to chess ratings, to build a live leaderboard for each debate. No signup is needed to try it.A few example debates:- who’s actually funny in The Office? Show HN: Perspectives – I wanted AI to challenge my thinking, not validate ithttps://getperspectives.appI built Perspectives because I got tired of ChatGPT agreeing with everything I said.Ask any LLM to "consider multiple perspectives" and you get hedged consensus. The model acknowledges trade-offs exist, then settles on a moderate position that offends nobody. Useful for summaries. Useless for decision making.Perspectives forces disagreement. 8 personas with fundamentally incompatible frameworks debate your question through a structured protocol, then vote using Single Transferable Vote to surface where they actually land. The output is a PDF report synthesising all of it.How it worksBlind Proposals: Each persona generates a position without seeing the others. This prevents the "anchoring problem" where early responses shape later ones, bypassing the default sycophancy of LLMs.Interrogation of Blind Proposals: Proposals face structured challenges from 3 opposing personas. A "high-empathy" persona (e.g., The Idealist) will be challenged by a "low-empathy" cluster (e.g., The Pragmatist). Jan 22, 2026 10:02 AM

Show HN: Beauty Arena – An Elo-based experiment to measure aestheticshttps://beautyarena.vercel.appHi HN,I built Beauty Arena to solve a data problem I've always found annoying: absolute rating scales (1-10) are terrible for subjective data. They suffer from massive inflation and inconsistent user baselines (one person's 7 is another person's 5).I wanted to test if pairwise comparison (1v1) could produce a cleaner, strictly relative dataset.Instead of asking "How beautiful is this person?", the system asks a simple question: "Who do you choose?". It uses a ranking system inspired by competitive games (Elo/Glicko) under the hood. As users vote, a global ranking emerges based on win/loss ratios against others rather than accumulated points.I'm curious about the "wisdom of the crowd" limits here. Does a pairwise sort actually converge on a clear consensus, or does it cycle indefinitely due to intransitive preferences (A > B, B > C, but C > A)?I'd love feedback on the ranking methodology and the overall UI.Dec 30, 2025 12:56 AM
