Show HN: Aris – a free AI-powered answer engine for kidsI am Andrew, and I’m building Aris (https://www.aris.chat/).Aris is a minimalist tool that answers any questions a child has.Encyclopedias, periodicals, field guides, cookbooks, and other print resources we used as kids to find knowledge, learn, and pursue our curiosities have been replaced in most households by something that is not safe for kids: the internet. So instead, kids get Fortnite, Minecraft, and ‘edutainment’ options that don’t compare to the knowledge resources that past generations have had access to.With this in mind, many of the smartest people I know raise (or plan to raise) their kids with access to only a 1990s level of consumer technology, without smartphones, tablets, social media, online gaming, etc. Many of these people believe the last three decades of technological development have been a net negative for kids. When my child was born, I had a similar sentiment. However, there are some major problems with limiting a kid’s access to technology today. To name a co

Show HN: Radiccio – Mac music player – local files, Apple Music, Plex, JellyfinTLDR: Check out my Mac music player app, download the beta, and I’d love any feedback! Comment here or email beta@radiccio.music--Lately I’ve been unsatisfied with available options for music players on the Mac. Everyone focuses on mobile (I know, that’s where the money is) and it feels like there’s not as much good stuff for Mac as there used to be. Well, I’ve been using the Mac for a long time and I still like it, and I wanted a good music player, so I made my own.I started with SwiftUI, since that’s what I’ve used most recently at my iOS jobs, and I like it well enough. I soon found that SwiftUI is quite a bit rougher on macOS, so I ended up rewriting a few components in AppKit, although it remains mostly SwiftUI.I know it’s risky to build on someone else’s service, so my first and main priority was to support local files on a disk, the simplest possible way of playing music. I layered on top of that an optional SQLite db (which I call “Librarian”) for indexing and search. I used AV

Ask HN: Has the Gaza war affected the HN crowd?I'm curious whether others in the HN community have felt ripple effects from the Gaza war—either directly or indirectly. In Israel, the war has triggered a noticeable academic brain drain, with foreign students and collaborators pulling back from Israeli institutions (Haaretz). In tech, the impact has been even more pronounced: thousands of workers have relocated abroad, especially to the U.S., and investment in Israeli startups has dropped sharply. Some VCs now require Israeli companies to incorporate outside Israel to mitigate perceived risks (Calcalist). At the same time, there's growing tension within global tech companies. Internal protests—especially at firms like Google and Microsoft—have raised questions about how Israeli professionals are perceived, and whether political affiliations or national origin are starting to affect hiring, collaboration, or workplace culture. Google recently fired 28 employees after a sit-in protest over its cloud contract with Israel (The Verge), and
