Time-expanded network model cuts complexity in mega constellation launch planninghttps://www.spacedaily.com/reports/Time_expanded_network_model_cuts_complexity_in_mega_constellation_launch_planning_999.htmlTokyo, Japan (SPX) Dec 30, 2025 Large Low Earth Orbit (LEO) constellations promise continuous, high-capacity information services, but planners must work within limits set by launch cadence, payload capacity, and orbital mechanics to deploy satellites in batches at reasonable cost. Researchers Junru Lin, Tiantian Zhang, and Min Hu at Space Engineering University in Beijing have developed an optimization framework that keeps de

Show HN: Beauty Arena – An Elo-based experiment to measure aestheticshttps://beautyarena.vercel.appHi HN,I built Beauty Arena to solve a data problem I've always found annoying: absolute rating scales (1-10) are terrible for subjective data. They suffer from massive inflation and inconsistent user baselines (one person's 7 is another person's 5).I wanted to test if pairwise comparison (1v1) could produce a cleaner, strictly relative dataset.Instead of asking "How beautiful is this person?", the system asks a simple question: "Who do you choose?". It uses a ranking system inspired by competitive games (Elo/Glicko) under the hood. As users vote, a global ranking emerges based on win/loss ratios against others rather than accumulated points.I'm curious about the "wisdom of the crowd" limits here. Does a pairwise sort actually converge on a clear consensus, or does it cycle indefinitely due to intransitive preferences (A > B, B > C, but C > A)?I'd love feedback on the ranking methodology and the overall UI.

Webb maps carbon rich atmosphere on distorted pulsar planethttps://www.spacedaily.com/reports/Webb_maps_carbon_rich_atmosphere_on_distorted_pulsar_planet_999.htmlBerlin, Germany (SPX) Dec 17, 2025 Scientists using NASA's James Webb Space Telescope have identified an exoplanet with an atmosphere unlike any seen before, orbiting a rapidly spinning neutron star known as a pulsar. The object, officially designated PSR J2322-2650b, has a mass comparable to Jupiter but is stretched into a lemon-like shape by the strong gravitational pull of its compact host star. Its atmosphere appears dominate

Show HN: Calclock, Countdown/Lifeclock, Configurablehttps://thysys.com/happy-new-year.htmlI originally built this in Visual BASIC in 1994 for a friend who was in McMurdo Base Antarctica waiting on an 'Air Drop!' that was still months away, that would bring fresh food and much-desired mail to its denizens. It was a looming event everyone was anticipating and the waiting was cruel. No shortages but the 'freshies' run out first and for long spans everyone had to eat from cans, which saps morale. People would barter for spare batteries. I said via email "Sorry I cannot help you... but HERE is something that will make the wait even harder to bear! Hopefully it will become funny after awhile." So I sent him a CALCLOCK counting down to Air Drop. For awhile I used it to countdown to various things and to make life clocks. It stopped working a long ago. It was made using 16-bit Visual BASIC so ancient it even crashes the wine emulator today. This is the 2025 rewrite. Runs everywhere, 76k self contained html using js/svg elements built on the fly.Set from-time to NOW and to-time to the

NASA Study Suggests Saturn’s Moon Titan May Not Have Global Oceanhttps://www.nasa.gov/solar-system/planets/saturn/saturn-moons/titan/nasa-study-suggests-saturns-moon-titan-may-not-have-global-ocean/A key discovery from NASA’s Cassini mission in 2008 was that Saturn’s largest moon Titan may have a vast water ocean below its hydrocarbon-rich surface. But reanalysis of mission data suggests a more complicated picture: Titan’s interior is more likely composed of ice, with layers of slush and small pockets of warm water that form […]

Show HN: Hazbin Hotel OC Maker – Create Original Characters with AIhttps://aiocmaker.com/oc-maker/hazbin-hotel-oc-makerHi HNI built a Hazbin Hotel OC Maker, an AI-powered tool that helps fans create original characters (OCs) inspired by the Hazbin Hotel universe. As a fan myself, I noticed that many creators struggle to turn vague ideas into a complete OC — especially when it comes to personality, backstory, visual traits, and tone consistency with the Hazbin Hotel style. Most tools focus only on images or only on text, so I wanted to combine both into a single workflow. What it doesGenerates original Hazbin Hotel–style characters (not existing canon characters)Helps define:Name & demon typePersonality traitsBackstory & motivationsVisual description suitable for artists or AI image toolsDesigned for writers, roleplayers, and artistsWorks entirely in the browser, no setup requiredWhy I made itI’m building a broader AI OC creation platform, and this is one of the first focused generators aimed at a specific fandom. Hazbin Hotel has a very distinct tone and aesthetic, which made it an interesting challenge

Like a toddler, our Sun occasionally has disruptive outbursts. But instead of throwing a fit, the Sun spews magneti

Ask HN: Better places to work for burntout SWE?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=46211822I've tried my share of startups and megacorps, FAANGs. I am in a stage where I cringe on hearing a mission is so important that it needs a 996 culture. I also hate work getting stolen in the name of collaboration and politics in general thats daily business in Megacorps. I just want to bang out code, mentor juniors and deliver value in a small team that doesn't have an unhealthy obsession with growth or overworking. Maybe with rich founders who don't want to get more rich.Where can I find good places to work, especially in the US that offer: 1. Remote first setting 2. Mission oriented like Privacy, non-profit background etc (or Open Source with proven history) 3. Holocracy/Flat structureI think the above 3 criteria will really narrow down places that prioritize mission over growth/profits and automatically not pay a lot yet have a higher technical bar that deters a lot of folks who would end up optimizing for things that lead to a mess. Am I looking for a Unicorn?

Ask HN: Who Is Working to Combat AI-Powered Fraud?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=46137711There has been a recent explosion in AI-aided scams and fraud. Deepfakes (both video and voice), web scraping, and automated document generation have allowed scammers to target victims with more precision and believability than was ever possible before AI.All of this has always been possible to some degree, but "quantity has a quality all its own" continues to ring true.Public education ("scam awareness") is obviously the most decisive strategy, but is generally left to the underfunded public sector or the PR departments of banks, etc.As for AI-industry regulation, I'm not holding my breath. And besides, with open-source models there will always be products available to bad actors. So is anyone working on anything in the public interest? Any bright ideas?
