Launch HN: Aquarium (YC S20) – Improve Your ML Dataset Qualityhttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=23821502Hi everyone! I’m Peter from Aquarium (https://www.aquariumlearning.com/). We help deep learning developers find problems in their datasets and models, then help fix them by smartly curating their datasets. We want to build the same high-power tooling for data curation that sophisticated ML companies like Cruise, Waymo, and Tesla have and bring it to the masses.ML models are defined by a combination of code and the data that the code trains on. A programmer must think hard about what behavior they want from their model, assemble a dataset of labeled examples of what they want their model to do, and then train their model on that dataset. As they encounter errors in production, they must collect and label data for the model to train on to fix these errors, and verify they're fixed by monitoring the model’s performance on a test set with previous failure cases. See Andrej Karpathy’s Software 2.0 article (https://medium.com/@karpathy/software-2-0-a64152b37c35) for a great description of th

Ask HN: Looking for help/advice/mentoring resources online, free or paidhttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=22698906My life is a mess. I am lost in regard to what I want to do, what are my abilities, and at the same time, I think I am not good enough to compete with other people in our globalized ultra-competitive job market. On top of that, I feel like my life is going nowhere. To add insult to injury, I feel very lonely even though I have 4-5 friends with whom I talk once in a while.I am already seeing a psychologist and a psychiatrist, having said so, they have not been able to address and help me out in questions like "I feel like even though I like a variety of fields, I at the same time have failed in every attempt I've had in studying "insert x field" since I was 16 years old".BTW, I am a 20 year old male from Spain who dropped out of uni during my freshman year in CS after failing every single subject I had, and 3 months ago I dropped out of vocational school where I was studying Robotics & Automation. I was only to graduate from High School even though I failed 2 core subjects (biology and c

Ask HN: Bonding Internet Connectionshttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=20580811Hi Guys - I'm based in Australia and have slow ADSL2+ (4Mb/1Mb down/up). I live semi rural so have limited to no mobile reception. I can get 'skymuster' which is a satellite connection that should provide about 20Mb down. That said I've has mixed reviews like it 1) stops working in heavy rain plus 2) accounts are limited to 200bg and I probably use double that in a month and 3) I run my mobile calls over wifi so worried about the latency of satellite only.I’ve started looking at signing up to both services to get the best of both and bonding these 2 connections. The solution to bond connections that keeps showing up is Speedify. There doesn’t seem to be a huge amount of options for a non-technical person like me. I'm wondering if people have any recommendations on the best way to bond 2 internet connections?

Ask HN: Which personal dashboard solution do you use?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=18623552I'm looking to organize all of my life's information into a single dashboard - things like financial, health, goals and progress information. For example, I want to be able to pull up the dashboard and see things like: My IRA info, bank balance, Apple Health data, analytics data for certain web properties I care about, stock information, perhaps a few posts from HN or certain Reddit subs I follow. Basically, all the things I might check on any given day, in one place so I just glance at it and be done. I imagine it would need the ability to add custom types of charts, perhaps connect via API to various services etc... Does anything like this exists?

Ask HN: What makes a GREAT hackathon?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=18239793I'm helping organize the next hackathon where I work. We have something like 30-50 people participating across technical frontend and backend teams, including UIUX folks, PMs and others.Typically our hackathons are 3 days long and are self-organized in to teams who go for various bounties. Anyone can suggest a bounty which might come with a trophy and maybe a gift card. Typically - but not exclusively - the hacks have been work related. We usually have a food challenge too during the event. Last time it was "who could eat the most pirogies" (the winner ate 100 over 3 days :-) ). We have a show & tell event at the end and open voting on the winners. We're open to changing things up!What have you seen (timing, tasks, organizationally or anything else) that works well or poorly in a hackathon? Thanks HN!

Ask HN: Why is hackernews so old-fashioned?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=17412237As a web developer, it's always seemed strange to me that a tech incubator would have such an old-fashioned website. It's nice in some respects - pages load extremely quickly and the layout is compact and to-the-point. I was starting to think it was just minimalist by choice and not actually outdated, but then someone mentioned that async requests are done through an tag instead of ajax, so now I'm wondering what the story is there?Has it just been left alone because it's not broken? Or because they're worried people would get upset about changes? Or for maximum backward-compatibility? I'm not complaining; I'm just really curious.

Ask HN: How do I get into bioinformatics as a CS student?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=16275367Dear HN,I am a 20-year-old university student majoring in computer science and minoring in mathematics with the intent of finding a way to build a career around data science and computational intelligence. Recently, I've started gravitating towards bioinformatics because it seems like the sort of work that appeals to me. I like working on hard problems whose ideal approach isn't well established and the idea of working with data related to the fabric of life itself seems like it motivate me to get out of bed every morning and look forward to what I do every day. However, I have at best an American-high-school-level of understanding biology. I remember the basics: cell anatomy, the DNA transcription process, basic biochemical pathways, and basic human anatomy. How do I build upon my current knowledge of biology so that I can be a strong contender for a role as a data scientist at a biotech company or at a research lab in the next 5 or so years?Specifically, I would like to find a job whe

Is stack-overflow a block-chain concept?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=16003947I think that stack-overfow is conceptually a bitcoin for prestige. It should be easy to use a real block-chain to reflect the use of SO using prestige points as units of transactions. I believe that many of you are thinking of using block-chain as a way to achieve better interactions with your would be clients. And surely time is ripe for creating a chain-block abstraction whose main objective is to convert or introduce publically known value into money or other block-chain value so that recursively it finally achieves liquity and moneritation. In SO you can see the complete history of how someone gained prestige. SO a ledged book for prestige points , that book is a web page trusted internationally as of real value for programmers and open to knew transations openly with little censorship.
